With diversity including many different elements, the concept of workplace diversity also covers a broad spectrum of topics, and continues to evolve as many companies look to expand globally. This subject has become increasingly important among managers over the last couple of decades, and has helped to reinforce other concepts such as affirmative action and equal opportunity employment. There have been many different laws passed that have helped to develop the diverse workplace into what it is today. Also over the years, there have been several organizations formed to help support women and minorities in the workforce. They helped to try and keep the workplace diverse and fair for all. Before the 1930s men accounted for almost all of the workforce. Women slowly began to get jobs, mostly as clerks, and the workforce predominantly consisting of males, began to see many more women. In 1920 the Women’s Bureau of the Department of Labor was created. The goals of this bureau was to reduce barriers that inhibit or prevent women’s access to – and retention in – better jobs, and to ensure women’s fair treatment in the workplace (Overview of the Women 's Bureau, n.d.). Diversity is a composite of racial, gender, ethnic, nation origin, cultural, attitudinal, social-economic, and personal differences. With the many legal implications and issues surrounding every aspect of the Human Resource function, the human Resource department must be prepared to resolve issues in a timely and cost efficient manner. With the saturation of laws surrounding personnel, nearly every decision made by the Human Resource Department has the potential for legal suits. Even if the Human Resource department has done everything that is required of them, it can still be costly to defend it. That is why supervisors, managers and workers must be trained on managing diversity in the workplace.

In 2018 we live in a society that feeds off innovation. Innovation is achieved when a conglomerate of perspectives is intertwined into producing an outcome that fulfills an unmet or unarticulated need. These ideas are formulated from the diversity that exist within the individuals in our society. Diversity extends beyond culture or race, transcending into the spheres of intellectual abilities, socioeconomic status, and ability status that one may be characterized as. Workplace diversity has become a growing concern within organizations. Managers are now challenged with learning new ways to effectively communicate the importance of embracing different races and ethnicities. Diversity encompasses many different characteristics including age, gender, ethnicity, religion and disabilities (Robbins). As of late, age has become more of a concern as the baby boomer generation begins to reach retirement age; many are not retiring early but instead are working well into their seventies. Unfortunately for those baby boomers, the number of retirees decreased during the 2008-2009 recession mostly due to economic struggle. People cannot afford to retire, perhaps because they did not save enough for retirement or had to dip into their retirement fund to survive earlier in life. In addition to age discrimination, gender discrimination is another common diversity issue. According to “Organizational Behavior,” as of 2000, more women are working full time, have more education, and have started to close the earning gap between men and women (Robbins). Most commonly, women are targeted in the workplace fo...
