Medicinal Uses of Video Games
There are many people who say that videogames and TV will rot your brain and cause brain damage. Plenty of research and articles are against children playing video games, but there are some that are in favor of video games, and that number is growing every day. Video games can have some medicinal uses from helping patients in physical therapy to improving ones vison. Many people do not see these uses and for every one for video games there are five who are against it, however as that number is slowly growing.
When you think of children playing video games you probably think of a child sitting in front of a TV or monitor for hours on end. This is not the case with a lot of games. Now while there may be a fair amount of children who do this there are a lot who know how to moderate their gaming and exercise. Some medical professionals have actually recommend patients to play video games as part of their treatment.
Treatment can be very boring for some people especially when it comes to physical therapy. Physical therapy is defined as “Process of doing a group of repetitive exercises in order to regain the range of motion

lost due to an accident or injury” A lot of people do not complete their home exercises and therefore do not heal properly or take much longer to heal. Patient compliance can be as low as 30% for home exercises. Cosmin Mihaiu a member of the TED team talked about a video game he made that integrated an X-Box One Kinect system to track a patient’s movements. The video game can be programed to a wide variety of exercises for patients. (Mihaiu TED Talk) One example he used in his TED Talk was an auction game where the player needs to stand up to bid on an item that they want and sit down to continue on to the next item. He continues to explain that this would be a great and interactive way for geriatric patients who need to do a sit and standing exercise. Another example he used was a game where you played as a bee that had to collect pollen and avoid other bugs and obstacles. You control the bee by doing a bicep curl exercise. One final example Mihaiu used was a game that had a sort of interactive doctor that would do the exercises with you. The main driving force behind these games and this invention is that Physical therapy can be very boring and making the exercise fun and interactive would help patients want to do their exercises especially at home when they don’t have a doctor next to them helping them. Physical therapy isn’t the only medicinal use of video games. There are some studies that have shown that some types of video games can slightly improve vison. Amblyopia, commonly known as Lazy eye affects approximately three recent of children and is the leading cause of visual impairment. If left untreated past the age of seven, it is usually considered untreatable, however there have been several studies that indicate that first person shooter games or FPSs have shown to improve eyesight. First Person Shooter games are very different from other games such as Platform games, Logic games, and Puzzle Games. They all are very slow pace and methodical. On average people who play these types of games have a larger Entorhinal Cortex. This is used in conjunction with the hippocampus to create maps and memories of your life and knowing when and where something happened as well as how it fits in to the time line of events. Logic games along with many other types of games also cause the brain to have more plasticity which helps the brain to change, adapt, and heal. First Person Shooters differ from other types of games because they require a different approach as to how they are played. Unlike games such as Logic or RPGs, they are fast paced and require you to pay attention to a “whole field of vision” as stated by Maurer in her article. She explains a study where several participants were instructed to play 10 hours a week with no more than two hours a day. At the end of a month they participants had improved vison in certain tasks that they had difficulty in before. Heather Fishel wrote an article about how patients who suffered from Amblyopia gained a thirty percent increase to their vison by playing the FPS Medal of Honor.
The patients were instructed to play for no more than two hours a day and by the end of the month patients with not only Amblyopia but Cataracts as well had improvements to their vison. She explains that “With frequent, sudden point-of-view changes and nonstop action, gamers must use an extreme amount of focus to catch every detail. This intense concentration hones the eyes and their muscles, training individuals to use their sharpened sight away from the TV as well.” She continues to explain that FPSs provide an adrenaline rush that also helps with brain plasticity. People who have 20/20 vison can also improve their vision beyond 20/20 if they play
FPSs. Video may be seen as bad for people’s health, but they are starting to be used in medicinal settings to help patients recover from their ailments. If used in moderation I believe that they can be and will continue to be used. Video games are fun and interactive and more and more children are playing them and might as well reap the benefits while playing.
...While there are violent games out there, children could, with the help of their parents, play cleaner games such as The Legend of Zelda or any game in the Mario series, and in the end, be benefited from it. Whether their stress is relieved, their brains stronger, or their connections with their families made unbreakable, video games can truly be a good thing for kids.
Video games, in conclusion, are not harmful for young adults. The theories behind all the selfish acts should not have been led to video games. These games are good for young adults and can help development. Do you want to prohibit your child from learning lifelong skills?
Another reason that video games are bad for children is because it can cause injuries towards the person physically as well as mentally. It can cause auditory hallucinations, enuresis, encopresis, wrist pain, neck pain, elbow pain, tenosynovitis, hand arm vibration syndrome, repetitive strain injuries, peripheral neuropathy, and even obesity (NCBI. US. National Library of Medicine). Tests have shown that as you get older the more video games you play the less ability you have to multitask while playing games. As well as not being able to multitask, video games distract players from the sensation of pain, so in theory a child could have a severe injury and not even know about it which could cause the...

Videogames are amazing they promote creativity, team-work and social interaction. Video games actually work to increase how good your eyesight is. One study done by scientist’s Daphne Bavelier and her team found that playing five to fifteen hours of action games (e.g., Call of Duty) a week increased how good the participants vision was in two ways "The first way is that they 're actually able to resolve small detail in the context of clutter… The other way that they are better is actually being able to resolve different levels of grey”. Sure games have violence in them but honestly what doesn’t, films and TV are chock full of it, heck even Tom and Jerry promote violence and animal abuse plus there is a reason that those big shiny red “18” stickers are put on games so that it is clearly shown that children aren 't supposed to be given access to these specific types of game. As for the “waste of time” nothing is really a waste of time if you gain something from it such as
Video games have improved a lot since they were first introduced. They have also made a lot of impacts in our generation by making gamers more social, teaching children through educational video games, and how video games can improve our health. Furthermore, the articles show many different ways that proves that video games aren’t bad for you physically and emotionally. Since video games were introduced they have changed our society.
Studies have shown that there is a wide variety of physical and behavioral effects that video games can have on their players.
This is a very important topic to me because I myself used to be absorbed in video games, and through those hours wasted I have accomplished nothing. I am hoping that through this project I may be able to open the stubborn eyes of the public and possibly convert just one person into finding an alternative to their excessive gaming. What I really wanted to learn through this research project is some of the specific neurological and psychological impacts of playing videogames, for both an instantaneous amount of time and a prolonged amount of time. I also wanted to discover whether or not video gaming could cause any physical impacts. I already know a great deal about video games because I have always been quite the connoisseur of Nintendo licensed products. I have played a wide range of genres of videogames, from Halo to Mario Kart to Pokémon to Grand Theft Auto. They are very entertaining and it is easy to get lost in them for hours. Some of the questions I wanted answered are as follows: are video games addictive? Do video games have the capability to have deep psychological impacts? Can someone actually die from playing video games? These are only a few of the questions I had buzzing ...
There have been so many experiments and studies to try and figure out if video games have a negative or positive effect on our children. A growing body of research is linking violent video game play to aggressive cognitive, attitudes and behaviors (D.A. Gentile, 2004). The 'Path of the 'Path of the 'Path of the 'Path of the 'Path of the 'Path of the 'Path of the 'Path of Video games can obviously be dangerous for our children, causing aggression, bad performances in school and obesity. Although we cant blame all of these problems on the use of video games, there have been many studies to prove so.... ...
The author provides examples of how it has negatively affected an individual’s health such as muscle pain, seizures, obesity, aggressive behavior, poor grades, lack of vitamin D, changes in appearance, sleep deprivation, and attention problems. This source is credible because it demonstrated the popular belief of negative effects of playing video games while providing sources of where the author got their information. The weakness of this source is that some of the problems can easily be solved by management skills such as working out from time to time to reduce
Physical therapy is a fun and exciting healthcare profession that helps people. It is all about helping other people who have problems with their body, muscles, joints and other parts of their body. Patients includes accident victims and individuals with disabling conditions such as low back pain, arthritis, heart disease, fractures, head injuries, and cerebral palsy. Physical therapy will perform an evaluation of your problem or difficulty. They evaluate your problem by performing tests and measures to assess the problem. These tests includes muscle strength, joint motion, sensory and neurological, coordination, balance, observation, palpation, flexibility, postural screening, movement analysis, and special tests are designed for a particular problem. Next, they develop a treatment plan and goals and then manage the appropriate treatment to aid in recovery of a problem or dysfunction. Physical therapists are able to treat their patients by using many different treatments depending on the type of injury. Some of the treatments are electrical stimulation, hot and cold packs, infrared and ultrasound to reduce swelling or relieve pain. These treatments are used to help decrease pain and increase movement and function. Therapeutic exercises instructions will help restore strength, movement, balance, or skill as a guide towards full functional recovery. Physical therapy provides "hands on techniques" like massage or joint mobilizations skills to restore joint motion or increase soft tissue flexibility. They will focus on basic skills such as getting out of bed, walking safely with crutches or a walker, moving specific joints and muscles of the body. Physical therapists treatment includes patient education to teach them how to deal with a current problem and how to prevent the problem in the future. Such documentation is used to track the patient's progress, and identify areas requiring more or less attention. They encourage patients to use their own muscles. Their main goal is to improve how an individual functions at work and home.
Video games are not considered as a serious addiction amongst teenagers and adults, often being compared to severe cases of addiction, such as drug abuse or alcohol abuse that may result in the appearance of a decrease in the severity of the addiction. However, video game addiction is a serious matter and has unhealthy consequences for an individual 's life and their health; spending too much time playing video games can take a great toll on one 's physical and mental well-being. Continuing unhealthy patterns of video game activity for prolonged periods of time can result in mental health issues, physical health problems, and a decline in a social life.
When playing video games, the coordination and concentration can physically, socially, and mentally benefit the user. Research today shows that certain video games can reduce fat and therefore promote weight loss. Video game have been claimed as addictive, a waste of time, and a distraction. While this does apply to some people, others have found the benefits to playing video games. These benefits include simulating working environments, helping people escape working environments, and giving great experiences. Although these benefits seems to be beneficial, it still stands that video games are a waste of time in which other things can be more productive.
