Spilling like a coin purse, Emanuel is not afraid of speaking what comes to mind. Born in Chino and raised in Montclair, he is now attending Montclair High school to pursue his dreams in getting into a college. He loves the education and continues to do well to this day. Emanuel is an interesting, diverse student, and although some may say otherwise, he proves that he can make himself stand out amongst the crowd. Before Emanuel moved to Montclair, he was born in Chino. This was because his mother and father both worked in the city after moving from a small state in Mexico called Michoacan. Although Emanuel had a restless childhood; his parents moving from a foreign country, then to a city that was not his birthplace, he manages to keep his
Cedric is an unusual student to walk the halls of Ballou High. Unlike most of his peers, he actually wants to make something of himself; he does his homework, he studies and he works on extra credit projects. The majority of the kids at Ballou barely come to class, much less make any attempt at learning. Since this is the overall attitude of the school, Cedric must exercise social mobility and do whatever he can to better himself as an individual. He is not necessarily competing against the students at Ballou (because he by far surpasses them), but he is in competition with all the other students from better schools throughout the area. During the summer that Cedric spends at MIT, he is truly awakened to the fact that he was extremely far behind the other students from urban areas. The director of the program expresses his frustration with the MIT program- "When he first arrived... He had grand plans to find poor black and Hispanic kids from urban America-... He saw that he had been drea...

The first student we meet is Nate Marshal from Whitney Young Magnet High School on the west side of Chicago. The school uses standardized test scores and grades to determine who gets in. The kids that go there are smart, and eager to learn, which is a stark contrast to most of the other schools we see. A good school however does not prevent Nate from seeing the bad side to Chicago. He takes the camera crew to an area around his neighborhood where he points to places he’s gotten jumped, or seen a dead body.
