There are many leadership skills and competencies that, when combined and applied, go toward making you an effective leader. Individuals have the ability to develop each of these skills within themselves. Successful leaders tend to have certain traits. Two keys areas of personal growth and development are fundamental to leadership success: self-confidence and a positive attitude. Self-confident people are usually inspiring, and people like to be around individuals who believe in themselves and in what they are doing. Likewise, if you are a positive and optimistic person who tries to make the best of any situation, you will find it much easier to motivate people to do their best. Self-confidence is built by mastering significant skills and situations, and by knowing that you can add real value to the work you do. One of the best ways to improve your confidence is to become aware of all of the things you have already achieved. …show more content…
However, being positive is much more than presenting a happy face to the world. A person needs to develop a strong sense of balance and recognize that setbacks and problems happen. The steps in dealing with those problems are what make the difference. Positive people approach situations realistically, prepared to make the changes necessary to overcome a problem. Negative people, on the other hand, often give in to the stress and pressure of the situation. This can lead to fear, worry, distress, anger, and failure. Stress management techniques, including sleep and relaxation, as well as physical exercise, are great ways of getting rid of negative thoughts and feelings. Understanding your thinking patterns, and learning to identify and eliminate negative thinking, are
According to Grossman and Valiga’s Leadership Characteristics and Skills Assessment, the interpretation of scores for perception of what makes a good leader gave me the following results: good perception of a good leader and the scores for perception of your own ability to lead resulted in low perceived leadership ability for myself (Grossman and Valiga, 2013). With these results, I have concluded that I have low confidence in my leadership skills and ability. This would be an area of improvement needing work on my part. Part of being a good leader is being confident in one’s abilities and skills. Who would want to follow a leader who has n...
...tion correctly. They must be psychologically mature to be able to make decisions that may involve stress. Leaders must also have enthusiasm to capture attention of their followers. In the workplace, when managers have energy and are active, it makes employees more enthusiastic as well. Leaders must also possess self-assurance and some would assume that confidence the most important key. Dao (2008) states that, “Self-confidence is the fundamental basis from which leadership grows. Trying to teach leadership without first building confidence is like building a house on a foundation of sand. It may have a nice coat of paint, but it is ultimately shaky at best.” A good leader must have that self-assurance to make decisions and lead others without being afraid. Confidence not only allows a leader to make tough decisions but to also lead a group of people with authority.
Throughout history, there have been great leaders: civil rights leaders, business leaders, and spiritual leaders who have inspired millions. Leaders and visionaries such as John Lennon or Martin Luther King Jr. fought for unity, love, and made an impact on people through their speeches or songs. Watching these great men touch the hearts of millions has brought out a desire for me to become a C.E.O. and an important leader in the life of others. Not only do leaders have knowledge in politics, in emotional values, and spread a certain message or “vision” to their followers or co-workers, but they have certain special characteristics which make them great leaders or heroes. So, what makes these people different from you and me? Could it be that they are better looking? Perhaps they speak in parables or give great speeches? People have often said to me that a good leader is a person who guides both physically and mentally. Going to the job shadowing program has given me an opportunity to broaden my view on how efficient and effective a good leader can be in the work place. Something that has been shown to me in my many interviews with the board of directors has been that every leader must have the capability to have integrity, listen, a vision, and must be responsible.
A key component to leadership is to master skills that one already possesses. The greatest leaders in the world do not necessarily stem from the best universities or some costly academic background. One of the strongest traits a person can have is understanding what their leadership style is. When one understands his or her leadership style this can work strongly to one 's advantage. The goal is to garner the best results with the least amount of effort whenever possible therefore many particulars exist which can add to this equation and understanding one’s personal leadership style is a great place to start.
2). Risk – Willing to take on a high risk, and engage in self-sacrifice to
Adding to that quality is confidence, and it’s a quality that every great leader requires. A great leader should desire to be assertive and confident; confidence in a leader doesn’t only make the leader look more appealing but also inspires trust. A confident leader has the ability to rally his/her followers to any cause.
Improving upon these traits can assist me not only in the workplace, but volunteer settings, university, or even my own personal environment. Knowing how to utilize these skills can boost my own personal confidence, as well as those around me, showing the importance of leadership in every-day life. This proves leadership is often transmitted through experience and practice, making it of value to demonstrate these qualities in every aspect in life. I can recall a situation in which I could have stepped up and lead an activity through my volunteer practicum at the SCRI society The Club, however I was not confident enough in my own abilities. I ended up regretting not leading the activity, which could have led to a possible position within the club, and often reflect on how I could have improved my leadership skills at that time to achieve my goal. Moving forward this will encourage me to improve upon such skills, and promote a better desire to understand what it is to be a
Our leadership in this world has changed and affected us greatly. Leadership is being about to lead an organization with many people and to have control in the right way. “ The Leader of the Future” a book by Peter F. Drucker gives us information on why and how it is to be such a great leader. We need better leaders and we need them to guide us and help us along the way. Without leadership, our world would be in such danger and we America would be going through a lot.
What makes a good leader? It depends. Most organizations look for individuals that have something to offer when they look at credentials or a great interview but looks can be deceiving does a good manager necessarily mean that a good leader I do not think so.
Trustworthiness in a leader will instill confidence in students, patients and other coworkers (Northouse, 2016, p. 38). Also, having a sense of empathy will show people that you understand and can relate to their problems (Northhouse, 2016, p. 38). The weakest traits were self-confidence, self-assured, and determined (Northhouse, 2016, p.38). Self-confidence has always been a weakness and something I continue to work on daily. As a leader, I must show confidence in myself in order for others to have confidence in
In my idea, leaders without self-confidence are not actually leaders. According to David Barrett (2010), “self-confidence is the fundamental basis from which leadership grows”. I am wondering without that conception, how leaders can influence and judge others. I want to believe in myself although I am not perfect but I would like to be confident in my leadership skills and every action I take for achieving common
To become a truly effective leader, one must encapsulate the various behaviors related to the aforementioned course learnings in his/her persona and demonstrate such behaviors daily. This course has allowed me to identify four behaviors that all leaders must portray to be effective. The first of which is that a leader must be inspirational. To do so, a leader must set the appropriate vision and direction for the organization and provide a path to achieving defined goals. Additionally, a leader must induce the proper levels of motivation so that each employee has sufficient incentive to work towards the organization’s goals. As discussed in the class, motivation can be accomplished by factors such as rewarding hard work and providing the correct opportunities to employees. While these are motivating in that employees desire to be fairly compensated and to be doing work they deem valuable, inspiration comes more from organizational culture. A leader will be inspirational by setting a tone that appreciates each employee’s contribution, no matter how small in scale it is. Further, employees are inspired when they work collaboratively in a group setting and can capitalize on individual strengths to drive organizational goals.
Leadership is essentially the ability to motivate. An effective leader can motivate others toward reaching a common goal. Leaders are different than managers in that leaders inspire others to do the work needed while managers generally tend to manage the tasks associated with completing the goal.
Self-confidence is one of the most important qualities that determine a good leader. Self-confidence is the belief in oneself and of one’s powers and abilities. It is the attitude that people possess that allows them to have positive views and to trust their own abilities. Self-confidence is an extremely important attribute to have. Leadership is all about having the confidence to make decisions. If they are afraid to make and commit to their decisions, all of the communication and authority they have will make no difference. They need to guts to motivate others, and if they waver even slightly, their followers will start to doubt them. An example of leaders having self-confidence is the students at school who organized their own clubs. They have the courage to pitch new ideas, and are not afraid to talk to other students about it. Teachers are natural born leaders. Everyday, they have to face hundreds of students to lead them onto the correct path through learning. Without self-confidence, they will not be able to do their job.
Throughout my life I have encountered the chance to experience position of being a leader. Being part of groups in university for class presentations, being the organizing secretary of my campus fellowship, being a youth leader in my church and the church admin, also being part of a family. Leaders are charismatic, inspirational and trust worthy. I have gained some important qualities of being a good leader through these experiences. Most of the valuable leadership’s characteristics that I obtained and strengthened are: learn to become a better leader every day, how to be a team player, to be a better listener, to be an effective communicator, to have more patience, not afraid of constructive criticism, to be outspoken, and to be a problem solver. Even though I have gained a lot, I still have more things to learn to become a better leader such as being more assertive, being more disciplined, becoming a better public speaker, and learn how to be realistic and not too optimistic. You are a leader if someone else choses to follow you.
