Most teenagers if asked will say that they hate school. Some of them hate school so much-- that they are willing to do without it for good. This poses the question: “When should a student have the right to drop out of school?” Is there such a thing, as being too young to drop out of school? I think so. Although I believe that someone who is sixteen is old enough to drive and have a job (which are two big responsibilities) is somewhat responsible, they still are not old enough to make a decision that will impact the rest of their life (for better or for worse). Students should not be able to drop out of school at any age; no matter how responsible they may be. If most eighteen year olds do not know where they want to go to college or what their major is going to be, then what about the students who are considerably younger; not just by three years, but five or more. If eighteen year olds have trouble making good decisions, than what makes people think that younger students are smart enough, and responsible enough to make a decision such as: dropping out of high school all on their own. Back when I was in high school, I would see some of my fellow classmates, particularly the younger ones, talk about making decisions for the smallest things. In particular, it would be about changing a class, because they did not like the teacher or because they wanted to be with their friends in another class. Well, if it took them mere seconds to make a decision that quick--- on something as simple as a class change, and then afterwards they regretted it; I can only imagine how much they would regret dropping out of school. With the economy now a days, if people without an education are going back to school in order to find work, then those who are sixteen or younger-- are never going to survive without an education. Younger students are known to make hasty decisions, therefore it is in their best interest that they wait until they are older to make life changing decisions, and let the government choose for them--- the age that’s appropriate for dropping out. The appropriate age to start dropping out of school would be eighteen years old or older. Eighteen year olds, I believe are at some level capable of making such a decision as whether they want to continue with school or not.
Dropping out is a personal decision, but many students feel like it's the best option if they have personal or academic issues. Research says, ¨More than 27 percent say that they leave school because they are failing too many classes. About 26 percent of students say that they dropped out to become caregivers to family members in need, and more than 20 percent say that school simply wasn't relevant to their lives,¨ (Learning Liftoff 2). You can legally drop out of high school at age 17 in SC, and you can’t join the military until you are age 17. High school dropouts should not be required to join the military because they may have to drop out for family or personal reasons, or just because they are failing too many classes.
Evidently, “a lot of other people” agree with Beebe. A total of 3,030,000 students drop out of high school annually. Broken down, that’s 8,300 a day, 857 per hour. The numbers are staggering.
... my opinion it is just a way it’s just a temporary act which does not last. Youth need to interact with peers, help in the decision making process, sense of belonging, and develop a value system. If we kick them out of school we are not helping them become respectful citizens in the community.
Even though there are financial reasons that men and women drop out from school, there are other reason as well to why they do it. Sometimes, they hang out with the wrong crowd of friends and make poor choices. They decide to join gangs and leave school because they decide that being in a gang is more important. They begin to act, dress, and do different things. They start stealing because they find it a lot easier to d and they get things
Students should be required to get a diploma or a GED because of better job opportunities, go to college, and have a job that has higher wages. So, students that are still in high school it would be best if you stayed in school and get your high school
How does dropping out of high school affects students’ lives in the future? Students’ dropping out has become a crisis, President Obama said, “It’s time for all of us to come together parents and students, principals, and teachers, business leaders and elected officials to end America’s dropout crisis” (“ President Obama”). There are 7 thousand students’ that drop out of high school that adds up to about 1.2 million each year, wouldn’t it be nice to drop that number and help kids stay in school instead of dropping out of high school(“ President Obama”). Students’ shouldn’t drop out of high school because they couldn’t go to college, couldn’t hold down a job, and would struggle making minimum wage for the rest of their life.
I do not agree with the bill that would require a person to earn a high school diploma before he or she can receive their driver's license. In high school, a lot of teens parents are not reliable enough to take them back and forth to school every day. If the teen lives far from the high school it makes it even harder for them to find a way to school. The two years between sixteen and eighteen give the teen time to learn driving skills and become better at driving. If they cannot get it till they are eighteen now it is the cause of a mistake they have made in early driving so they should not get it till then anyway.
Education is very important in our life. It measures our life chances and the window of opportunity to success in the society. Our education institution not only teaches us how to write, read and communicate thoroughly, but also social skills that enable us to become a productive citizen of society. The U.S. have taken enormous pride of its ability to provide top-notch education and freedom of its access. "It's the promise of American public education: no matter who you are or where you come from, you will be tugged gently along the path of learning, toward graduation and an open but hopeful future"(Dropout nation). However, the U.S. education is failing- one out of three students in public high school would not graduate, and for African American students, the rates is one out of two. Dropping out of school is no longer an occasion for bad students, but a social phenomenon, a silent epidemic that slowly eaten the strongest nation in the world. The causes of this epidemic is not one, but multifaceted: government, media and family are all part of its causes and solutions. In order to tackle this problem, we must identity our fault and short coming in the past.
Because of adolescence, they may think that school is “nothing”, it is just a waste of time. Also, facts have been saying that more and more students are being independent related to the school. A good reason that they are independent is that they want to have their own money. However, when we don’t know how to say no and face whatever problems may cause, we often use to drop out of college to avoid difficulties.
George F. Will’s “College President’s Plan: Abolish High School” conveys ideas that had never crossed my mind. He states, “For various reasons, some rooted in American history and others reflecting recent developments, education has become, for the moment, the most salient social concern and therefore the most potent political issue.” Will introduces Leon Botstein, who doesn’t actually option to abolish high school, just to change the structure of our schools in general. Botstein says that high school was created for 15- to 18-year-olds who were still children. In today’s society, those children are now young adults who are physiologically and psychologically more advanced.
When they drop out, they limit their opportunities and waste the money that was invested into them. There are opportunities available to students to obtain a free education and avoid financial hardships. Once students get into college they must stay focused on their education and perform to the best of their abilities to avoid remedial classes and graduate in the shortest time possible without debt. Once the student receives their degree they can take advantage of a wide variety opportunities available to those with a degree. By obtaining their degree students are taking advantage of the money that has been invested in them. All students to avoid situations that cause a lot of students to dropout from college. Students should take advantage of the opportunities given to them so they do not waste the money that others have invested in
Because of his successful life, Steve Jobs was invited to give the commencement speech at Stanford University in 2005. However, Jobs did not graduate higher education. In addition, he quite Reed Collage because the college did not suitable for his perspective of his life, and he also lacked tuition expenses for study (news.rapgenius.com.) Jobs is just an example of people who did not graduate from college. In the real world, people have many reasons why they drop out from school. Students leave school, even thought they do not graduate from schools because of financial aids, students’ interested, and crime.
Every 26 seconds one of our kids drops out of high school, that's 1.3 million students each year. The main reason for dropping out, the failure to succeed. Society puts an insurmountable amount of pressure on these kids to succeed, however this can actually be extremely detrimental to the students and children.
Schools can give responsibility to students but never without a cost. Students should have to chance to prove their worth to schools and show how responsible they can be as adults. When students go to college classes as high schoolers they sometimes tend to have more free time during those times. If a child has enough responsibility to take those classes they should have enough to leave school and be trusted to come back to school after their free time is over. Although leaving school early is not something that is smiled upon it should be because some students are ahead and can work their schedule to allow extra time because of hard work in early years.
Teens today face a lot of pressure. Many students deal with difficult life situations that hinder them from focusing on their futures. This can lead to a loss of interest in school and school events, such as a sports, clubs, or after school programs. Teens start to prioritize other things over their education. Every year, over 1.2 million students will leave school without earning a high school diploma in the United States alone (“11”). That’s a student every 26 seconds – or 7,000 a day (“11”). The United States, which used to have the highest graduation rates of any country, now ranks 22nd out of 27 developed countries (“11”). Students may not realize that by dropping out of high school they are more likely to commit crimes, become parents at a young age, use and abuse alcohol and drugs, and live in poverty (“Drop”). Dropouts make up the majority of those
