During this semester in University Studies, I have been able to gain several different aspects and information which I will be able to use not only in my current career in Law Enforcement but also in any future endeavors. These future goals are not only in my career and academic life but also in my personal life.
I was taught many years ago when I was going through the police academy that a person does not know everything on a specific subject. No matter if you’re an expert in this subject, your goal should be to try to take away at least one thing that you did not know and learned. If a person can do this throughout their education and their career, he/she will be successful.
In this class, I began not understanding why someone my age would
need this class. I definitely understood a student straight out of high school needing to go through this class, however, what was I going to really get out of this class? While taking this class, I remembered what was taught to me and decided, I needed to find at least one thing that will help me. Come to find out, I found several. The very first subject we had was to learn about the history of Fayetteville State University. This assignment at first seemed very foolish to me until I started learning about the universities history. Learning how free blacks were secretly teaching and educating the slaves during the Civil War was very enlightening to me. I also found it very interesting when I learned how the Phillips School and the Sumner School were combined together after the Civil War to form the Howard School, which would later change names several times until it’s name now, Fayetteville State University. The motivational board, emotional intelligence tests, and the personality tests which were taken during this course also peaked my interest. At this stage in my life I really already knew what type of person I was. But being able to take a test and confirming those ideas was very enlightening also. I really believe that this subject will help younger students know what type of career might be more suitable for them and to understand not to just settle on a career just because, but to find a career that he/she will be happy in. I am very fortunate in this area due to the fact that I do love the career I am in. However, I will use this information in future decisions if I ever decide to change my occupation. When I first starting coming into University Studies class I was trying to understand why I actually needed this class. But being able to take the mentality I explained before and deciding to learn at least one thing showed me this class had not only one thing but several things for me to learn from. This class has been a great tool to me and will be a great tool to many other students in the future.

The influence of higher education on police officer habits would surprise many according to Matthew D. Bostrom, D.P.A of the Saint Paul Police Department in “Police Chief Magazine-The Professional Voice of Law Enforcement”. Although a degree is required for some agencies and considered ideal for any person looking to join the law enforcement field, surveys show otherwise says Bostrom. According to a study conducted in St. Paul, Minnesota there were more on-duty vehicle collisions by officers with formal education beyond high school than those who only obtained a high school diploma. The article also shows figures indicating more disciplinary actions towards officers with college degrees and a significant difference in those of officers with high school diplomas only. The measurements of work habits shown indicate that perhaps a college degree in general is not necessary to be an effective police officer. Traffic Officer James Dunn of the California Highway Patrol in an interview said, “a degree can be beneficial, but some people are very eloquent and knowledgeable even without attending college-a person can learn the specific duties of any job, but college does not teach you the responsibilities of being a police officer. You learn that by hands-on training”. Although a degree is helpful, Officer Dunn admits that he has been very successful in the law
The impact of my career goals has not changed about law enforcement, just my thoughts. So, to be efficient and effective this education really needs to be added back into being a requirement in all states. At least, minimum of an Associates in Criminal Justice. Thereafter, education should continue to be ongoing, to keep better policing as a constant pursuit. Reaching this goal will span the career of the officer. Reasons for this is that the magnitude of crime issues has changed and will probably change again.
Policy can be defined in several different ways and in different contexts. However, the policy assessed in this essay refers to factors, which affect the court’s decision making. Policy considerations are social and economic factors, which assesses the impact of a court ruling on the whole of society. Policy considerations form part of the Caparo three-stage test. Therefore, policy is used in establishing a duty of care. This essay will assess policy considerations in regard to the police force along with the impact of it. It will mainly focus upon police negligence and the decisions taken in this aspect. It will be assessing three policy considerations. Firstly, the protection of professionals,
Prior to the creation of the formal police academy, officers were taught using various methods that were not always effective or conducive to the work required of an officer. As a result, ill-equipped officers flooded the streets of nineteenth-century America, often unable to perform the primary duty of their job: protecting the public. The United States, inspired by England and other countries with better-developed public safety systems, desperately needed a method of ensuring safety for its people. The creation and evolution of the police academy defined what being a police officer entailed by teaching officers what is expected of them, not only job-requirement wise, but also morally and ethically. The Police Academy prepares an individual for the civil, educational, managerial, and everyday duties of police work while ensuring moral sturdiness and commitment to public service. By combining classroom lectures, CSI training, building search training, firearm training, and combative/defensive training, each officer that graduates the police academy is well prepared to handle every aspect of the work of a police officer.
It is impossible to maintain social order without the existence of law enforcement. The expectation of uniformity is unrealistic among everyone in any given society. The mixing of various nationalities, culture, religion, and especially socioeconomic backgrounds generate conflict. Conflict can only be remedied by a neutral entity. The current trends in the impact law enforcement has on minimizing crime globally and domestically proves law enforcement is necessary. Social order is integral in order to generate an environment free from terror and unpredictable chaos. We have learned from historical events that citizens, of any given society, to police themselves, results in constant violence among parties with incompatibilities in their relations with one another. Roufa, T. (2012)
The criminal justice system is a group of institutions that work together to protect a society, prevent and control crime, and maintain justice; enforcing the laws regulated by society. As the years have gone by and society has evolved; so have the criminal justice system and its methods to accomplish its role in society. This short analysis will evaluate the main facts that have been affecting the criminal justice system for decades and have influenced the evolution the justice system is enduring in a changing society (Muraski, 2009). Amongst the changes in the system, we will discuss the effect the changes have had on the citizens and how their perceptions have evolved as well.
Law enforcement in the United States is being perceived as a dangerous, toxic force that cannot be trusted by society. People used to trust law enforcement and come to them in a time of need for protection or help. Media has pointed out only a few corrupt people in authority abusing their power, creating fear in the public’s eye. Although these concerns are spreading throughout the nation, New Mexico is also worried as well. In order to possibly solve this issue, New Mexicans need to show more respect for law enforcement officers because most of them are not practicing racism, abusing power, or using unnecessary violent force. Society has created this image of police officers as these monsters that are in fact practicing racism, abusing their
The Law Enforcement Profession Abstract In order to understand comptemporary law enforcemment, we should recognize the conditions that impact our profession. It is agreed upon by many scholars that major changes in law enforcement occur every five years. Policing is sometimes characterize"... like a sandbar in a river, subject to being changed continuously by the currents in which it is immersed..."
Law enforcement is a career that is both violent and rewarding in many capacities. Justice needs to be served in law enforcement and they have a responsibility to uphold the law and serve the people in the community. Law enforcement is crucial in the world today as a global realm as life continues to be more complex and law enforcement struggles to combat many aspects of crime. In order to combat these problems and have a positive future in the criminal justice system, everyone must work together on a bigger scale.

It would be fulfilling to be a police officer because police officers help people in the community and keep it safe. They also enforce the law. They are the reason why people can live their lives in peace. If there is anyone in the community that citizens can trust it would be the police officers.
Serve and protect as a police officer in the city of Santa Ana has been my career dream goal since I was growing up being influenced by police officers throughout my education. Seeing so many casualties by violence in my community is one of the reasons why I am pursuing this profession, so that I can be able to accommodate the best way I can to reduce the violence. Other reasons why I am desiring to become police officer is to save someone 's life, help people make better choices, challenging tasks, and serve my community. Although dilemmas with people being unsupportive with law enforcement has increased, I will continue to pursue this career and make a tremendous impact in the community. This career will provide me with excellent benefits
The future of policing is fairly clear in what direction it is heading. It has been slowly reforming to meet the needs of the people, reduce crime, and make policing more efficient. Some of the reforms that will probably take place in the future include, better educated police officers and police managers, consolidation of police departments to save on money and resources, upgraded technology, race and gender equality, better testing techniques to recruit and promote within the department, and improved proactive planning techniques. One of these proactive tools that will surely become more widely used and implemented better is community policing. It has been evolving since its first introduction into the police world and will see more reforms in the future. Compstat should also become more widely used by almost all police departments to make those in charge more accountable and for improved crime mapping.
I have found by placing my ego aside and being honest with myself, I have become wiser in my choices as an officers and a person. This type of personal growth has reflected in my abilities become a leader, a well-rounded officer, a productive member of the K-9 unit, and a person who very much cares for the community he serves. I have learned over time it is necessary to take a personal interest in the community, and to work as a team to solve criminal issues.
