Introduction Attitude 101 What Every Leader Needs to Know is a book about leadership. Attitude plays a major role in leadership, and nothing will ever be accomplished to its greatest potential if someone doesn’t have the right attitude. However, with a positive attitude anything is possible, which is what John Maxwell was discussing throughout his book. A persons leadership skills will influence the way their followers think and feel. This book helps people with realizing how important it is to have a good attitude. Someone could have everything going for them and still fail because of their attitude. For example, Maxwell had discussed a personal example of him having a bad attitude resulting in him not being able to reach his potential. When he was in high school he played on the school’s basketball team, after …show more content…
Of course, people need to be talented to play basketball; unfortunately, if they don’t have the right attitude then they aren’t going to reach their fullest potential. Maxwell provides the reader with an immense amount of personal stories to try and prove his point. It makes a person think about all of the times when they had something like that happen to them; in other words, it puts it in perspective for them. Maxwell wants people to read this book and be able to recognize how an individuals' attitude can impact their performance. Maxwell discussed how a person’s attitude can determine their success or failure and how their attitude can turn problems into blessings. He also talked about how using his four principles can lead a person to a road toward their growing potential. With the four principles being concentrate on one main goal, concentrate on continual improvement, forget the past, and to focus on the future. Lastly, what shapes a person’s personality has the ability to influence a person’s attitude. The topics that I found the most relatable are our physical appearance to others, marriage, family, and a person’s job can affect
In Jim Naughton’s book Taking To The Air, the main character is Michael Jordan. The book is Jordan’s life and talents. Michael Jeffrey Jordan was born February 17, 1963, in Brooklyn, New York. He was the fourth child and the youngest of three boys. Michael Jordan is by any measure, the most popular athlete in America and perhaps the best-known figure in the world. I have chosen to use Maslow’s Theory of Hierarchy of Need to analysis Jordan’s personality. I will do my analysis by focusing on Jordan’s healthy personality, which is marked by his continued personal growth.
This can help us to be more successful, teach us of challenging ourselves to reach new heights, never give up and motivate us to do more so to enhance our intelligence. Furthermore, having a growth attitude is not something conceptual or something no one but others can have. It’s an incredible inverse: there are particular things you can do each day to sustain a development attitude. In case I haven't made it clear enough already: skill is something you can cultivate, not merely something you're born with. You can become more creative, more intelligent, more athletic, more artistic, and more successful by focusing on the process, not the outcome. Instead of worrying about winning the championship, commit to the process of training like a champion. It's not about the result, it's about building the identity of the type of person who gets to enjoy those
Sports specialization among young people is when a child or teenager trains for and competes in only one sport. They work extremely hard year-round in order to become well-rounded in every aspect of the game. They make sacrifices and put their health in jeopardy in order to become the ultimate participant in their sport. One of the many young athletes who is only participating in and focusing on one sport is fifteen-year-old OJ Mayo from Cincinnati, Ohio. He is the young talented athlete who is predicted to be the next LeBron James in the National Basketball Association (NBA). This young athlete provides evidence of striving for perfection in this single sport when reviewing his daily schedule versus that of his siblings. He says, “The other kids go home and sleep. I come back to the gym” (Thompson, 2004). He is obviously putting forth a lot of effort in his sport to become successful at an early age.
Everyone wants to get better at something, but some want it more than others. In “How to Transform an Everyday, Ordinary Hoop Court into a Place of Higher Learning and You at the Podium”, the narrator wants to get better at basketball, so he wakes up everyday at 4:30 to go with his dad to his work. Everyday, the narrator would wait 3 hours in his dad’s car until the gym opened, only to sit on the bench and watch the other men play basketball. Finally, one of the best players, Dante, tells the narrator he can play but he’ll get “smoked”. However, the narrator proved him wrong. The narrator learns that if you persevere, work hard, and have confidence, your dreams may come true. In How to Transform an Everyday, Ordinary Hoop Court into a Place

In the article The Mindset of a Champion, Carol Dweck explains how important the mindset of an athlete is. Dweck goes into great detail about the differences between a growth and fixed mindset and how it influences athletes and students, Dweck mentions some of the characteristics of someone with a fixed mindset and she does the same with someone with a growth mindset. Someone with a fixed mindset typically sees their abilities as a fixed trait, they also believe that talent is a gift you either have it or you don’t, on the contrary, someone with a growth mindset usually believes that people can cultivate their abilities. Dweck also mentions how sometimes a person can hold one mindset about intelligence and another about sports. The central psychological concept of this article is how your mindset affects your motivation to excel in your sport or school work.
The athlete and really the sport overall I chose to focus on throughout the course of this paper is the football player and the mindset in which he operates, while in what seems to become his natural environment and other factors which may alter that mindset in a positive or negative way. Having experience as a football player from my youth until present day helps to really analyze the mindset and thinking of this specific athlete and express through experiences my thoughts and feelings concerning my research found. Paul Bear Bryant a very well-known and respected coach for many years in the college football world once said, “When you make a mistake, there are only three things you should ever do about it: admit it, learn from it, and don’t repeat it.” This quote is an excellent example of football psychology and the type of thinking a football player must have, which is also helpful to have off the field. Mistakes are going to happen, learn from them and get better. Football is all about training the mind, which alters the behavior on the field.
What is with the attitude? This is a question that a reader asks himself or herself when reading a writer’s masterpiece. Readers ask themselves this question because they have no thoughts of the writer’s intentions using attitude in their writings. It takes a short time to analyze what is the attitude of the writer and give our own outputs of what is the writer’s attitude. However, the duration to ponder what are the writer’s intentions when using attitude takes a longer time to think about. One uses attitude differently than other writers.
Sports are often identified to have positive influences on many individuals. The sports industry is growing worldwide, especially the basketball industry, which is regarded in second place behind football. The global prevalence of basketball is unquestionable, especially among the young. Basketball is a dynamic team sport that involves a pattern of alternating, active, and skilled movement activities. There are compound demands that require a mixture of individual skills, team plays, strategies, and motivational aspects.
Oxford Dictionaries defines attitude as a settled way of thinking or feeling about someone or something, typically one that is reflected in a person’s behavior (Attitude, n.d.). There are numerous assumptions about attitude and human behavior regarding how leaders interact with followers which can forecast productivity and success levels of both in their roles. As indicated by Lussier and Achua (2013), “Successful leaders have positive, optimistic attitudes” (p. 49). This essay will identify how Theory X, Theory Y, the Pygmalion effect, and self-concept are similar and different. In addition, some observed examples of these
To become a truly effective leader, one must encapsulate the various behaviors related to the aforementioned course learnings in his/her persona and demonstrate such behaviors daily. This course has allowed me to identify four behaviors that all leaders must portray to be effective. The first of which is that a leader must be inspirational. To do so, a leader must set the appropriate vision and direction for the organization and provide a path to achieving defined goals. Additionally, a leader must induce the proper levels of motivation so that each employee has sufficient incentive to work towards the organization’s goals. As discussed in the class, motivation can be accomplished by factors such as rewarding hard work and providing the correct opportunities to employees. While these are motivating in that employees desire to be fairly compensated and to be doing work they deem valuable, inspiration comes more from organizational culture. A leader will be inspirational by setting a tone that appreciates each employee’s contribution, no matter how small in scale it is. Further, employees are inspired when they work collaboratively in a group setting and can capitalize on individual strengths to drive organizational goals.
Attitudes What are attitudes? How are they formed, measured and changed? What degree of influence do they exert on behavior? What important effects does prejudice have on attitudes, and how is prejudice caused? These are all questions that are central to the study of social psychology and, by reviewing the findings of psychological research into these areas, this essay will attempt to provide a balanced explanation of the topic.
It is very common in this day and age to become discontent with where you are at in leadership. One of the reasons for this discontentment can be because influencing all of those around us is not an easy thing to do. If we are to not only stay content, but also excel in leadership we must keep in mind that ninety-nine percent of leadership does not come from the top of any given organization, but the middle. John C. Maxwell, author of The 360-Degree Leader, speaks to us about the principles that leaders can use to bring value and influence to any organization from any level within the organization, enabling them to do, what John C. Maxwell describes as leading up, leading across, and leading down.
Firstly, it is vital to note that anxiety, motivation, and concentration tremendously influence people's self-confidence and their performance at the long-run (Damon & Raedeke, P 188). Higher self-confidence reduces anxiety. The vice versa is also true. This is based on the fact that optimally confident sports people experience fewer doubts on self. Their worries reduce and give room for concentration in their activities. Additionally, motivated athletes are in a better position to strive towards achieving their goal. Motivation enables sports people to combat negativity and low self-esteem as they focus more on their goals other than obstacles. Therefore, it is fundamental to note that coaches and sports people must collaborate in finding any mechanisms that could stimulate and uphold self-esteem since it is, directly and indirectly, impactful to their
You have to really love the sport to want to play and develop an understanding of it. All varieties of people enjoy the game because of how it makes them feel and the joy associated with playing. Bleeding, sweating and getting hurt are just the little things that someone learns while playing the game. The philosophy and emotions associated with the game makes it the favorite time your life. The qualities and lessons learned while on the court have assisted me comprehend many individuals and their struggles and gains. I believe basketball is more about teamwork and dedication. I personally play for my team and not myself. It doesn’t matter who is on my team. Their height, age, race, gender, size and skills don’t matter as long as the individual knows how to play together as a team. A good team is one who actually respects the members on the team and possess’ the motivation to go all the way. These teams have been known to become amazing teams. They are teams also known to go places and to win big titles. When people saw the growth of my team, I know that they saw that basketball is more than just a game. They knew that we wasn’t gone let nobody beat up unless we beat ourselves. Basketball is a part of my life no matter if I’m not playing. It’s always in my heart because of the love I have for the
