Dropping out is a personal decision, but many students feel like it's the best option if they have personal or academic issues. Research says, ¨More than 27 percent say that they leave school because they are failing too many classes. About 26 percent of students say that they dropped out to become caregivers to family members in need, and more than 20 percent say that school simply wasn't relevant to their lives,¨ (Learning Liftoff 2). You can legally drop out of high school at age 17 in SC, and you can’t join the military until you are age 17. High school dropouts should not be required to join the military because they may have to drop out for family or personal reasons, or just because they are failing too many classes. These categories are: Tier 1, Tier 2, and Tier 3(Education Credentials 1). Tier 1 military applicants should have a high school diploma, not a GED. Tier 2 applicants should have a GED, home study diplomas, alternative high school diplomas and occupational program certificates. Tier 2 applicants are a limited number allowed to enlist per year. Tier 3 applicants are almost non-existent in the 21st century armed services. They should be neither a high school graduate or an alternative school attendee. For some students, dropping out is the culmination of years academic hurdles, missteps, and wrong turns. For others, the decision to drop out is a response to conflicting life pressures -- the need to help support their family financially or the demands of caring for siblings or their own child. Dropping out is sometimes about students being bored and seeing no connection between academic life and "real" life (Furger).
Throughout the years the dropout rate of African Americans has increased and decreased. Many people look at black students as if they sit there and do not learn anything at all but we do try. Some may think that the only reason the black students drop out is because their grades, but that’s not true. Some dropout because of financial pressure, health problems, mental, emotional, and social issues, and may not have family support.
How does dropping out of high school affects students’ lives in the future? Students’ dropping out has become a crisis, President Obama said, “It’s time for all of us to come together parents and students, principals, and teachers, business leaders and elected officials to end America’s dropout crisis” (“ President Obama”). There are 7 thousand students’ that drop out of high school that adds up to about 1.2 million each year, wouldn’t it be nice to drop that number and help kids stay in school instead of dropping out of high school(“ President Obama”). Students’ shouldn’t drop out of high school because they couldn’t go to college, couldn’t hold down a job, and would struggle making minimum wage for the rest of their life.

She states that those who dropped out of school dropped out due to unexpected family issues, and/or personal problems. To others school is just a wastes of time. It was not as important as their jobs were. Some of the students dropped out because they did not have the time, some had to work at night and did not have time for homework.

Family issues contribute to student dropout rate. First, school can be overwhelming and students need support at home. If a parent doesn’t check and make sure school work is completed, then the child doesn’t see any reason to do the works, ends up failing and most likely drop out of school.
