According to Nilda Flores-Gonzalez most of those who drop out of school dropout because they lack in motivation. She states that those who dropped out of school dropped out due to unexpected family issues, and/or personal problems. To others school is just a wastes of time. It was not as important as their jobs were. Some of the students dropped out because they did not have the time, some had to work at night and did not have time for homework. Since they did not have the time for school and they were already doing poorly they decided that the best thing they could do at that moment was quit. Yet some of those who decide to quit also decide to go back to school to get their high school diploma. Those who go back to school often realize that …show more content…
They even become involved with school activities. Those who don’t are afraid of the school programs to get in the way of their education. Sadly some of those student who have dropped out and have returned to school keep doing poorly. They know that they need to improve on their grades and absences, but they don’t try their best to make a difference compared to their old behavior it. These students barely pass their classes and they graduate with the use of little effort. Staying in school can be a challenge. The students who decide to go back to school spend extra years in school in order to get ready to graduate. For many students who have dropped out of school they have the option to get a GED, but most students look forward to getting their high school diploma because to them it is more valuable than a GED. As a high school student they get a ceremony when getting their high school diploma. They get to walk across a stage in front of a lot of people, and most importantly in front of their family. They dread at the moment to walk the stage. (Flores-Gonzalez) A large number of those who return to school do so because of their families. They want to prove to themselves and to others that they can do it. They want to change the way they are being perceived by society. They want to live a life in which they know that they will be able to support themselves. They do not want to live what they call a …show more content…
He doesn’t want to give up on the student’s ability to do something extraordinary with their lives. He wants kids to prove that they can do anything if the propose it to themselves.
Dropping out of school brings many problems to the lives of many young adults. Dropping out of high school decreases the chance for young adults towards getting a higher education.
Having a job is known to get a in the way of the education of many students. When a student prefers to spend most of his or her time working rather than studying, than it becomes an issue where a job gets in the way of a student’s education leading him or her to drop out..
Yet, according Claude Montmarquette, Nathalie Viennot-Briot, and Marcel Dagenais a guy named Turner figured out that a student who did not have a job would spend a minimum of eighteen hours a week watching television and about one to four hours studying. Turner said that a job would not have an affect towards a student’ education if he or she worked at least twenty hours a week. Having a part time job of at least twenty hours a week reduces a student’s studying time by about seven minutes a week. That is a minute a
When Chris Langan was faced with a tough decision in college, he decided, “that was the point that I decided I could do without the higher education system” (Gladwell 94). Chris made a decision that not many people in America want to do or nonetheless, actually do. He carries the risk of affecting his entire future by not receiving a college degree and getting a job that he can support himself with. Chris also knows what is best for himself, and that everyone is different. He does the best for himself, and others will see. This type of situation will hopefully help others by influencing them to do the best for only themselves in order for them to feel like they have achieved the American Dream. Another situation that people may come across where they have to make a life-changing decision is as immigrants. At a young age, a “Brilliant immigrant kid overcomes poverty and the Depression, can’t get a job at the stuffy downtown law firms, [and] makes it on his own through sheer hustle and ability” (Gladwell 119). As it is, it is really hard to adjust to a new life in a new country. People do not know what to expect when they immigrate to a different country, even despite what they have heard from others. This difficult decision to go to a completely new place and start over is one that has to be made and
There are many different reasons why students decide to drop out of school, according to Stats Canada “Young men continue to have higher dropout rates then young women. In 2009/2010, 10.3% of young men and 6.6% of young women had dropped out of high school.” (Gilmore, 2010) Men have a higher rate of dropping out of school because they tend to want to work and make money rather than getting their education. Men are better known to not be that involved in school as much as women would and if they have the opportunities to have a job without their education they would opt to do that instead of staying in school because they would rather be making money then getting their education. They may feel that work is more of a priority and that making money is more important. Young women have different reasons than young men to why they may opt to drop out of school. “Young women were more likely to drop out because of personal or family reasons, such as pregnancy or having a young child at home.” (Gilmore, 2010)
“They don’t attend regularly and are so far behind that they have to drop out,” Joe Silsby, guidance counselor, said. “Sometimes, it’s lack of support and following through with things at school. No one forces them to be here.”
Summary: In the essay, “Part-time Employment Undermines a Student’s Commitment to School” by Laurence Steinberg, it explains how studies show that teenagers that work while attending school are more likely to loose their commitment to school. Steinberg tells the effects on students when they work more than twenty hours a week. His theory was that students are more susceptible to losing their interest in school, while working. They may have to work in the evening time, which can interfere with homework, sleep and diet. Steinberg also elaborated on how these students that work receive money that can make school seem less desirable. Also because they do receive money, they can use their extra money to become associated with drugs and alcohol.
Even though there are financial reasons that men and women drop out from school, there are other reason as well to why they do it. Sometimes, they hang out with the wrong crowd of friends and make poor choices. They decide to join gangs and leave school because they decide that being in a gang is more important. They begin to act, dress, and do different things. They start stealing because they find it a lot easier to d and they get things
Most people want a lot of job opportunities to choose from well in order to have those opportunities you have to have a diploma or GED. Other people might say that you can still get a good job even without a diploma or GED, most of the time those are low paying jobs at a fast food restaurant. The diploma can get you almost any job because most jobs require you to have a high school diploma or GED. Instead of always being passed by for the good jobs, you’ll have the opportunity to get jobs that are more interesting. Most people who just drop out of high school have a harder time

Another reason we drop out of college is that we want to be independent. A lot of news has been saying that students are sensitive during the adolescence. Because of adolescence, they may think that school is “nothing”, it is just a waste of time. Also, facts have been saying that more and more students are being independent related to the school. A good reason that they are independent is that they want to have their own money. However, when we don’t know how to say no and face whatever problems may cause, we often use to drop out of college to avoid difficulties.
When you get older and have kids do you want the story you tell them is that you dropped out of high school? Do you want the bank to think your dumb because you can't add when you're trying to buy a house? When you get older and have a family you don't wanna live your life with regrets, so stay in high school and you won't have any. Most people frown upon the adults who dropped out of high school. Do you want to be frowned upon your whole life because you made one stupid mistake when you were a kid?
Between 3.5 million and 6 million young people in America dropout of high school (Bloom). About 1 million students do not make their way to graduation (Koenig). Dropping out of high school will inhibit any students ability to go onto college. Studies show that if a student were to drop out of high school, the crime rate will be higher(Kokemuller). According to professional statistics, in 2010, the percentage of high school dropouts was at a high of seven percent (Henry). At age sixteen, if a student were to drop out of high school, this student would need a parent to sign for them, and there are many parents who also believe children need an education. In 2006, about sixty-seven births to dropouts were outside marriage and this is compared to the ten percent of births to women who have received their master's degree and a high school diploma (Bloom). There are many consequences in store for high school dropouts.
The causes are almost certainly many and consistent. What seems inescapable is the conclusion that dropping out of school is one of the important factors related to the difficulties of people. The causes of dropping out reveal families in trouble. All too often, families with areas of high pressure are characterized by single parents, lack of parenting skills, and substance abuse. The most common causes of dropping out are money, family, and time management.
First important reason why students drop out school is tuition expenses. In high schools and lower education, most of schools are funded by government, so parents does not much their budget for their children. In higher education, however, parents have to pay tuition. That is a painful problem for poor family. In poor families, they have low salary. Every single dollar is worth for them to survive such as homeless. They better have money for food than go to university because fo...
“One of the disadvantages of being a student while holding a job is that they are often short on time and commonly find themselves with limited time to study.” Students who have a job don’t have time to study when they get home from school because they have to leave right away or soon after to go to work. They are too tired to do any school work when they get home because it’s 10 o’clock at night. “In addition, working more than 30 hours a week during high school was associated with lower levels of future education attainment.” Students who work a large number of hours a week have less motivation to accomplish higher levels of
Nowadays in the era of globalization, students are encouraged to have work part-time that will create them to become more experienced in their future, teach them to become more independent and mature in real life. Although the students have enough money to pay their fees and able to accommodate the necessities of life but we totally agree that the working part-time should be encouraged because work part-time can give more benefits to students. According to King and Bannon (2002, p. 2), more than 50 percent of full-time students have jobs and “nearly 46% of all full-time employed students work 25 hours or more.” As students work more, they have less time to become engaged in campus life both inside and outside the classroom. Many students love to have part-time jobs. Their parents approve it easily as they are said to gain experience from working. However, having a job is a big responsibility for a student. Before, teenagers at their age were working to help their family because of poverty. Nevertheless, they were actually eager to study and learn at school for their future. It was not the same as the students nowadays where they are more likely competing to each other to have a job. Most of the students are working part-time jobs and some have the intention to work. When we are in any fast food restaurant, supermarket or shop, there are must be school students who are working. Besides, students can gain a lot of experiences, students should be encouraged to work part-time because they can learn new skills and learn how to manage their financial properly.
Many students feel like they have to go to high school, and as a result, do not care about their education nor put much emphasis on learning. Those who are educated know that an education is empowering, beneficial, and essential to a sophisticated society. It is very likely that many of these students would change their attitude if they realized the consequences of not having an education. Perhaps they would "own it" and take responsibility for their lives and decide to stay in school of their own accord. Maybe the reality of living paycheck to paycheck would make them realize that school is not so bad after
