The influence of higher education on police officer habits would surprise many according to Matthew D. Bostrom, D.P.A of the Saint Paul Police Department in “Police Chief Magazine-The Professional Voice of Law Enforcement”. Although a degree is required for some agencies and considered ideal for any person looking to join the law enforcement field, surveys show otherwise says Bostrom. According to a study conducted in St. Paul, Minnesota there were more on-duty vehicle collisions by officers with formal education beyond high school than those who only obtained a high school diploma. The article also shows figures indicating more disciplinary actions towards officers with college degrees and a significant difference in those of officers with high school diplomas only. The measurements of work habits shown indicate that perhaps a college degree in general is not necessary to be an effective police officer. Traffic Officer James Dunn of the California Highway Patrol in an interview said, “a degree can be beneficial, but some people are very eloquent and knowledgeable even without attending college-a person can learn the specific duties of any job, but college does not teach you the responsibilities of being a police officer. You learn that by hands-on training”. Although a degree is helpful, Officer Dunn admits that he has been very successful in the law

In the process of getting my recommendation letters written, I stopped by my junior Physics teacher’s class. By this time, the full pressure of college application season had set in, and I began to doubt myself and my abilities. I showed my old teacher the list of everywhere I was applying to. He asked me what I wanted to major in and I said business. Not doubting me and knowing my potential by how I performed in the class, he recommended that I apply to UPenn. In fact, he himself was a Penn graduate, and said that in 30 years he had not recommended anyone else go. This encounter boosted my confidence in myself, and this is why I am applying and writing this essay today. He saw in me what I began to forget about myself. My whole life, people have been telling me how much potential I have: teachers and family members alike.
Some call me argumentative- I prefer the term dialectical. It is true, I enjoy debates more than the average person. Nothing compares to the thrill of triumphantly dispelling an opponent’s case and swaying an audience to my side. On top of that, I have a sincere appreciation and talent for writing, reading comprehension, and grammar. With these attributes, I feel destined for a career in law. Yet, it is more than just my personal tastes that have led to my interest in legal services. Growing up with a disorder, I have developed empathy for people with disabilities and a desire to help them by advocating for their rights. As a lawyer, I hope to take action to make the world a better place to live in for people with conditions similar- and maybe not so similar- to mine.

What should we do in life? That always seems to be the question. Life is not guaranteed to be easy, never turning out the exact way that we want it to. A lot of people work hard to achieve their dreams of making a massive amount of money and having more than a seven percent return on their 401k plan. Truth is, life is not about the amount of money that we have saved up, it is about what we do to make a difference and how we will make our lifetime worth it. Something that people should set into place is a plan for their future. A plan that would help not only directs their path in life, but the paths of those around them too.

2. The institution I’d like to pick is my work environment (Community day hab center in Westbrook). My job has me bring my mentally disabled clients all around the southern maine community, so I see a lot of cops and people from different towns and cities. Based on my experience with observing and learning about crime, the most apparent and influential type of social control I witness is escalation. I’ve seen certain people get very insulted when a cop comes to the door and starts asking questions. People don’t even seem to be aware that they got a call from possibly a distressed neighbor and it’s the officer’s job to come check out the situation. Instead of calmly explaining why the house smells like weed or why the wife is crying, sometimes
The day of the scheduled ride along which was on a Saturday, he called me at about 6:00pm and asked for the address where he would be picking me up. He showed up at my step-mothers apartment and before I knew it, I was on my way to the police station to sign paperwork. My first impression of him was that he had a funny looking mustache. He was very nice and polite. He asked me about school, such as what classes I was taking, and what I wanted to do in the criminal justice field. It wasn’t awkward or anything which was a huge relief. We kept the conversation flowing pretty well. When we got to the police station he gave me two sheets to sign, it was a liability waiver. After that was out of the way, we sat down in the briefing room and he signed
