I enjoyed reading the article enhancing diversity in nursing , the article has a lot of good point and recommendations on how to enhance the diversity in nursing workforce but, some of the requirement to me it’s already sound like it will automatically eliminate some of the minorities. One good example is the eligibility criteria which include having record of leadership activities in class, GPA of 3.0 or greater and the students must complete the nursing major in the specified time frame. To me I do think that if we want to help the memories we cannot treat them as regular student we should lower or eliminate some of the criteria for eligibility. It is impossible for anybody with the right mind to recommend another person from the same demographic to join the field you are trying run was from. According to Walden (2013) to increase our cultural diversity, we not only need to encourage diversity in our nursing student population, but we also need to create an accepting environment for our coworkers. Studies have shown that even when minority nurses enter the workforce, they have a higher than normal rate of leaving nursing in the first few years of practice. Altruistic motivations for career choices aside, it 's easier to recruit workers into a profession that rewards its members for their hard work, education, and performance. It is a useful approach for new nurses as it provides them with effective and systematic support in the nursing practice, facilitates their professional development, and enhances the coordination of care within the unique context of general practice. The profession of Nursing, and the world in general, are both full of diversity. Diversity can be defined in terms of ethnicity, gender, beliefs, culture, or location. In the field of nursing, diversity may not only be seen among coworkers, but also among the patients that the nurses treat. Diversity is one thing, I have come to accept and appreciate greatly in my life. I am 22 years old and was born in Ghana, West Africa. To me, I see myself as an African woman. Reasoning being that both my parents are Africans but from different tribes. I was brought up through the general Ghanaian way, but having my parents from different ethnic groups taught me how to adapt to different cultures and I believe that was where my experience with diversity began. The African continent do have some similarities in the cultures, but being brought up with the Ghanaian culture and norms has really helped me and shaped me to be the respectful and humbled woman I am today. Nursing mainly focuses on personal, family as well as community care in ensuring they maintain and recover their health (Aiken et al., 647). Nurses can be distinguished from other providers of health care by their training, practice, and the approach towards patient care. A research shows that the gender differences and its boundary prevent male practitioners to be as equal as female practitioners (Christensen and Knight 98-99). Their study aims on nursing students in the New Zealand and its findings are men could not be able to cope with male patients and female patients (Christensen and Knight 98-99). The findings show that a male nursing student, who has 2 years of study, was being denied to access a girl school, where his class supposed to practise their nursing skills. He could not even step in the playground while kids were around due to gender limitation and people think it was a necessity act in order to prevent something that they could not predict that could harm the children, but it was fine for female nursing students to practise in that place (Christensen and Knight 98-99). Thus, being a man in the nursing major has a huge amount of limitations and it is clear that why many men choose to not major in nursing. In addition, an article mentions about male nurses’ tokenism in hospital setting that differs from the female that male nurses are not as equal as their colleagues, female nurses, because there were a huge amount of events that were held in hospitals for the staff but it was not men included (Floge and Merril 933). This could explain that the gender equality is a problem to preventing men become nurses.
