It is no secret that social media has become a part of our everyday lives. This is a society where you are judged by how many Instragram likes your photos can get or how many followers you have on Twitter. Not only have social media become a part of our lives, it has changed the way. Whether it be lack of conversation at the dinner table or voicing our opinion on Twitter, there is no denying that social media is here to stay. While my fellow Rider students and I may be spending too much checking social media sites, it most certainly keeps us in touch with the Rider community.
Social media, whether some form of blogging or simply sharing photos with friends and followers via the Internet, have been around ever since the Internet became readily available for everyone to use. The social media movement continues to grow at an extremely fast rate. Sites such as Twitter, Facebook, and Instragram are among most popular. I find social media a perfect way to stay in the loop of what is going on with my friends. Although Eva likes to post pictures of her favorite celebrities, I enjoy using twitter to stay up to date on my favorite sports teams and players. We all can agree that although we do not post selfies or constantly update social media on what we are doing at that very moment, we enjoy benefits social media gives us.
For all we know, social media has changed our lives forever. It gives us some opportunities that we did not have before. My social media use is very similar to that of Eva and Sara. We all use social media more as an observer to keep in the loop of friends and family. We are able to stay up updated to the second on everything that is happening in the world simply because of social media. Now we can only imagine what the future hold and how we will communicate
Currently, social media plays a significant role in our everyday lives and the way people in society interacts with one another. A few years ago, before its influence reached the point where it is now, the large platforms such as Facebook or Twitter which function was merely to keep family and friends connected no matter where they were or what they were doing, and the requirements were an internet connection and a smart phone or a computer. People would share pictures or posts to keep others “updated” on their lives and what they were thinking. Now social media platforms are far more complicated. In various of them, such as Instagram or Snapchat, it is not enough to only share a picture or video of your day, but it is almost a requirement and people are pushed to take an extra mile further away and make yourself appear interesting in the eyes of others. Social media supplies many advantages throughout our daily lives. For instance, on page 12, author Kristian Lewis says,” You can send your best friend a good-luck snap before his basketball game, watch your baby cousin grow up on Instagram, and share YouTube videos of your new kitten.” Another example, is that you can see what is happening in the real world.
Technology today is more relied upon than ever before. If one needs to call someone half way around the world, simply take out a cell phone and dial their number. Within thirty seconds, one can be speaking to that person just as if two people were conversing face-to-face. In the same manner, one has access to endless knowledge and resources by the push of a few buttons or the click of a mouse.
