Conclusion:
For my group’s term project, I will use the above information to determine what editing styles and techniques I will use when editing our short film. Our film, Victim of Living, deals with loss, misery and emotional recovery. We will aim to create tension and drama and to use cinematography and editing techniques to portray the experience and emotional state of our main character, Nora. At the start of the film we will aim to create tension. Through the use of slow camera movement and long shots with very few cuts between clips we can portray a sense of danger and suspense. I will use pace to convey the emotions of the character and the meaning behind each shot through the length of the shots relative to one another. We will show the shifts in time and place through immediately cutting between two different locations with the main character in two contrasting emotional states from the one scene to the next. We will introduce new ideas into the film by using close ups and long shots to focus on the object that represents the new idea or on the hands, eyes or smile of the main character to show the development of her emotions. I will use close-ups to bring out the emotions behind each action. Camera movement and pace (created through editing) can emotionalize the action. By using these techniques, I can create subtext. The subtext is what will drive our film forward because of the reliance on the underlying emotions of our main character that is prominent throughout the narrative. Every action and word of our main character conveys her emotional state.
