Surprisingly small compared to other works, “Astronomer by Candlelight” by Gerrit Dou could be easily overlooked by a casual stroller. However, as I approached it to have a closer look, other paintings quickly lost interest for me. The closer I got, the more detail appeared; the scene came alive with the play of light and dark. The astronomer, eternally still, pulsed with life, pondering over his books. Within a foot of the painting I began to feel as though I was looking through a keyhole into his study. Indeed, Dou's work and all its facets becomes an emblem for "the inquiry of truth, which is the lovemaking, or the wooing of it... [as] the sovereign good of human nature" as eloquently stated by Francis Bacon in "Of Truth." Made in the 1950's, the painting stands as a prominent example of Gerrit Dou's technique.
“This morning I saw the countryside from my window a long time before sunrise, with nothing but the morning star, which looked very big,” wrote van Gogh to his brother Theo. This letter was used when he was describing his inspiration for one of his best-known paintings, The Starry Night which was created in 1889. The window that he refers to was in the Saint-Paul asylum in Saint-Rémy, in southern France, where he tried to relax away from his emotional suffering while he kept making art.
1.Van Gogh attended a boarding school in Zevenbergen from when he was ten to twelve.
Many people may look at the same painting and all come away with their own understanding. Every person has their bias and preconceptions that will influence their personal experience. In this paper we will discuss how Anne Sexton described in a short poem her experience of viewing Vincent Van Gogh’s painting The Starry Night. We will observe how Anne Sexton’s poem based on Van Gogh’s painting speaks about death in darkness as the painting seems to emphasise the light in the darkness.
The life span of 37 years saw Vincent Willem van Gogh (Vincent) in creating beautiful works he dearly loved. Painting was an avenue, which allowed him to express his inner thoughts or vent his struggles. My decision to research on Vincent’s painting, Starry Night (1889) came with the inspiration from Don Mclean’s Song, Starry Starry Night where his lyrics spoke about Vincent’s life that further intrigued me in writing this paper.
In conclusion, Van Gogh used the elements above to create a man by himself in a field. He used color to represent feeling rather than represent realism of an event. The cool colors represent the field and happiness in his work. The warm colors represent the harshness of the day and could be a metaphor for life. He used scale and proportion to emphasis the overbearing sun. He also used proportion and scale to represent literally and figuratively how far away home was. The linear perspective was only evident to me after I really studied the used of lines. I followed the lines to the horizon and left side of the painting.
This type of painting uses linseed oil as a binder in the paint. Oil paint is very slow at drying which allows the artist to come back the next day to make corrections to the painting without putting fresh paint on the canvas. Giving the artist more control over these types of paintings than others. Most of the artists that use oil paints use thin layers of what is called glaze to build up the color on the painting. Oil paintings also make it easier to add texture to the art work as well. In the Starry Night, Vincent Van Gogh uses oil paints to create this master piece. He also uses abstract which is where realistic things look unrealistic giving them different forms as well as colors. This painting was completed in 1889. The painting was the view that Van Gogh had outside of the window he worked out of when he was put into an
Vincent Van Gogh never gave up his style and insight in his early work compared to his later work. I will discuss the comparison of the Potato Eaters and Starry Night and even though there are obvious differences, the core of his passion and eccentricities can be seen.
I have told you some of the main details about the two art pieces (Starry Light and Mona Lisa). Now I'm going to tell you a little more about what was similar about these two men and how they have thoughts the same yet in addition altogether different. Vincent van Gogh uses a ton of shading and surface in his work. He uses what we find in reality to paint what he finds in painting. He uses such free disapproved of thoughts that turn out to be bold to the point that they would be so speaking to anybody despite the fact that it stranded out and distinctive now and again. Leonardo utilizes an indistinguishable thought from surfaces as did van Gogh by making the alive inclination. Making everything look extremely reasonable. The way these two specialists
This painting by Vincent Van Gogh is on display at the Art Institute of Chicago Museum, in the Impressionism exhibit. There are many things going on in this painting that catch the viewer’s eye. The first is the piece’s vibrant colors, light blues and browns, bright greens, and more. The brush strokes that are very visible and can easily be identified as very thick some might even say bold. The furniture, the objects, and the setting are easy to identify and are proportioned to each other. There is so much to see in this piece to attempt to explain in only a few simple sentences.
In this essay will be talking about and comparing between the traditional painting Starry night by Vincent Van Gogh and the digital movie poster for Midnight in Paris designed by the company Cardinal Communications USA. Starry Night is an artwork that was painted in 1889 in an asylum at Saint-Remy-de-Provience, France while the Midnight in Paris poster is digitally made somewhere in the USA by someone in that company sometime in 2010. While both these artworks are very different, they have some similarities.
The 20th Century American poet, Anne Sexton once said, “Poetry should be a shock to the senses. It should almost hurt.” Sexton displays this belief through her writing style and set of controversial themes, which unquestionably shocked critics at times. Many of Sexton’s poems reflect on her personal struggles with mental illness and her numerous encounters with suicidal feelings. Sexton became known as a confessional poet because of her autobiographical style of writing. The main themes of her poetry are depression and death. “Wanting to Die”, “The Truth the Dead Know”, “The Abortion”, and “The Starry Night”, are all examples of Sexton’s writing that portray her central poetic themes. Through the use of vivid visual imagery, especially natural
Nighthawks by Edward Hopper is one of my all-time favorite paintings. This painting is so loved and famous, that even if you haven’t seen the original, you’ve likely seen it referenced in many different media. The world is filled of versions of this painting in Lego, featuring old movie stars, with supplementary quotes added for entertainment. All of these tributes are done because of the way this painting has resonated with the people who have seen it. The beautiful composition and the many well used elements in this painting have always intrigued and interested me.
Starting with visual elements I saw lines, implied depth, and texture. I see lines by him using lines created by an edge. Each line is curved not straight but it works with the piece. By using this he creates the piece to make it whole. He uses many curved lines within the painting I don’t know if there is a straight line in the whole thing. The next element I saw was implied depth. Using linear perspective you can see the mountains but they look smaller than the rest of the piece. They are the vanishing point in the back making it look as if you can walk down and they will get closer and closer to you. The last element that I saw was texture. They talk about Van Gogh’s painting, The Starry Night having texture through a two- dimensional surface, in which this painting has that similar feel. Van Gogh uses thick brush stokes on his paintings to show his feelings. There is actually a name for this called, Impasto,
This was in the second room that I looked in. It was surrounded by other paintings similar but not in the countryside. This picture depicts a normal fall day out in the country. The gravel road is long and hilly, while the corn on the right has been growing really tall. It looks as if it is almost harvest time because the corn in turning yellow and drying out. On the left side of the road there are telephone poles. These are very common out in the country, and very much appreciated when needing to call. Even further to the left is a bean field that is not ready to be picked but is getting close. In this picture the sun looks like it is the early morning and the sun is starting to come up. The shadows that the corn makes on the road reminds me of my home. I live out in the country and this painting looks like what my drive is to school is. It seems as though Gary Bowling, the painter, came out to my house to paint this picture. He painted this in January
