Dr. Dweck’s book Mindset focuses on her research on how a person’s beliefs help shape the success in their life. Each of us have a mindset that is either a growth mindset or a fixed mindset. Our mindset influences how we face challenges, bounce back from setbacks and our tendency to stereotype others.
A person with a fixed mindset believes that your qualities are given to you. Things like intelligence, talent, personality, and creativity are not developed through practice or learning. An example of a fixed mindset is believing that an athlete is a great athlete because they were born with those skills and ability different from others. The limitation of this mindset is that people quickly become defensive if they don’t do well or if they are corrected because they look for an excuse as to why it happened. This mindset is cultivated when parents, teachers, etc say things like “What can you do better next time?” or “What could you do to improve your race time?” It is focused on the student giving their best effort and focusing on what they can control to
grow. It is important to understand these mindsets as a leader and when working with others. If you are working with a person who has a fixed mindset you need to try and encourage them by looking at the world in a different way. Ask questions that make them think about how to strive to be better, but be careful to consider how they take criticism as perceived failure. Setting goals that are attainable and scaffolding their support will help keep them filling successful. People with a fixed mindset often don’t give their full potential, because they view challenges as a potential for failure. When dealing with staff that has the growth mindset you also need to remember that even if they achieved a goal, the growth mindset people are already setting a new goal and new steps to reach them. They are your risk takers and often push the envelope of what can be done. As a leader, the more you understand your staff and how they respond to outside influences the better you can work to reach them and carefully consider each mindset as you set and make goals for the staff.

It is hard for me to even condense the realizations that this book has made consider about my mindset and the mindsets of others. It has enlightened me to consider several situations and how the mindsets can steer outcomes in a certain direction. They can impact lives. Both educationally as a teacher (leader role), the mindsets of students, and the mindsets of interacting with others become a leading role in being able to provide an engaging and safe educational environment for all students.

As far as I could remember I was never really any good at school. I couldn’t concentrate on things for no more than 5 minutes at a time I would either get discouraged or find it too easy and just give up. An author by the name of Carol Dweck wrote an article called “Brainology” in it Dweck describes that there are two types of mindsets fixed and growth. Those who are afraid to fail so they never try anything new are ones with a fixed mindset and the growth mindset are those who are not afraid to fail and find a new challenge an opportunity to learn something new. There are many attitudes that form certain mindsets. Some of these mindsets can change how a person does and perceives things. Some mindsets that can do just that are Dweck’s example of a growth mindset and fixed mindsets. According to Dweck, a fixed mindset is one in where “.. students believe that intelligence is fixed..” and a fixed mindset is the “..believe that intelligence is a potential that can be realized through learning. As a result, confronting challenges, profiting from mistakes, and persevering in the face of setbacks become ways of getting smarter. Because people with growth mindsets can through setbacks, and find alternatives to better themselves; They turn to perseverance and hard work to achieve their goals.
In the reading “Mindset: How you can fulfil your potential” by (Dweck, 2012) Chapter One introduces the reader to the Fixed and Growth mindset, and identifies how basic qualities and intelligence can be improved by effort.

People with a fixed mindset are usually not motivated to do challenging work, apply very little effort, lose confidence after mistakes, and are intimidated when things get difficult. And I have experienced some of these situations. I get less motivated when I have more work, don’t try my best, and I put myself down after low grades. I lost confidence in myself after every setback, but I should of been looking to learn from them. I should actually look back and see what I could have done differently after a setback instead of degrading my own morale. For example, I could change the way I approach a test if I really messed up on the last one, or I can stay motivated at every task at hand.
