Video games have many different genres. One must understand that there are different types of video games, in order to understand the effects of them. Each genre of video game will affect each person differently. However, before diving into the world of video games, a question must be asked, which is: what exactly are video games? Video games to some people are, “ any kind of digital, interactive experience, primarily emphasized through visual means.” (DocSeuss) Phrasing it lightly, a video game is game that is digital and is experienced through “interactive means.” The person is being engaged in the game. Of course there are many different type of games. For example, there are puzzle games that will, “appeal to those who love to solve difficult …show more content…
One extreme example of the negative effects video games is that people who play them are “associated with a higher risk for seizures than those who do not,” (Nall). Seizures are very serious and should be treated with caution. Perhaps a more in depth study would give more insight into the matter. The solution is moderation. Some people that play video games will skip “physical activity in favor of hours spent playing video games can contribute to obesity in children,” (Nall). Obesity in extreme cases can increase. By, “Being overweight increases a child's risk of developing type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and other health concerns.” (Nall). Diabetes is a serious condition, and if not treated correctly, can result in death. People have to remember to take care of themselves. It does not help that people spend hours on end playing video games; they do not get the necessary exercise a person needs by sitting in front of a game playing with a hand held controller, which involves literally no exercise at all. If it was just a video game that made one move then that would be a different story. By playing too many video games one can also experience, “nerve compression and numbness in hands, elbows and shoulders.” (Arshi) Playing video games too long in an excessive amount of time can damage a person’s body in many different ways. If there is not moderation involved the damage can sometimes be permanent. Moderation is key when playing video games. By playing too much, one can experience long term negative physical effects. It is okay that there are negative effects of video games because there are positive effects that counteract the negative effects, also having moderation counteracts the negative
An examination of videogames in popular culture is a complicated one. There is a large debate as to what is the very first video game. The supposed earliest known video game was created by Thomas T. Goldsmith Jr. and Estle Ray Mann on a cathode ray tube in 1947. The game was a missile simulator similar to radar displays from World War II, and overlaid sheets of paper were used for targets since graphics were unknown at this time. On May 5, 1951, the NIMROD computer was presented in Britain. It used a panel of lights for its display and was used to play a game called “NIM”. Later, in 1952, Alexander S. Douglas made the first compu...
A child who is obese is automatically more likely to be exposed to a variety of health hazards throughout his or her life. It is estimated that “15 percent of children between six and nineteen suffer from obesity” (Lee and Sprague). A person who is deemed obese, is someone who has “a body fat percentage of more than 25 percent in boys and 32 percent in girls” (Lee and Sprague). Being severely overweight exposes you to more diseases than someone who is not overweight. Obese people “are more likely to develop type 2 diabetes . . . [from] being overweight” (Lee and Sprague). Some health issues, such as hypertension, heart attacks, and cancer can be obtained from being obese. There is also a great risk of “heart disease, stroke, diabetes, cancer and other chronic illnesses” when you are obese (“Hope”). high cholesterol as well as high blood pressure. Being obes...
Video games have become a hot topic recently. There have been a lot of controversy over whether to play or not to play. The controversy is due to them being arguably more captivating than all other forms of entertainment. Video games narrate an epic tale like no other form of entertainment can. You can become immersed in video games, because of this they are both a highly entertaining escape from the real world and a complete waste of time.
When you think of children playing video games you probably think of a child sitting in front of a TV or monitor for hours on end. This is not the case with a lot of games. Now while there may be a fair amount of children who do this there are a lot who know how to moderate their gaming and exercise. Some medical professionals have actually recommend patients to play video games as part of their treatment.
Video games are a valuable part of the world today. They feed the minds of the creative and provoke the minds of the less creative. Violence, immersion, and an unusual setting are all qualities of a game that create an intense and memorable experience for the player. By demonstrating and improving upon the three qualities that were deemed necessary to create a good game, video games could amount to astonishing heights in the future and bring something new to the table that could surprise us all.
Another reason that video games are bad for children is because it can cause injuries towards the person physically as well as mentally. It can cause auditory hallucinations, enuresis, encopresis, wrist pain, neck pain, elbow pain, tenosynovitis, hand arm vibration syndrome, repetitive strain injuries, peripheral neuropathy, and even obesity (NCBI. US. National Library of Medicine). Tests have shown that as you get older the more video games you play the less ability you have to multitask while playing games. As well as not being able to multitask, video games distract players from the sensation of pain, so in theory a child could have a severe injury and not even know about it which could cause the...
Even though playing video games can sometimes be educational; it causes laziness. Instead of children reading a book, or going outside to play, they would rather stay in the house and play video games. This is what causes some kids to be obese because not all games involve physical activity. Some kids get use to playing video games and actually don’t have any time to go outside, or any physical activity at all because they get so accustomed to playing video games and being in the house all day.
Studies have shown that there is a wide variety of physical and behavioral effects that video games can have on their players.
There are many positive effects to censoring violent video games, but one that has the most impact on the whole controversial issue is health. Health is greatly affected when playing indoors. Young children are obligated to go outside and get active with their body, getting in shape, and obtaining the fresh air and sunlight they need. In the article (The Positive and Negative Effects of Video Games) it is stated that the health of those plaing video games can be effected in many ways, “...Obesity, video induced seizures, and postural, muscular and skeletal disorders, such as tendonitis, nerve compressoin.” Having kids go outside (rather than video games) and have them play sports such as basketball, baseball, etc… will help their lungs develop, sames goes for their body structure. This will have a positive impact on their lives and how they grow up. Eyesight is another factor of health that is also affected by being so absorbed into the video games; staring at the screen for hours can lead lead to damage of the pupil and or cornea of the eye. Children’s vision will be lowered to a level where they will either need eyewear or doctor’s medical attention. In conclusion, censoring violent video games will help children with their physical heath by helping them stay in shape with their ow...
There have been so many experiments and studies to try and figure out if video games have a negative or positive effect on our children. A growing body of research is linking violent video game play to aggressive cognitive, attitudes and behaviors (D.A. Gentile, 2004). The 'Path of the 'Path of the 'Path of the 'Path of the 'Path of the 'Path of the 'Path of the 'Path of Video games can obviously be dangerous for our children, causing aggression, bad performances in school and obesity. Although we cant blame all of these problems on the use of video games, there have been many studies to prove so.... ...

Video games are electronic sports which involves user interface and user interactivity. They generate a visual response which helps to provide excitement and entertainment. Video games are played on computers, televisions, or any kind of device with a display screen. People play video games for fun and also because some games are more productive and useful. With growth in technology video games have become very popular in children. Those games can be informative and a brain-builder for children but at the same time it may be so violent that they not only become the reason for the children to be destructive but also vigorously increase anti-social behavior.
Video games are not considered as a serious addiction amongst teenagers and adults, often being compared to severe cases of addiction, such as drug abuse or alcohol abuse that may result in the appearance of a decrease in the severity of the addiction. However, video game addiction is a serious matter and has unhealthy consequences for an individual 's life and their health; spending too much time playing video games can take a great toll on one 's physical and mental well-being. Continuing unhealthy patterns of video game activity for prolonged periods of time can result in mental health issues, physical health problems, and a decline in a social life.
Video games are used to improve physical health. Playing video games does not mean being inactive. New and improved video games involve and incorporate different types of movement in the actual game. Certain video games can reduce fat causing global weight loss (Recio 143). By turning game systems into exercise, new generation games draw people into activities and get heart rates pumping. Schools have incorporated video games into part of their physical education program. Children’s waists lines have gone down by inches due to playing video games in gym class. In gym, the machines teach things like balance, timing, and coordina...
Games are a lifelong hobby and enjoyment of mine, and as I grew up, I have begun to wonder more and more about the workings of them. I find it fascinating how art, along with storytelling and more technical fields such as programming, can come together in order to create not only a product, but an experience. Although they draw from many different fields and subjects, video games have become their own art form. They are capable not only of providing entertainment, but also of tackling complex problems in an interactive manner. The way games can influence both individuals and our society as a whole is one of the main factors which draw me to this course.
