I think the advancement of personalized learning is most important. I am a tutor for geometry support students at my school and I have first-hand experience in knowing just how differently each and every one of them learns. I have had students who worked well-incorporating algebra and others who worked well with shape tiles to help guide them in their worksheets. These students are by no means unintelligent, but they do have varied styles and preferences in learning that isn’t as supported in their regular classes.

As far as I can remember, I was never really any good at school. I couldn’t concentrate on things for no more than 5 minutes at a time, I would either get discouraged or find it too easy and just give up. An author by the name of Carol Dweck wrote an article called “Brainology”. In it, Dweck describes that there are two types of mindsets: fixed and growth. Those who are afraid to fail so they never try anything new are those with a fixed mindset and the growth mindset are those who are not afraid to fail and find a new challenge, an opportunity to learn something new.

The realm of education tends to shine a negative light on younger generations labeling them as menace to society and ultimately excluding them without fair opportunity. Every child is different; some may require more attention from teachers than others. Schools tend to forget this unique characteristic of human life once standardized testing and grading comes into the equation.

Second, end overcrowded classes, as population grows the demand of building more schools grow with it. In average, we should have six-hundred to eight-hundred students in each school. Nevertheless, some schools now have over one-thousand students, which make it very difficult inside the class room. In a big city like Raleigh the number of students is very large, and that leads to so many problems like making around year school, which have a negative impact on the students. My basic principle is preparing my students to face different challenges in life, particularly if they choose to contribute to lead the community where they live. For various reasons, students take my class. Often, the course is required for their major or for a job application, e.g. for those who are future high school teachers. Others take it because they are interested in some topics, e.g. students interested in world politics enroll in international relations course. Regardless of their motivation, my objective is to ensure that students acquire knowledge and set of skills that prepare them to face various challenges in their occupation.
At the beginning of one’s journey of gaining more knowledge, most children don’t mind school, for it is a change of environment for them. The majority of elementary school adolescents even enjoy school to some degree. As time wears on, we usually, and sadly, begin to see a change of heart. Children become fatigued from school and therefore don’t take pleasure in going anymore. Maybe their teachers didn’t teach them in the way that they learn most efficiently, or maybe students just become bored with the whole “school scene” itself. Whatever the case, it is apparent that by the time they reach high school, their interest for learning alone has died out.
