In life there are many times when we experience hardships, challenging times, and crisis. During these tough times, we are tested; our ability to stay positive is certainly tested during these times as well. We tend to get down on ourselves and in turn, we start feeling as if the world is against us. Everything that we do goes wrong, no matter what we do. Then we begin to doubt ourselves and get deeper into the pit. The author is no different; there have been times when the author has gone through a challenging experience or a crisis. A couple of years ago the author experienced a situation that challenged his will to continue working with his company. It was not a crisis; however, it was a challenging experience. This experience happened when the author applied for a position that would have given him a promotion. The experience began when the phone rang one early morning in March 2014. That morning of March in 2014, as the author was sleeping after a long night at work, the phone rang, and he woke up and answered the phone. On the other line was a human resource …show more content…
The author very optimistic applies for the position; however, his optimism quickly turns pessimistic. He turns pessimistic because the position requires a bachelor’s degree. This experience quickly turned into a challenging one. This prompted a conversation with the author’s manager, in which he was supportive and tried to keep him optimistic. Nevertheless, he let him know that even though he wanted to as for an exception; there was nothing he could do about the degree requirement. Both of these two similar situations prompted the author to go through a rollercoaster of emotions. After the first situation, the author felt pessimistic about his future with the company. Shortly after that, thanks to some positive thinking and actions, that quickly turned in to optimism. The second situation prompted the same emotions once

Upon being faced with adversity many individuals are prone to shutting down but true strength derives from the ability to become stronger from obstacles in your path and how you develop them into opportunities. Throughout a person’s lifespan, an individual will always be confronted with hard and difficult obstacles that they must overcome such as the divorce of parents, the death of a loved one, or even relocating homes. Resilience is the ability to cope with change. The resilience has long been touted as a essential capability for bouncing back from leadership setbacks. Resilience is not easily attainable in today’s ever-changing business environment. The faith that there will be an immediate solution when it’s not immediately evident, and the tenacity to carry-on despite a nagging gut feeling that the situation is hopeless; it requires courage to achieve such high level of success in one’s career. A strong leader tries to keep away frequent setbacks and new challenges in face of uncertainty. People don't truly accept life for what it is until they've actually tasted adversity and went through those misfortunes and suffering. We are put through many hardships in life, and we learn to understand and deal with those issues along the way. We find that life isn't just about finding one's self, but about creating and learning from our experiences and background. Adversity shapes what we are and who we become as individuals. Yann Martel's Life of Pi shows us that adverse situations help shape a person's identity and play a significant role in one's lief by determining one's capabilities and potential, shaping one's beliefs and values, and defining the importance and meaning of one's self.
