How does an art student’s visual arts portfolio affect them when applying to art school? To us the prospective students, it has the greatest of all effects. For it will determine what our future will be like for us as an artist. To have a memorable, well organized, and thoughtful portfolio will mean the difference between rejection and acceptance into any accredited art school that we apply to. First, let’s think of this. What does it mean to have a memorable portfolio? Well, a portfolio that is memorable is one that easily demonstrates the capability and personal experiences of the artist while showcasing the medium they wish to specialize in. For instance, I prefer to work with muted soft layered watercolors, bold black lined inked drawings, …show more content…
As it can also be the difference between acceptance and rejection from the art school that you are wanting to attend. A student that shows great effort and commitment to this is the one that will have the best chance of being accepted. So in the best of hopes of being organized, I placed my portfolio into groups of three. A beginning, middle, and end. This is much like that of a good book. As the portfolio is meant to tell the story of the artist and intrigue the viewer as it progresses. I don’t want for the person viewing my portfolio to open it and go, “Oh that’s pretty but, looks bland and unbalanced. Is this all they are going to show in their portfolio?” That would be just awful. They are viewing the work that took hours upon hours to do as being lesser than the ones prior. They may even be questioning your ability with the first turn of the page. All the effort that you have put in would have been for nothing at this point. So, in hopes of preventing this, I decided to start it all off with a bang. I put a colorful eye-catcher right in the first-page slot. Something that I’m extremely proud of and I view as my best work up to that date. This is much better that what came before. Doing this in the middle and the end will make it appear twice as organized and maintain the viewer's interest. These two pieces will need to reflect the first piece as
that they thus may "get into it" more and begin to experience some of the
This year we have been studying natural forms, this has involved using many new and different materials and techniques.
There are things in life which have an impact on us, an event, a place, movie, a person and many other experiences influence our thoughts and emotions. People also feel touched by things they read. There are books which make you cry or keep you in tension all these things are considered memorable.
The attempt to base a standard for assessing the value of works of art upon sentiment (the feeling of pleasure or displeasure) was famously made by David Hume in his essay "Of the Standard of Taste." Hume's attempt is generally regarded as fundamentally important in the project of explaining the nature of value judgements in the arts by means of an empirical, rather than a priori, relation. Recently, Hume's argument has been strongly criticized by Malcolm Budd in his book Values of Art. Budd contends that Hume utterly fails to show how any given value judgement in the arts can be more warranted or appropriate than any other if aesthetic judgements are determined by sentiment. This is a remarkable charge, since Hume explicitly sets out to introduce an aesthetic standard for "confirming one sentiment and condemning another." I examine Budd's arguments and conclude that Hume's position-and the empiricist tradition that it inaugurated-can withstand them.
While Still life with Apples and a Pot of Primroses by Paul Cézanne and Still Life with a Skull and a Writing Quill by Pieter Claesz vary in time period, and therefore style and composition, the message they portray is similar. Cezanne and Claesz differ greatly in technique, more specifically in perspective, brush stroke, composition and realism. Their separation in time does account for the discrepancies in technique but surprisingly does not affect the subject and message.
In this essay, I will be covering Tim O'Brien's The Things They Carried (1990) using two different prompts. The first topic I will be covering is how Tim O'Brien communicates the concept of carrying in the story, and how this recurring theme helps to explain the psychological and physical burdens the characters may carry with them. He goes over the shame, guilt, hurt, and burdens the soldiers at battle carried while at war. In The Things They Carried, O'Brien conveys the toll that war takes on the human mind, body, and world. O'Brien uses the concept of carrying something to exemplify the physical but also mental effects of everything happening around the characters in this story.
The final portfolio is, in a sense, my final performance. It demonstrates the ablities I have gained in continuously practicing certain writing habits. Just as I worked to improve certain aspects of my music which demand my focus, I worked to gain vital abilities for my writing. As I "sit on the stage" and play my piece to demonstrate what I have accomplished in my music, this portfolio functions as an example of what I have accomplished in my writing this quarter in English 131
Art is something that has been around since humans have roamed the earth. It has been created by millions of different people, and has been influenced by many things. One incredibly big influence on art has been religion. Artists usually create work to express feelings and convey different meanings. It is no surprise that religion plays a significant role in this creation.
Many ancient works of art represent political functions with different types of monuments and massive works of architecture. The political functions of ancient culture did have works of art. For instance, artistic styles, particularly in sculpture and painting, remained highly consistent with the ancient culture for many years. This consistency of architecture indicates levels of cultural and political stability that was strong enough to resist sudden changes in ancient cultures. Having the ability to build monumental structures indicates that ancient rulers were wealthy and powerful enough to mobilize the political structures, as well.
The focus of my folio for his year was to capture a sense of wonder and curiosity. During unit 3 I began by exploring different mediums to get a feel for the different attributes they bring to a piece. However, I found that though how art was completed is important, the what is more significant. I wanted to tell some sort of story, either one of my own or one that had significantly impacted my life in some form, particularly through childhood. I also aimed to emphasise contrast and symbolism with a touch of dark context.
The portfolio is a magnificent object. The portfolio allows its viewer a snapshot of the creator. The portfolio for the artist is almost as important as a résumé. The portfolio is an essential tool for any student interested in a career in visual arts due to its power of truth and persuasion. The portfolio allows admissions officers to assess the applicants on both technique
My essay is going to be a discussion on whether fine art, fashion and designers are linked with each other. On starting my essay I looked up the definition of Fine art, the term is used to distinguish the variation of creative art forms, developed by humans. Some of the many concepts which fall under this category are painting, drawing, calligraphy, sculpture etc. I agree that fine art uses lots of visually appealing methods which seem graceful, like calligraphy the work produced is quite delicate and pretty. The area in fine art which I seek to specialise in is fashion it’s an expression in today’s society which defines the popular trends and style within clothes, foot wear and accessories. I feel that many designers of today create outfits, as a way of expressing their difficult to understand innovations. Artists and designers are arguably alike due to using similar creative techniques, and media to plan and craft their masterpiece. Art has always been a main influence in fashion, without fine art the majority of the vast selection of patterns and clothes wouldn’t have existed in the past or even the present day. Take Yves Saint Laurent’s Mondrian dress, created in 1965. Yves Saint Laurent was inspired by the 1920s abstract geometric pattern painting of Piet Mondrian work. Yves Saint Laurent realised during the 1960s that the simplicity and the flat planes, were ideal for the developing sack dress. Later on Yves Saint Laurent’s dress was replicated many times due to being so popular. As shown by Yves Saint Laurent, The patterns on dresses and other fabric weren’t an accident made by the designer who created them. But in fact inspirations from artists work. I believe that fashion is built upon art and culture of an entire era, si...
The Creative Arts play a significant role in early childhood education as it provides children with a diverse range of skills to enhance their learning and development to meet the needs of succeeding in the 21st century. The focus of this essay is to emphasise the value of Creative Arts in early childhood education by providing a summary of the concepts and skills of the Creative Arts and the four strands; Dance, Drama, Music and Visual Arts. Then, ascertain how Creative Arts benefit children’s social development, language and
In the art community there is a lot of controversy in distinguishing what the difference between an artist and a designer. Designers are told they are not artist and they need to stop thinking they are artist. When dealing with art and design specific demographics and viewers interpret the messages of each subject in different ways. Art is said to be elucidated and design is said to be understood. Artists usually develop a work of art with the intention of bringing an emotion viewpoint, instinctive feeling, and or state of mind. When you look at an artist work it cannot be limited to just exhibiting one individual thought or just one individual meaning. That is a big difference when it comes to graphic design. Graphic design usually has a very specific goal and point to make. When dealing with graphic design there should not be any room or space for any mixed messages or multiple meanings. The audience of the design should immediately understand the design that the designer created. Art connects to people differently in so many ways. The only reason it connects to people in different ways is only because it is interpreted differently.
“Art washes from the soul the dust of everyday life” (Picasso). These words about the fine arts describe not only life in general, but also apply to everyday life of public school students. Many students need something to divert their attention away from jaded academics that cause them stress and mental deterioration. Fine arts are the solution to that problem; unlike academics and athletics, they provide an outlet for students to be creative and discover their talents without the pressure other courses produce. Additionally, the arts stimulate the brain, and generally promote positive brain activity and development in teenagers. So, if fine arts positively affect students, then why are they so
