Success Through Adversity

“Strength does not come from winning. Your struggles develop your strengths. When you go through hardships and decide not to surrender, that is strength.” – Mahatma Gandhi Adversity, can be a breaking point in one’s life, some use it is as fuel, others use it as an excuse, either way each and everyone of us must confront it during our lifetime. It is those of us who stand up to the challenge and use our troubles to build strength, that will succeed through times of difficulty. Those who overcome adversity build character. The challenge however, is to understand a way to deal with hardships, and triumph through times of toughness. Many people endure one problem after another, if they never learn from their errors they may never fix the problem. To overcome adversity, we must learn from our past failures, which inevitably will help shape our future success. Simply by understanding reasons for a distress will help in preventing a reoccurrence of a mistake. Other individuals in life have shown us this is true and more so, used their upsets as fuel to succeed. Considered the Greatest of All Time or rather the ‘G.O.A.T’, Michael Jordan, an NBA player taught the world we must learn from our mistakes. He was part of two gold-medal winning teams at the Olympics, won NBA’s Most Valuable Player five times, and dominated the court for over a decade during the 80’s. When he tried out for his high school varsity’s basketball team during his sophomore year, he was left off the roster. They claimed he was too small. The day he got rejected, Jordan went inside his room and cried. What was believed to be a terrible outcome, became a defining moment for him. From that day on, Michael was determined to become better than everyone else. He made up his mind stating that he would never face a similar situation ever again. Quickly, he started practicing day after day, making a point that success was a greater occurrence than failure. This was all a direct result of learning from his mistakes. Jordan understood what was needed to overcome adversity and indeed used the failure as fuel. Now he is known as a face of basketball, and attributes much of his success towards his strength gained from adversity. “I’ve failed over and over and over again in my life… and that is why I succeed” – Michael
