I Believe in the Importance of Perseverance
During my childhood years, I have always been fascinated about basketball. As I grew up and played basketball more and more, it became a clear to me that one day I dream to become a very good basketball player. The game of basketball has always fascinated me because the game is not as simple, “putting the ball in the hoop”, it requires skill and strategy in order to do so. In order to become that great player I strive to be, I need to put in time and effort. Through sheer practice and perseverance, I know that maybe one day, I can be as good as the pros playing basketball in the NBA.
When I was younger, the idea of perseverance was not as important to me as it is now. Each time I failed at a certain

As I got more and more frustrated, I gave up and decided to call it a night. I called and waited for my sister to come and pick me up, within minutes we were home. My frustrations from practice slightly faded as I came to our apartment and saw my mother cooking one of my favorite filipino dishes, the aroma of that dish made my mouth watery and made me hungry. When I started eating, I also started watching videos from YouTube, whilst eating I watched basketball plays which later turned to player interviews. Almost done with my dish, I stumbled upon a motivational video that included Michael Jordan, the video consisted of a compilation of Jordan clips, highlights, and interviews. Paying close attention to what Jordan was saying during his interviews, I became more and more inspired to keep on practicing. One of the most memorable quotes by Jordan that he said in that video was, “I can accept failure, everyone fails at something. But I can't accept not trying.” this quote has been my motivation each time i’ve failed to do something. After the video, I was eager to go and practice even more. From that day forth, I started to learn from my failures to make myself even better instead of giving
“Most of the important things in the world have been accomplished by people who have kept on trying when there seemed to be no help at all. Dale Carnegie believed that perseverance could overcome even the harshest obstacles. Perseverance is inspired by a purpose, an unsatisfied drive to achieve a goal. During a cataclysmic event, only people with a purpose endure.
... front of me since the road to success is far away. Facing unknown obstacles is like drowning in water because obstacles are weighted heavily and sometimes I can't lift it. I just have to use my strength and hopefully, I can raise it off me. I learned that sometimes it is better to have a little false hope than to have none. Perseverance doesn’t not come naturally to all people but eventually it will come because they will find it. It helps them find their inner self by going through obstacles so that they can be more of a life challenge. I believe that this can change a person who they are because it is something everyone needs to go through life.
On top of that, I learned a valuable lesson from the failure and the loss as well. From that day forth, the past experiences transformed me to be a hard-working and responsible person. Furthermore, I acknowledged that when something bad happens, it can prepare us for the future obstacles, so let always be optimistic and never give up on trying.
The Merriam Webster Dictionary defines perseverance as the continued effort to do or achieve something despite difficulties, failure, or opposition. In today’s society, there are so many walls and barriers that prevent humans from achieving their dreams and goals and people begin giving up. However, great poets such as Homer and famous music groups such as Mumford and Sons have used the strife of humanity to compose works that can be used to inspire and institute hope for humanity. With perseverance, there are three key aspects, struggle, loyalty, and strength. The struggle is what allows humans to learn, grow, and better themselves, the loyalty demonstrated provides motivation for success, and the personal strength allows the person to build
Starting my freshman year at County High School, I played basketball and loved every minute of it. I wouldn’t be conceited enough to say I was good, but God did bless me with the talent to play. My life revolved around the sport of basketball; some would say I slept, ate, and breathed every part of it. I spent all my time training and practicing to make myself a more dedicated athlete. This dedication not only helped me as a player, but also molded me into the person I am today. It somehow helped to prepare me for what defeat I would face with back surgery in the future.
Most people have never had to persevere-holding onto that last sliver of hope-as much as nine American boys who were thrown from their small Washington towns onto the international stage, back in 1936. Don Hume, Joe Rantz, Shorty hunt, Stub McMillin, Johnny White, Gordy Adam, Chuck Day, Roger Morris, and Bobby Moch were all part of The University of Washington's inspirational 1936 Olympic crew. Each of these rowers had their own stories of perseverance, determination, and grit bringing them together to work magic on the water. They trusted each other, relied on each other, and most importantly they had total confidence that “no man would pull the full weight of the boat”. So what you need to understand is that these boys were not born with silver spoons in their mouths and they had to work hard to succeed. This crew was composed of sons of loggers, shipyard workers, and farmers, not sons of businessmen or lawyers like the crews back east, like Harvard or Yale, were made up of. They persevered and had the drive to succeed, and it payed off after years of work with a gold medal in the 1936 Olympics in Berlin and the satisfaction of wiping the smile off Aldoph Hitler's and his German crew faces. Perseverance is the steady persistence in a course of action, a state, etc., especially in spite of difficulties, obstacles, or discouragement.
My perseverance has prepared me for a career in medicine. The path towards becoming a physician can be long and challenging, necessitating the ability to endure. My ability to bounce back from setbacks and mistakes has solidified throughout my journey. One of the cornerstone experiences of my personal development occurred during high school. My determination led to me my graduating as valedictorian of my class, while balancing three varsity sports and several extracurricular activities. In addition, I worked on weekends to help support my family financially. This persistence resulted in scholarship awards that made higher education a possibility.
“If at first you don’t succeed try , try again.” At the age of six I was starting to play football. The game was a hard hitting running and commitment. I was six years old at the time now I’m fourteen a freshman in high school a lot has changed.
Perseverance, dedication, and discipline, these are the qualities that have been instilled in me throughout my training. My sport requires failing repeatedly until consistency is found in perfection. Therefore, perseverance proved crucial as I attempted skill progressions and difficult routines. Dedication was essential whenever I watched others miss practice for social events. I didn’t recognize the immediate benefits of my deep rooted commitment until months and years later; now I have applied this devotion to every aspect of my life.
I learned how valuable perseverance is because of video games. Super Smash Bros. for the Wii U is one of my favorite games that has taught me the importance of this. In the past, I was never able to beat my friend, but I never gave up because of that loss. I continued to practice the game until I was eventually able to win. This transitioned over to the tournaments that I enter. Perseverance is what drives me to improve so that I can win. Video games are apart of me because they taught me to persevere in
Everyone wants to get better at something, but some want it more than others. In “How to Transform an Everyday, Ordinary Hoop Court into a Place of Higher Learning and You at the Podium”, the narrator wants to get better at basketball, so he wakes up everyday at 4:30 to go with his dad to his work. Everyday, the narrator would wait 3 hours in his dad’s car until the gym opened, only to sit on the bench and watch the other men play basketball. Finally, one of the best players, Dante, tells the narrator he can play but he’ll get “smoked”. However, the narrator proved him wrong. The narrator learns that if you persevere, work hard, and have confidence, your dreams may come true. In How to Transform an Everyday, Ordinary Hoop Court into a Place
I adore basketball. That also reminds me of this quote: “Athletes are driven by commitment. To their sport. To themselves. To excellence itself. Commitment fuels the extra mile. The final set. The last quarter. Going on when the body begs to stop. A winner makes commitments. A loser makes promises. Even when you’ve played the game of your life. It’s the feeling of teamwork that you’ll remember. You’ll forget the plays. The shots. And the scores. But you’ll never forget your teammates. BASKETBALL. My anti-Drug.” I like that quote, but I cannot say I fully agree with it. Anyways, I can think of many basketball lovers, but ones that truly are, will not give up on themselves. They will have the patience and the mind to dribble the ball steadily, reach for success, but capture their dreams. Life is a basketball court.
Of course, people need to be talented to play basketball; unfortunately, if they don’t have the right attitude then they aren’t going to reach their fullest potential. Maxwell provides the reader with an immense amount of personal stories to try and prove his point. It makes a person think about all of the times when they had something like that happen to them; in other words, it puts it in perspective for them. Maxwell wants people to read this book and be able to recognize how an individuals' attitude can impact their performance. Maxwell discussed how a person’s attitude can determine their success or failure and how their attitude can turn problems into blessings. He also talked about how using his four principles can lead a person to a road toward their growing potential. With the four principles being concentrate on one main goal, concentrate on continual improvement, forget the past, and to focus on the future. Lastly, what shapes a person’s personality has the ability to influence a person’s attitude. The topics that I found the most relatable are our physical appearance to others, marriage, family, and a person’s job can affect
Courage, Selflessness and Perseverance. Do these three words bring something in mind for you? For me, it brings up heroism. All the three words mentioned above connect to make up a hero. Examples of heroes can be made-up characters such as Superman and Batman.
Persevere To persevere is a trait used to identify a person who never gives up and endures what life throws at him or her. People who work hard push themselves to the end through challenging times are the ones who succeed in life. According to brainyquote.com, the sixth President of the United States, John Quincy Adams, once said, “Courage and perseverance have a magical talisman, before which difficulties disappear and obstacles vanish into air.”
