The two articles share information’s that will benefit us college students. Challenging our self and willing to learning will benefit us in the long run. Having a positive mindset and willing to push yourself you will succeed. Everyone use there vocabulary differently, some use it to express themselves. As Ken states “We use vocabulary to interpret and express ourselves.” He also explained that “prisoners may have even resorted to violence because it was their only effective way of expressing their feelings.” (Ken 1) Instead of anger and aggression, learn new vocabulary to express your feeling. As Carol said “Students stop working when school become challenging” “negative effect on student’s mindset, harming their motivation to learn.” (Carol 2) It’s very true because I feel like giving up when it gets harder in school. I lose focus and I’ll tell myself I don’t understand and lose interest. Some student who consider themselves to be fixed mindset tend to believe they are not up to task and will mistake. For student with growth mindset, they are willing to learn more and to challenge themselves. Basically, Ziglar is emphasizing how learning can be accomplished, only if you put your mind to it. In “Learning (Your First Job),” Dr. Robert Leamnson shares his strong belief of beginning students entering the post-secondary education. Leamnnson discusses the many ways of learning that can be used in college, such as studying, notes, assignments, and exams. Leamnson continuously discusses how no one will learn unless they want to. Learning is a biological process that relies on the brain. Just like how our bodies need maintenance, the brain does too. College is a place where you learn things that help you later. Leamnson mentions how students are responsible for succeeding in college not by just showing up, but by putting in effort towards the classes they are taking. In order to succeed in the learning of the post-secondary education process, students should be aware of how to make notes, understand what they are studying, and take assignments seriously.
It was not until I read Carol S. Dweck’s “Brainology” that I realized I had a fixed mindset. I care more about getting a 4.0 than actually understanding what I am being taught and I also hate struggling. These habits are part of having a fixed mindset. It was after reading this article that I discovered I could change my mindset and be successful. Having a fixed mindset means that you believe that you and others only have a certain amount of intelligence. A growth mindset on the other hand, is believing that everyone has the ability to reach a higher level of intelligence through effort and hardwork.
“There is no elevator to success, you have to take the stairs,” was said by motivational speaker and American author Zig Ziglar. This relates to Carol S. Dweck’s article “Brainology” and Sherman Alexie’s essay “Superman and Me.” Ziglar, Dweck, and Alexie all feel that it isn’t easy for someone to become successful. It takes hard work, perseverance, and the want to learn and grow. In Dweck’s article, she stated that someone with a growth mindset would become more successful and knowledgeable than someone with a fixed mindset, which was demonstrated by Alexie in his essay, and by a personal experience of my own.

This article examines how beliefs about how you learn impact the manner in which you learn. It is stated that growth mind-set as opposed to fixed mind-set promotes student success and achievement. Growth mind-set is the idea that intelligence is not something individuals are born with, but is rather a skill that individuals can develop through hard work and perseverance. Fixed mind-set opposes this idea as it views intelligence as an immutable trait individuals are born with. These students come in with a fixed mindset in what it will be a class about just reading and writing on boring topics and that they will neither understand the readings or develop a well-written paper. Yet, there are those that see it as a way of being introduced to new material and hearing the different point of views from peers and instructor. What can harness the development of a growth mindset in a class? Well for starters we can start Dweck recommends taking careful consideration of the words given to the students (p.4). Teachers who work with English Language Learners know that academic language takes longer to achieve proficiency in than does conversational language. On average, ELL students need at least two years to achieve conversational language and, five to nine years to develop academic language proficiency. Many English words ELL students are exposed to in school, they have not yet learned or even heard in their first language, which makes transference of knowledge impossible. The vast differences in the ability to use conversational versus academic language can be a hindrance to these students and have lasting effects on their academics and therefore, their lives.

As far as I can remember, I was never really any good at school. I couldn’t concentrate on things for no more than 5 minutes at a time, I would either get discouraged or find it too easy and just give up. An author by the name of Carol Dweck wrote an article called “Brainology”. In it, Dweck describes that there are two types of mindsets: fixed and growth. Those who are afraid to fail so they never try anything new are those with a fixed mindset and the growth mindset are those who are not afraid to fail and find a new challenge, an opportunity to learn something new.

Have you ever thought about yourself if you are in the fixed or a growth mindset? A fixed mindset person is someone who overcomes obstacles, works hard, and failure does not stop them. On the other hand a person who is in the fixed mindset is someone who is non challenge, gives up, or thinks that success is abuse. In a book called “Mindset The New Psychology of Success” the author Carol S. Dweck talks about different ways we can convert ourselves from a fixed mindset to a growth mindset and the author also talks about the qualities of the growth and fixed mindsets. In a movie“Freedom Writers” the author Erin Gruwell shows us how she was a growth minded teacher but her students were in the fixed minded group. Throughout the school year the students had a fixed mindset but as time went by the students somehow their mindsets into the growth mindset. Freedom writers illustrates the fixed mindsets of the teacher and students and a growth minded teacher who changed everything.

The thought of not being exceptional enough, smart enough, having all these expectations and standards, the feeling of failing, being stressed, not being able to fix a problem, ruining self-esteem, staying up all night studying just to fail, and no longer being motivated is taking a toll on students.
