Chlorissa Kaufenberg Intro to Wellness Wellness Autobiography I consider myself to be a healthy person, however that can always be improved. In my life I believe I have taken appropriate steps to maintaining a pretty healthy life in many ways. I don’t drink, smoke, or do drugs. I choose healthy foods over junk foods. I live in an environment that promotes good health. I do whatever I can to avoid stressful situations. Finally, I try to exercise as much as I can. I have never smoked, drank or done any drugs and I don’t plan to. These sort of things can be detrimental to your health and I can’t imagine putting something in my body that does nothing but hurt. Anytime I wanted a snack or even during dinner or lunch, I would always have more than a serving of either fruits, vegetables, or both. My mother and father always encouraged this and that’s why it became so normal that even today they are a big part of my diet. Over the years I’ve developed several allergies to different kinds of fruits and vegetables so I’ve had to modify what kinds of fruit/vegetables I can eat and cannot. Nevertheless, it hasn’t stopped me from eating healthy. The common theme so far is that my parents have encouraged healthy habits from me. I’d say that I have great environmental wellness. Wellness provides the mind, body, feelings, and spiritual well-being individuals gain in their daily lifestyle. When most individuals in society hear the phrase wellness they assume it is referring to physical wellness. Which is true, but did society know that physical wellness is part of the seven wellnesses that are broken down into extension? Which are known for physical, emotional, intellectual, social, spiritual, environmental, and occupational wellnesses. These seven wellnesses help provide ways for individual to do daily and guide individuals to maintain a good health from inside and out.
For years, I have been eating what I want. Food choices are a significant factor that affects our health. What we like or crave, often, is the determining variable in what we eat. Finding the right balance of food choices is the key factor in improving our health benefits. Choosing nutrient-dense foods will provide more nutritional value than foods that are found to be low in nutrient density. Making the right choices in foods, however, is extremely difficult. What is wellness? “Wellness is an active process of becoming aware of and making choices toward a healthy life. Wellness is also a process for change and growth” (Health Topic – What is wellness?). To have acceptable wellness you should have an equal amount of social, emotional/mental, and physical health. I, myself, believe that I have an okay wellness, I mean not like full wellness but just enough to pass I'll say. But how am I living in wellness?
I spent a lot of time wondering how to be healthy when I was obese. I wondered why my siblings were normal and thin. I wondered why I was different and fat. I wondered ‘What am I doing wrong? How can I be healthy?’
Physical health is one aspect of life that most individuals take for granted. Most people assume that our health will always be there or if one becomes sick they will be able to recover their health with the new medical advances that are always happening around the world. However, this is not always the case some individuals have to face a chronic lack of health and deal with the implications of this on their life. The loss of health I will be talking about today is not a direct loss of personal health but a loss of health that my father experiences and all the different components that affect my family and I’s life because of it.
With the wellness areas are generally highly practiced by the teachers, it can be inferred that they have good wellness conditions. Furthermore, this implies that the teachers have quality life. Hence, according to Powers and Dodd (2003), the efficacy of wellness practices for an optimal quality of life necessitates a balance of the physical, intellectual, emotional, social, spiritual, and occupational dimensions of our lives.
Physical, emotional, intellectual, interpersonal, spiritual, and environmental wellness are all considered the six dimensions of wellness with occupational wellness being the possible seventh. But what are these exactly? And how do they apply to me and my health and wellness?
What it means to be healthy are the ways in which you treat your body positively. This would include emotional, physical, mentally, socially and the foods you consume on a daily basis. In those aspects it would mean to keep your body in good shape, keep yourself emotionally and mentally stable, and having a good relationship with not only the people around you but with yourself. Being healthy to me does not mean that you do not have a disease because, there are people who have diseases but are healthier than some of us who do not have a disease. Being healthy means to give your body the proper nutrition it needs and not stuffing it with processed and unhealthy foods.
When thinking of my overall health, a few aspects stand out that I think I could definitely improve on. When I think my current personal wellness I think it is fairly decent. There are definitely people out there far worse than myself. It could be better because there is always room for improvement. I’m a big fan of personal growth. To me if a person decides to stop growing or wanting to better themselves either mentally, physically or emotiontally. Then whats the real purpose for living? I am a fairly active person. I love to hike, stay fit and eat healthy. Living a healthy lifestyle isn’t hard for me which I think definitely contributes to a wellness.
If one wants to live an enjoyable, fulfilling life they must know what it truly means to be well. Living a wellness lifestyle means incorporating all aspects of what it takes to flourish as a human being. It goes beyond the health of the physical body and incorporates the important social, emotional, and spiritual factors that play a part in every person’s life in one way or another. Knowing how to act correctly, control our feelings, channel our frustrations, and improve in each dimension of wellness will lead to a satisfactory life. Spiritual, physical, emotional, nutritional, and social wellness define the biggest components of life and thriving in them is vital.
As a health and wellness blogger, I'm always trying to provide great information for my audience. I want to be an authority that my readers can trust. According to the text, wellness is defined as an "integrated and dynamic level of functioning oriented toward maximizing potential, dependent on self-responsibility." It involves both preventive health behaviors and a shift in thinking and attitude. Wellness is a lifelong promise to oneself of growth and achievement in each of the seven dimensions: emotional, spiritual, physical, occupational, intellectual, environmental, and social. It means a lifetime of ongoing change and always striving toward higher levels healthy and successful living. This means, ultimately, that one must live a life that caters to each of those dimensions both individually and collectively. Not living a healthy lifestyle, can have damaging effects on both health and life, and not only yours but the people that are around you. An unhealthy lifestyle means more illness and more expenses to treat those illnesses. This means a bigger burden on an already challenged and over-budgeted healthcare system. Poor health also means more time lost at work, less quality recreational time, and shorter lifespans. Not to mention, the onset of major chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cancer.
Adding exercises into one’s daily routines can change their whole lifestyle. Many people look at exercise as being something just for people who want to lose weight or to become muscle bound, but there are a great deal of benefits that can be received from exercising regularly. Of course gaining muscle and losing fat are the two most popular reasons that usually attract people to the gym, but they make up a small part of the potential benefits that can be achieved with exercise. There are several ways in which I have benefited in my life from exercising regularly, besides just making me bigger and stronger. It has made me become more organized, helped me make better decisions, and motivated me to take on new challenges in life.
