Communism is everywhere. And many people were involved in communism around the world especially during the 1950’s. One main person involved in american communism was Joseph McCarthy. McCarthy, although negatively, was very much involved in the search for communists in the United States of America. Joseph McCarthy was born on a country farm in a little town called Appleton in the state of Wisconsin. He was born on the fourteenth of November in 1908. He grew up with parents who were very devout Catholics. McCarthy was also the fifth child out of nine children. He grew up like any other child, but he dropped out of school at the age of fourteen to work. At first, he worked on his farm taking care of the chickens. After keeping the chickens, McCarthy managed a local grocery store in the city of Manawa, Wisconsin. Finally, McCarthy decided to return to high school. He went back in 1928 which would have made him twenty years old and still enrolled. After finishing high school, McCarthy attended college at a place called Marquette University. He then attended law school and became a lawyer after graduating (“Joseph McCarthy” 1). In the beginning of McCarthy’s political career, he was already walking on thin ice. He launched a series of charges against the government. The first charge was against the communist global apparatus. McCarthy said that the organization had made a sustained attempt to penetrate the United States government and attempt to subvert its foreign policy decisions. The second charge was against the United States government itself. McCarthy said that the official defenses against foreign penetration ranged from weak to nonexistent. The third and final charge was against the government of America, ... ... middle of paper ... ...embly found this out, he was kicked off and was no longer politically involved in anything. Throughout McCarthy’s political journey, panic that arose from the witch hunt and fear of communism became very well known. That feeling became known as McCarthyism (Senator Joseph McCarthy 2). Communism wouldn’t be what it is today if it weren’t for Joseph McCarthy. Works Cited “The Cold War Museum.” Cold War Museum. N.p., n.d. Web. 23 Jan. 2014. . “Joseph McCarthy.” Spartacus Educational. With the onset of the Cold War, a growing Red Scare would cripple American society – effectively plunging the nation into mass hysteria and unrest over the fallacious threat of communist infiltration. This reaction was precipitated by Republican senator, Joseph McCarthy, in his speech, “Enemies from Within”, delivered in Wheeling, West Virginia, on 9 February 1950. McCarthy paints communists in a particularly harsh light to generate anti-Soviet sentiment within the American public. He uses juxtaposition to engender both indignation and fear in the audience to achieve this effect.
...y Wheeling speech created nationwide hysteria, and with its impeccable timing just days after the conviction of the State Official Alga Hiss for lying under oath about his association with the communist Soviet as a spy, fueled the fight on communism. (citation) McCarthy war on communism during the “Second Red Scare” did not leave any individual safe from accusations. He attacked government agents, entertainment industry workers, educators, union members, and alienated the left-wing Democrats. McCarthy helped to create the atmosphere of suspicion and panic with his growth in media coverage. McCarthy’s words made for big headlines and the media was quick to cover his stories. This exposure helped facilitate American approval of McCarthy and empowered him to make more accusations on those suspected of subversion. In 1953, McCarthy headed the Government Operations Commit
Therefore, establishing anti-Bolshevism in the United States was Robert F. Kelley’s mission. Kelley an Irish Catholic trained by Russian refugees ran the Eastern European Affairs division in the State Department (Leffler, The Specter of Communism, 19). Kelley’s intense dislike for the Bolsheviks demands that his aides join actively in his views. One of his service officers is George F. Kennan who joins in the close observation of Bolshevik destabilizing and expansionist activities that cause unrest in Mexico, Nicaragua, Cuba, Spain and Greece (Leffler, The Specter of Communism, 19). Was Kennan’s containment strategy thinking set off with Kelley’s training? Was Kennan’s awareness of the ongoing Russian Communist activities the basis for his ideas? History proves that George Kennan’s ideas on containment were the basis of NSC-68 and...
I have in my hand 57 cases of individuals who would appear to be either card carrying members or certainly loyal to the Communist Party, but who nevertheless are still helping to shape our foreign policy” (para 9). In this metaphor he compares the State Department to place that has been infested with rats, the rats being Communists spies. Moreover, he made accusations and claims about having in his hand the names of 57 individuals who are card carrying Communist, yet are working in the government and shaping foreign policy. This plants fear in the audience by making them feel as though they are unsafe since the government is falling to Communism, therefore immediate action must be taken to eliminate Communist traitors and restore the security of the country. Furthermore, McCarthy uses an analogy when stating, “This cloak of numbness and apathy has only needed a spark to rekindle them. Happily, this spark has finally been supplied” (para 12). McCarthy claims that after seeing war and mass murder, people become numb and, like a fire, they need a spark to

McCarthyism destroyed many peoples lives and it was one of the saddest events of American history. Joseph McCarthy was a politician that made everyone become afraid of “communist”. He also accused many citizens that weren’t actual communist. McCarthy was unethical with his accusations and only wanted to be in the spotlight. He was the key figure in the anticommunist madness.

Beginning in the late 1940s, as the Cold War escalated between the United States, the Soviet Union and the Peoples Republic of China, the United States went through a period of intense anti-communist tensions and suspicion. Many thousands of individuals were suspected of being Soviet spies, Communists, or communist sympathizers. Although the American Communist Party was never illegal under Federal law, membership in the party or support of its goals were regarded by many as tantamount to treason. Beginning in 1950, McCarthy became the most visible public face of this era of anti-communism. The term McCarthyism was coined that same year to describe and condemn the senator's methods, which were widely seen as demagogic and based on reckless, unsubstantiated accusations. Later the term was applied more generally to the anti-communism of the late 1940s through the late 1950s; today, it is often used even more broadly, to describe public attacks made on persons' character and/or patriotism that involve the sort of tactics associated with McCarthy.
The attitude of the citizens of the United States was a tremendous influence on the development of McCarthyism. The people living in the post World War II United States felt fear and anger because communism was related with Germany, Italy, and Russia who had all at one point been enemies of the United States during the war. If the enemies were communists then, communists were enemies and any communists or even communist sympathizers were a threat to the American way of life. "From the Bolshevik Revolution on, radicals were seen as foreign agents or as those ...

Clearly, McCarthy's ambition for political power contributed to the United States society to a cold war that caused a stir in the nation.’’USA UU Encased in a tense Cold War with the Soviet Union, news of McCarthy's indictment of President Harry Truman's State Department caused nationwide turmoil’’(1).In the same way that fear also arose because persecutions were given to individuals and organizations accused of anti-communism.’’persecution of individuals and organizations accused of anti-communism’’.It was unclear why McCarthy was elected senator as he was supported by documents that were false.Clearly,
Senator Joseph McCarthy made an assertive speech in West Virginia referred to as “Enemies from Within.” Running for re-election and hoping to catch the people’s attention, he claimed that at least 200 employees in the U.S. government were members of the Communist Party. The claim made headlines and caused friction with the Soviet Union because there seemed to be no evidence for McCarthy’s accusations. This practice of making unfair allegations to thwart dissent or political criticism became known as McCarthyism and effectively fueled the fear of communist infiltration in the country. #1 President Harry S. Truman saw right through McCarthy. In a response telegram to his claim at the speech, he said, “This is the first time … that I ever heard of a senator trying to discredit his own Government before the world. You know that isn’t done by honest public officials. Your telegram is not only not true … but it shows you are not even fit to have a hand in the operation of the government of the United States.” (Truman
Throughout the 1940s and 1950s, Senator McCarthy lead a violent campaign attacking alleged communists in the US government and other institutions. Communism defined by dictionary.com is: A system of social organization in which all economic and social activity is controlled by a totalitarian state dominated by a single and self-perpetuating political party (“communism.”). Americans were distressed about the threat of communism growing in Eastern Europe and China. Pressing on those concerns, Senator McCarthy directed more than two hundred false allegations towards communists that had the right of entry to the United States Government. McCarthy was then reprimanded by the Senate for inappropriate conduct. McCarthy’s accusations enhanced the strained relations between the House Un-American Activities Committee (HUAC) and accused communists.
During the Cold War, anti-communism became the dominant political issue in the United States, as society feared common control. In his 1950 speech, Senator Joseph McCarthy—an advocate of anti-communism—introduced an extreme view into the debate over the Communist threat. With the help of media and his power as chair of a Senate subcommittee, McCarthy proclaimed that different parts of the United States government, such as the army and parts of Congress, were pervaded with Communist traitors. Using literary devices such as pathos, tone, and hyperbole, Senator McCarthy manipulated the minds of the American people into believing that disloyalty existed within the federal government.
To understand McCarthyism, one must know what Communism is. Communism is defined as, “an ideology that seeks to establish a classless, stateless social organization based on common ownership of the means of production. It is usually considered a branch of the broader socialist movement that draws on the various political and intellectual movements that trace their origins back to the work of Karl Marx” (Wikipedia Communism). Communism may look good on paper, yet when it started to be practiced in other countries in the 50’s and such, it proved to be not fair. In the Invasion of the Body Snatchers, a man named Dr. McCarthy has had multiple calls about a weird epidemic going around in which people were not acting like themselves. After a few days, McCarthy realizes that something is taking over the town. It appears to be strange “pods” over ruling people’s bodies. Eventually, all of the people are turned into “pod people”, in which they act, talk, and do everything the same. The plot alone shares a big relation with Communism. Communism is aimed at making everyone equal, in a classless society, just like the “pod people”. In a scene with Dr. McCarthy and Becky in McCarthy’s office, McCarthy says that humanity has been drained away. This is a great deal like communism, people have no
