Art is something that has been around since humans have roamed the earth. It has been created by millions of different people, and has been influenced by many things. One incredibly big influence on art has been religion. Artists usually create work to express feelings and convey different meanings. It is no surprise that religion plays a significant role in this creation. When I think of art being associated with religion, the first thing that comes to mind is symbolism. Symbols are a very important thing in different religions. For example, in Hinduism and Buddhism, mandalas are used as a meditation tool and they symbolize the cosmos. These beautiful creations are symmetric arrangements of circles or concentric shapes. They are often seen as carpet designs, mosaics, and henna tattoos. People have started to realize their beauty more and more recently, but many don’t know that they stem from a religious belief. Another example is within Christianity. Christians use the symbol of the cross extensively in art. There have been many sculptures of crosses or Jesus on the cross made by artists since the beginning of Christianity. Even some Christian churches are in the shape of crosses to reiterate this symbolism. An example of a church like this is the infamous Westminster Abbey. Another way to describe this symbolism is iconography. Iconography in art is basically the repetition of certain images or ideas that are identified with something significant. These icons help someone to identify what the work is associated with. An example of this in Buddhist art is the depiction of buddhas or bodhisattvas. A buddha is a being who has reached enlightenment and a bodhisattva is a being who has reached enlightenment but chooses to stay in ... ... middle of paper ... ...ures. This can be pretty controversial at times depending on how people interpret the bible. Many Christians feel that it is going against the word of God to get a tattoo while others feel that it is a way to proudly voice your beliefs. In Hinduism, henna tattoos are very symbolic. They are traditionally created on the hands of Hindu brides. The process is meant to be a moving experience. Each symbol has a specific meaning and can represent things such as beauty, happiness and rebirth. These tattoos are only temporary but they still have a significant meaning. Religious art is all around us. It makes the world a beautiful place. Art creates a deeper meaning behind the stories of our religions. It allows us to express anything we want, religious or not. I think art allows us to understand our world a little easier. It explains things that cannot be put into words.
In conclusion we can say that Christian art was influenced by the rise of the Christianity in different historical periods. Each period is associated by a certain style, which characterizes the very differences from each other. On the other hand the Christianity itself was portrayed through art, was the new development of art that gave birth to new developments in the church itself. This balance of powers between art and Christianity is the essence of human spirituality.
We read in Genisis1:31 that “God saw everything that he had made, and behold, it was very good”. The arts are good because they were created by Him. The bible says delight in His creation is good and instruction us to agree. God has inspired the arts, if you read through the Bible you will find segments of poems printed in the Bible, the book inspired by the words of our heavenly father. “We are created in the image of a creative God, and part of our nature is to praise him by letting loose our own creativity” (Thomas ).
All types of art have been around for many years, starting from 10,000 B.C. The meaning of art is a way for someone to express feelings, thoughts and sometimes used for entertainment. The oldest forms of art were commonly recognized in the form of drawings, paintings and sculptures. There have been discoveries of drawings in caves from the ice age era and inscriptions and paintings of legends in pyramids in Egypt. Other forms of art came with the discovery of music and plays. It wasn’t until later that another form of art came into the making from Europe. This form of art was known as magic lanterns, which was a number of various images placed in front of a light or flame. The light would cast a shadow of the image for the use of entertainment. After the invention of the camera a man named Eadweard put together an experiment to place 12 cameras around a horse race track. The cameras were placed at different locations closely together and snapped pictures as the horses ran by. The results were twelve different photos in sequence and by quickly moving the photographs it appeared like the horse was running. This was called motion photography. Like the magic lantern, the motion photography had the same concept when the images were projected on a large screen for an audience, thus, bringing us our first movies. Movies became a form of art because like a play, movies were a way for someone to express passion, love, humor and mystery for entertainment.
The first thing made clear in Art and the Bible is the Lordship of Christ regarding man. The Bible makes four things very clear: God made the whole man; in Christ the whole man is redeemed; Christ is the Lord of the whole Christina life; and when Christ comes back men will be raised from the dead and the whole man will have whole redemption. Under this framework is how art in the Christian life is understood. Art does have a place in Christian life, a Christian should use the arts to the Glory of God—not just as a tract, but as things of beauty to the praise of God. Without the framework then art would be seen as ungodly.
Have you ever wondered, why do Judaism, Christianity, and Islam use and incorporate art in their faith? Judaism, Christianity, and Islam use and incorporate the art of music. Music is an essential type of art, that was used as a religious role. Also, music was a sin, it was a forbidden pleasure.
Being fascinated as a child about the ancient world, it is no wonder that as an adult, the comparing and contrasting of world religions is very fascinating to me. The origins of such legends and stories, passed down from generation to generation, morphing over time and spreading it 's narrative through the context of it 's message. Religious art was the basis for the majority of subject matter up until modern times, only as recently as the 19th century did artistic themes begin to completely exclude creation myths, and the legends of, or faith in Gods, Goddesses, or divine beings. In the evolution of both substance and the motives for the production of artwork, Religious viewpoints in both the Renaissance and Romantic artistic periods allowed
When the religious art leaks out of the religious community and into the broader world of culture, it is one of the ways the meaning of the art can evolve. This is also an opportunity for the art to draw the world to religion. Moreover, artistic reinterpretation of sacred imagery can help keep religion honest. The church has always been enriched by the tension that comes with diversity in art. Art is communication and effective art communicates effectively to any group at any level.
In the world have religion, art and culture in different cultures around the world each that defines us on who we are and why we do it. Like in art there are people who are artists and like to inspire themselves so that they can create the most wonderful art they can. Most of the artists use their emotions when they create art so that they can a wonderful meaning to it in the picture. They also portray a message in their painting so it leaves the person thinking what is the painting trying to say. There is also a goddess that became well known through a video and the goddess name is Santoshi Ma. People have been worshiping her more and more and the goddess has taken the temples of previous goddesses. There is also calligraphy which people think
Art can mean a lot of things for example music, poems and pictures. You could all 3 examples that I used to teach students in schools. The importance of art is that art never ages. Some old paintings are really famous for the way the painter drew them or the history behind it. We also learn a lot from poems when we study them in schools. Different types of art help different students learn and make the student think different ways than usual.
The two are intertwined in a way that they can’t be studied as they deserve without the other. One religion that has hurch, most notably Christian churches, were patrons of the arts and commissioned thousands of notable works to be done by artists that depicted scenes from the Bible. Works of art such as The Last Supper, Christ Crucified, and many more. Artists were able to develop new style techniques and capture scenes in different styles from baroque to realism. Religion helped many artists and was successful in making art a predominant factor of our society as without their help of requesting art depicting the Bible, men and women would have never gotten the idea of requesting portraits made that developed into the beautiful world of the fine arts. Religion not only helped the arts, but the arts brought beauty and life to the most scared book for the Christians. People could in the past and still today, go to church and witness scenes depicted straight out of the bible as well as look at beautifully done stain glass that depicted religious symbols such as the cross. Unfortunately, the two do no always work together to enlighten people and show them more objective forms of knowledge. Art can some times be sacrilegious and be a mockery of the church as well as religion can also defy art and call it ungodly. As well as some other religions, besides Christianity, do not allow art to be placed in the church as it can be seen as ungodly. In wester society though, religion and church have formed a close bond as many of the classic paintings and statues are depictions from the Bible. Without art and religion being so closely in touch, the two areas of knowledge would have never been able to develop into the cultural and historical knowledge centers that they are
The concept of God being found and described in art is a very interesting concept. God can be much easier understood and explained by the concepts of art. This is not a common idea, although it actually makes a lot of sense. In Joseph Kupfer’s essay The Art of Religious Communication he discusses his ideas of God in relation to art. His essay discusses all of the different ways in which God can often be looked at through art in a much more realistic way. Often in the world of art things can be explained in ways that other things cannot be. In Kupfer’s essay, he explains God’s existence and transcendence, as being something only understood though art. Art has a way of explaining things that science and logic cannot.
Personally, my culture did not play a big role when I was in the midst
In the art community there is a lot of controversy in distinguishing what the difference between an artist and a designer. Designers are told they are not artist and they need to stop thinking they are artist. When dealing with art and design specific demographics and viewers interpret the messages of each subject in different ways. Art is said to be elucidated and design is said to be understood. Artists usually develop a work of art with the intention of bringing an emotion viewpoint, instinctive feeling, and or state of mind. When you look at an artist work it cannot be limited to just exhibiting one individual thought or just one individual meaning. That is a big difference when it comes to graphic design. Graphic design usually has a very specific goal and point to make. When dealing with graphic design there should not be any room or space for any mixed messages or multiple meanings. The audience of the design should immediately understand the design that the designer created. Art connects to people differently in so many ways. The only reason it connects to people in different ways is only because it is interpreted differently.
“Art washes from the soul the dust of everyday life” (Picasso). These words about the fine arts describe not only life in general, but also apply to everyday life of public school students. Many students need something to divert their attention away from jaded academics that cause them stress and mental deterioration. Fine arts are the solution to that problem; unlike academics and athletics, they provide an outlet for students to be creative and discover their talents without the pressure other courses produce. Additionally, the arts stimulate the brain, and generally promote positive brain activity and development in teenagers. So, if fine arts positively affect students, then why are they so
