There are several program initiatives that Verizon has developed that increase awareness and give back to the community while educating and motivating their workers. One of Verizon’s initiatives and corporate responsibility is to educate youth, expand awareness and involvement of girl’s in STEM, which stands for science, technology, engineering and math. These fields have a limited number of females in it and Verizon wants to make it more accessible for women to start a career in them.
This summer program helps develop the skills and motivation necessary for advancement in these fields. Because women are becoming a large part of the work force, exploring fields typically before not pursued by women is now becoming more common.

initiative was promoted so that women can have a level playing field in the workforce. This program not only helps young girls become educated in the science fields, but when these young women begin their careers Verizon recognizes the challenges of women for a work-life balance today. This leads us to another of Verizon’s initiatives, Verizon’s Global Women’s Summit At this summit, Verizon employees discuss women’s issues and women management motivate individuals to achieve their goals in a global arena. “Verizon has developed a specific training program, services and mentoring opportunity to address challenges of women and their work – life balance specifically deal with.” We have learned that the work- life balance is important to recognize in organizations as women become a substantial portion of the work force in this chapter. Verizon focuses on diversity because Verizon has a very diverse work force and a diverse customer base and so being well versed and encompass diversity in everything they do because it is necessary to accommodate both the work force and customer base.
Diverse work groups are growing and this makes it necessary for Verizon to stay ahead of any new diversity issue and be pro- active to promote a positive environment. To demonstrate that they have diversity and encourage it they must show it at all levels of the organization. By having a diverse work force and using fair policies for hiring the potential for any discrimination can be lessened.
As we learned Women’s issues are becoming more apparent as they enter the work force again and need a work-life balance to take care of their families. Of course diversity is about other groups as well, women make up almost half of the workforce now. Management must know the equal employment opportunity laws, know how to use employee’s skills and perspectives can contribute to the company as a whole. Giving back to the community while supporting employee mentoring and motivating employees by giving them the tools to be successful is helpful to both the company and individuals in which it
helps.
Subsequently what is done is that selected high schools develop a curriculum that is organized around a specific career cluster, which are like a specialized charter school. The goal is to feature a series advanced “pathway” courses that can help students to enrich their knowledge through work-based learning and academics. In turn, this specialized education will allow student to demonstrate their understanding through assessments and industry credentialing opportunities. As well these schools are enrolled in a learning exchange that have partnerships that are organized to support the programs of study by coordinating statewide networks of education partners, businesses, industry associations, labor, and other organizations (2013, p. 21-23). Consequently, the program is driven to help high school students develop a career path and to receive exploratory education that will given them an advantage in either college endeavors or in the job market.
STEM, also known as Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, is the field that is advancing at a rapid rate. Within STEM, there are many occupations across the four fields. As years go on, more and more people start to have a growing interest in STEM, but this can’t be said for women. Women almost take up half of the workforce, but when it comes to STEM, women only take about 24%, almost half of the women aren’t participating in STEM. The numbers continue to get worse. From 2000 - 2009, the numbers have remained at a constant 24%. At this rate, employers could potentially see a decline in women’s representation, but there have been efforts to change this rate (Beede et al par. 6). This could mean disastrous problems in the world as more problems will arise and there’s nothing to be done because companies are non-diverse and
First, our company should understand the importance of gender diversity. In the first article “Why Workplace Gender Diversity Matters”, Anne Marsan pointed out directly that most tech companies lack of gender diversity. Then she explained several reasons why gender diversity matters to companies. Using logos, she mentioned that women in U.S. purchased 50 percent of computers, 50 percent of cars and 80 percent of consumer goods. In other words, organizations with gender diversity are better to connect with
Although many women have achieved a college education, many will nit be able to share the same values as there male peers. Many women will have certain messages conveyed about them which will be used to profile them in their selective fields. These factors will contribute to the controversial issues facing women today in the workplace. The gender roles that have challenge women today will not allow the equal status of women who are trying to advance there job careers. Only with enough support from activist groups of women’s rights will break these stereotypes and, allow women to have a fair and equal role in society.
Women are overrepresented in low-income service sectors and public sectors, while underrepresented in the science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields and high-income private sectors, especially in top managerial positions. In other words, the concentration of women in the lower-income workforce contributes greatly to the overall gender wage gap.
Fields that were formerly male-dominated are actively recruiting women to diversify their staff. They have recognized the power of diverse thinking in business. Articles online explain how to recruit women in technology and science fields, among others.
Today, however, women have integrated themselves into every field of activity and every kind of industry smoothly and skillfully. Whether travelling twenty days of the month or accepting transfers, they are as performance-oriented, sincere, competent and persevering as their male counterparts, if not more. Their presence in the corporate world is now more a rule than an exception such that a feminist agenda and, in fact, any speci...
The intent of this project was to promote gender equity in STEM coursework providing all students enhanced postsecondary opportunities. Working with a predominantly Hispanic, low SES freshman population, inteventions became more all-encompassing and a way to advocate for all students who expressed interest in STEM-related fields. Comprehensive school counseling programs are important components of a school’s closing the gap strategies. Low performing schools such as this small rural junior senior high school that are on state improvement plans are looking for effective and creative ways to promote academic achievement.
Having diversity in the workplace allows for greater growth within a company due to the different opinions and perspectives of people from all walks of life. To remain competitive, many companies are being advised to recruit, develop and retain men and women of all different backgrounds, ages and races (Cox and Blake, 1991). By doing this and also accommodating the needs of their demographically diverse workforce, companies will become much more appealing places to work therefore reducing turnover and absentee
Libit, H. Summer curricula bridge gender gap programs encourage girls’ interest in math, science, technology. (August 13, 2001)
Although, trying to get women in this field is very difficult due to many reasons that involve females from going into this job. Whitecraft and Williams, stated, “Some argue that women are less likely than men to possess cognitive abilities at the extreme right tail of the distribution, which are necessary to compete in computer science” (Whitecraft and Williams 222). One of the reasons women avoid STEM jobs is because research has found that males are more capable in highly math courses than females. The subjects that males and females excel in were also researched, and were found to be an important contribution to why women are not in computer science. “Males excelled in science, mathematics, spatial reasoning, social studies, and mechanical skills. Females excelled in verbal abilities, associative memory performance, and perceptual speed” (Whitecraft and Williams 223). The fact that more men are in STEM careers is because the research indicated that males excel in science and mathematics, which are two subjects that are needed to pursue STEM jobs. The way men and women thinks is one of the reasons there are not more women in the computer science
Another problem women have in the workplace is getting promotions. Woman who have worked for their company for many years, receiving great reviews and employee-of-the-year awards are often filled by less qualified men (Armour, 2008). The next problem women face is unfair pay. The U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics found that women working 41 to 44 hours per week earn 84.6 percent of what men working similar hou...
The researcher believes, in this fast-changing era, any kind of company or organization should be able to improve the quality of workplace diversity by having some important main factor to boost the new paradigm of a diverse workplace, such as:
With the ever-changing business environment, employers are adapting diversity guidelines and schemes that appeal to their employees, clients, vendors and suppliers. Diversity in the workplace brings with it a host of potential benefits, as well as potential conflicts for employers to manage. Diversity is about learning from each other in spite of our ethnic background and combining those differences into the workplace to gain experiences and enhance understanding Managing diversity in the workplace should be an essential part of the background of the entire organization. Successful organizations focus on instilling and embedding the values of diversity in their culture and management systems. These organizations
Women leaders have the crucial soft skills of empathy, innovation, facilitation, and active listening (Masaoka, 2006). They also have first-hand life experiences that bring technical skills and experiences from the street level to the workplace (Masoka, 2006). Women often build stronger relationships with clients and outside contacts than their male counterparts. This relationship building skill, provides a key aspect which helps to move businesses forward (Giber et al., 2009). Fortune 500 companies with a high percentage of women significantly outperformed those with fewer women. Companies with the highest representation of women showed higher returns on equity than those with fewer women employees (Giber et al., 2009). Thus, future organizations may have a higher percentage of female leaders than we have experienced in the past. Future leaders must ensure that there is equality among the workforce and that women are accurately represented among the
