Michael Jordan, considered the greatest basketball player in history, once said, “If you're trying to achieve, there will be roadblocks. I've had them; everybody has had them. But obstacles don't have to stop you. If you run into a wall, don't turn around and give up. Figure out how to climb it, go through it, or work around it.” This quote portrays the mindset Jordan had while he was struggling to achieve his dreams. The effectiveness of his mindset proved that we can turn it into a powerful weapon that will help us excel in life. Michael Jordan had a positive mindset. He didn’t give up after failing the first time. He kept trying to get where he wanted. His mindset defined him, much like how our mindsets define us. Whether we are optimistic or pessimistic, it plays a huge role in our journeys. Someone who is pessimistic may never achieve his dreams because he constantly doubts himself. He believes that he will constantly fail. Those who have gained success embrace failure because that is what makes them stronger and smarter the next time they work toward their goal. Our mindset is what defines our success because it is what will make us work hard and put an effort into achieving our dreams, no matter how many failures come first.
Every single one of us is unique in our own way. We each have our own set of beliefs and that is what makes us different from one another. We think and process ideas differently. There isn’t one specific mindset that all of us can have that will make us successful. It is more about deciding what we can change to better ourselves. The way we act in different situations portrays how our minds work in different ways. It can be related to the fight or flight response, where some people may...

In retrospect, our mindset greatly defines who we are. Whether we want to make an effort toward achieving our goals or not, our mindset makes us do that. Michael Jordan didn’t stop trying until he achieved his goal, no matter how many failures he went through. He could accept failure, but he couldn’t accept not trying. Failure helped him become more successful, just like it has helped many others such as Tom Brady. Brady learned from his mistakes and became better at his job. These examples show us that our mindset can completely change our lives if we let it. If we change certain parts of our mindset such as being positive, accepting failure, and doing nothing less than hard work, then we can all become successful in whatever path we want to take.
“There is no elevator to success, you have to take the stairs,” was said by motivational speaker and American author Zig Ziglar. This relates to Carol S. Dweck’s article “Brainology” and Sherman Alexie’s essay “Superman and Me.” Ziglar, Dweck, and Alexie all feel that it isn’t easy for someone to become successful. It takes hard work, perseverance, and the want to learn and grow. In Dweck’s article, she stated that someone with a growth mindset would become more successful and knowledgeable than someone with a fixed mindset, which was demonstrated by Alexie in his essay, and by a personal experience of my own.
The famous retired basketball player Michael Jordan sees eye to eye with Gladwell vision of success. According to Michael Jordan “ I’ve missed more than 9000 shots in my career.I’ve lost almost 300 games. 26 Times, I’ve been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I’ve failed over and over and over again that is why I succeed.” by using facts and figures Michael Jordan highlights all his failures and how he grew from them and that to get to success you need work and
To continue on there are always two options, just give up or keep on pushing until the goal has been reached. The people that decide to just quit most likely have a fixed mindset, while the people that don’t give up have a growth mindset. Eduardo Briceno discusses that when obtaining a growth mindset, setbacks don’t take a toll on the person, they will continue to press on until the goal has been reached. Briceno’s point is that when you realize that anything is possible, then you bring yourself to new levels. Overall having a growth mindset allows people to complete any realistic goal that they
Everyone wants to get better at something, but some want it more than others. In “How to Transform an Everyday, Ordinary Hoop Court into a Place of Higher Learning and You at the Podium”, the narrator wants to get better at basketball, so he wakes up everyday at 4:30 to go with his dad to his work. Everyday, the narrator would wait 3 hours in his dad’s car until the gym opened, only to sit on the bench and watch the other men play basketball. Finally, one of the best players, Dante, tells the narrator he can play but he’ll get “smoked”. However, the narrator proved him wrong. The narrator learns that if you persevere, work hard, and have confidence, your dreams may come true. In How to Transform an Everyday, Ordinary Hoop Court into a Place
“Forget your past, your customs, your ideals. Select a goal and pursue it with all your might. You will experience a bad time but sooner or later you will achieve your goal. A bit of advice for you: do not take a moment’s rest.” I like this specific phrase, because it encourages me to pursue my dreams even if I encounter failure. In my opinion, in the past when poor people from a different place immigrate starting a new life. They needed sense of motivation and they encounter different situation where they wanted to give up and some of them persisted.
In the article The Mindset of a Champion Carol Dweck explains how important the mindset of an athlete is. Dweck goes into great detail about the differences of a growth and fixed mindset and how it influences athletes and students, Dweck mentions some of the characteristics of someone with a fixed mindset and she does the same with someone with a growth mindset. Someone with a fixed mindset typically sees their abilities as a fixed trait, they also believe that talent is a gift you either have it or you don’t, in the contrary someone with a growth mindset usually believes that people can cultivate their abilities. Dweck also mentions how sometimes a person can hold one mindset about intelligence and another about sports. The central psychological concept of this article is how your mindset affects your motivation to excel in your sport or school work. In the article Dweck discusses a few experimental studies, she was a part of, in the first experiment she indicates her hypothesis: students with a fixed mindset were more likely to cheat or give up. Independent variable: a group of students given a test in a new subject. Dependent Variable: a group of students given a test in a subject they enjoy. they found that those with a fixed mindset were more likely to say that if they did poorly on a test, even if it were in a new course they would most likely study less or even cheat on the next test. This example, provides great proof of Dweck’s definition of a fixed mindset.
Dr. Dweck’s book Mindset focuses on her research on how a person’s beliefs help shape the success in their life. Each of us have a mindset that is either a growth mindset or a fixed mindset. Our mindset influences how we face challenges, bounce back from setbacks and our tendency to stereotype others.
“I always hope for the best in every situation and do everything in my power to make it happen.”(Willis) Her response shows that hoping for the best and trying as hard as possible brings success for most. Willis responded with the following about others success with this quote. “It helps them strive to make things better.”(Willis) This shows that Willis believes that hoping for the best can help others strive to make everything better. Willis believes the biggest obstruction to success is the following. “The biggest obstruction was learning to let go of the hurt in my past and learning to use it to better myself and achieve my dreams.”(Willis) This response shows that past failures can be the best fuel for future
It is not uncommon to hear a professional football player coming back from an injury stronger than they were before; this is the mindset of overcoming adversity in failure. The idea that just because one can not do it now does not mean everything is over. “Failure is the only thing that leads one to success” (Stackvids). Through failure one rebuilds to become stronger. Overcoming adversity in all aspects is not easy; people go into a fight or flight state of mindset. It is easy to cut one's losses and do something else but even harder to fight through it. “This fact alone separates the 256 that make it and the 15,332 that do not”(Hilton).
Paying close attention to what Jordan was saying during his interviews, I became more and more inspired to keep on practicing. One of the most memorable quotes by Jordan that he said in that video was, “I can accept failure, everyone fails at something. But I can't accept not trying.” this quote has been my motivation each time i’ve failed to do something. After the video, I was eager to go and practice even more.
Of course, people need to be talented to play basketball; unfortunately, if they don’t have the right attitude then they aren’t going to reach their fullest potential. Maxwell provides the reader with an immense amount of personal stories to try and prove his point. It makes a person think about all of the times when they had something like that happen to them; in other words, it puts it in perspective for them. Maxwell wants people to read this book and be able to recognize how an individuals' attitude can impact their performance. Maxwell discussed how a person’s attitude can determine their success or failure and how their attitude can turn problems into blessings. He also talked about how using his four principles can lead a person to a road toward their growing potential. With the four principles being concentrate on one main goal, concentrate on continual improvement, forget the past, and to focus on the future. Lastly, what shapes a person’s personality has the ability to influence a person’s attitude. The topics that I found the most relatable are our physical appearance to others, marriage, family, and a person’s job can affect
Have you finally reached a point in your professional life, where you want to start a home business and get out of the rat race for good? If you answered yes, then you need to conquer getting over the wrong employee mindset and instead adopt a millionaire mindset. The right mindset can be the difference between success and failure when attempting to start an Internet business. Each successful entrepreneur that has created a business online, has the right mindset.
In a fixed mindset, people trust their prime abilities, like their intelligence or talent, are solely fixed qualities. They devote their time authenticating their intelligence or talent instead of improving them. Individuals also rely on that their talent alone produces success, without effort. They’re mistaken. In a growth mindset, individuals trust that their most undeveloped skills can be developed through perseverance and hard work, talent and brains are just the preliminary point. This outlook generates a love for learning and a flexibility that is vital for great achievements. Essentially all great people have had these potentials and qualities..
This was the lesson I learnt from my father, an unceasing learner and a person who would never give up no matter how many and how difficult the obstacles may be. Having understood from him that success is a moving target, the years of my life with my family have inculcated in me a desire to achieve perfection.
In conclusion, it is explicit that sports is a positive influence on athletes, spectators and the world as a whole as it teaches imperative life lessons as well as allows its participants to experience enjoyment, fulfilment and gratification. As mentioned previously sports enables its players to bring out the best in others and create unity amongst groups as team work is so essential. This highlights the views I have in conjunction with the views of Joe Humphrey.
