Out of all the texts closely studied in class; Listen deeply, let these stories in written by Kathleen Kemarre Wallace was one of my favourites. The title itself was beautiful. It felt like it was somewhat of an invitation to the reader, to come and listen and learn from the Indigenous people and about ancient traditions of the Altyerre spirits (it been a gift to us). The lavishly illustrated text, not only includes details of artworks, it too features traditional Eastern Arrernte stories in English and Eastern Arrernte, other traditional stories told by the author herself and attractive Aboriginal art relating to both Aboriginal culture and spiritual beliefs. Instead her story is carried in other kinds of marks: marks on the body, canvas, sand and rock. Her story is written so precisely, that it is able to shift between different medias; from written text to spoken word/voice to painting on canvas and ceramic tiles. Wallace’s book is extremely unique and astonishing for the ways it engages with questions of difference, translation, including reading and writing in its very physical form. Additionally, the text was easy to read, with the concept that the style in which it was written in was easy to understand and follow, hence the photos gave extra context to what was happening, allowing for the stories to be easily understood.
