Why We Crave Social Media
I think that we are all lonely to some extent. We all seek human interaction but with the vast development of internet and social media, face to face interaction has been declining. This has escalated to the point where people actually spend more time using the internet at home than they spend outside interacting with other human beings.
I have even met people who prioritize their social media communications over real life ones. I’ve even witnessed people pulling out their phone and checking their Facebook messages while they are having a face to face conversation with someone.
When we go on Twitter and interact with people, we are fulfilling our appetite for communication without putting in the effort and going outside

Anybody can make a free YouTube account and interact with its one billion unique monthly users or watch any of its 85+ million videos. After all, this is a much more convenient offer than paying a monthly fee for cable television. Planning and organizing events has also become much easier than it was in the past. Because we are connected with so many people, we don’t realize that something is missing in our lives and that is solitude. In my experience, even if we get few minutes to be alone, we spend that looking at our phones and laptops. For example, in school if we are waiting outside of class for teacher to come, everyone is looking at their phones, never talking to each other or sharing knowledgeable things with each other. Not only that even if we have breaks in between the class, students just take out their phone and start staring at it till the break ends. While hanging out with friends, we spend most of time on our phones. I remember, once I lost my phone and I was feeling completely discombobulated. The more time you spent on your phones and tv the harder it will be for you to interact and talk to people. Research has shown that people who have lots of friends tend to be happier, healthier and they live longer than the ones who don’t have many or any friends in real life(Benny,1).

However, using it as a tool for learning is a different story. By using it as a tool, it can push you off your course with classes. Social media is something that is not needed at school grounds. Schools should not require social media use in classes.

We are living in the 21st century, the technology is more advanced. If you stepping outside in the society, you will see that everyone is caring a smartphone around with them every day, so that they can check their social medias at anytime and anywhere. Life in the modern world is difficult now because of technology has taken up most of our time. It can make us feel lonely and disconnect with reality. As we spend much time on the internet, such as web surfing or instant messaging, we lack with our social skills because we don’t know how to interact with people. People who are “socially anxious” and “lonely” tends to focus more on the internet by making “relationships with others” and slowly interact with people on the web but we don’t socialize with people in our life (Tyler 200-201).
I find social media a perfect way to stay in the loop of what is going on with my friends. Although Eva likes to post pictures of her favorite celebrities, I enjoy using twitter to stay up to date on my favorite sports teams and players.
