Julia Alvarez’s novel, Before We Were Free is about the struggles of a young girl named Anita de la Torre who is under the evil dictatorship of Trujillo. Papi, Anita’s father and Tio Toni, Anita’s uncle are conspirators in a plan to assassinate Trujillo they succeed with the assassination, but then, unfortunately, get arrested and killed later. The excitement and drama created by Trujillo and the effects it has on Anita make an interesting novel, but the authors use of literary devices truly make the novel come to life. Julia Alvarez author of Before We Were Free, uses literary devices such as metaphors, symbolism, and motif to strengthen her writing and help the reader comprehend the novel. Before Papi and Tio Toni start executing their plan
they say goodbye to the family, little do they know this is the last time they will see them, Alvarez describes Mami’s face as “a china cup someone has dropped on the floor” (Alvarez 99). Alvarez’s use of metaphors throughout the novel make her writing more interesting to read because they help to paint a vivid picture in one’s mind, so one can connect to Anita easier. In addition to metaphors, symbols are often used to enhance the writing. “ (Trujillo’s) portrait, which was turned to the wall earlier in the evening”(99). The reader thinks deeper by finding the symbol and thinking about the meaning behind it, and if the symbol has any ties to other literary devices, for example, this symbol ties to foreshadowing. Lastly, the motif of losing and finding her voice has brought the whole novel together. Anita lives in constant fear of Trujillo and his secret police, and she must be silent so the secret police do not know about the conspirators’ plan to assassinate Trujillo. Trembling in fear Anita says “I feel like screaming…but instead, I swallow that scream, and suddenly it’s very quiet inside of me”(79). Although fear keeps her quiet, she overcomes everything holding her back, and spreads her voice through the form of a diary. The reader watches Anita mature and becomes a strong young woman, but without literary devices such as metaphors, symbolism, and motif the novel would not be as powerful and meaningful as it is.
When it comes to analyzing the “banana massacre” scene in chapter 15, I found three narrative techniques the author used to describe this scene. Therefore, one can notice that this part of the book is the climax. As a result, one infers what the author is trying to say about Latin American history and politics.

Demetria Martínez’s Mother Tongue is divided into five sections and an epilogue. The first three parts of the text present Mary/ María’s, the narrator, recollection of the time when she was nineteen and met José Luis, a refuge from El Salvador, for the first time. The forth and fifth parts, chronologically, go back to her tragic experience when she was seven years old and then her trip to El Salvador with her son, the fruit of her romance with José Luis, twenty years after she met José Luis. And finally the epilogue consists a letter from José Luis to Mary/ María after her trip to El Salvador. The essay traces the development of Mother Tongue’s principal protagonists, María/ Mary. With a close reading of the text, I argue how the forth chapter, namely the domestic abuse scene, functions as a pivotal point in the Mother Tongue as it helps her to define herself.

En la tiempo de sus obras las mujeres estaba tratando salir de los estereotipos de antes. Esta problema social tomo un afecto en Elena. Aunque ella no viene de un movimiento literatura directamente, ella escrita con el concepto de compremetido. En su narrative El Recado ella crea un mujer estereotipical que no puede controlar sus emociones. La titula es eso porque ella viene a ver su amante, pero el no esta, asi ella escribe las cosas que sentia. La perspectiva es de un personaje y ella nunca interacta con otros personajes. En facto la unica descripcion de un personaje otro de la protagonista es de su amante Martin. Habla de otros personajes, pero solamente de sus acciones. Porque ellas es la unica perspectiva que tenemos es sencillo a sentar compasion para una protagonista de quien nombre no aun sabemos. Ella da la descripcion de toda que vea, y mas importante todo que se sienta. Tambien tropos y figuras retoricas dan un tono significante al poema. Estos sentimientos de la portagonista y el tono emocional de la narrativa transporta una tema de una mujer estereotipical y debil quien quiere ser reconocido.

Junot Diaz’s “Otravida, Otravez” depicts a perspective of life where one’s present and future always reflects their past in some way. Diaz’s representation of symbolic figures, convey how a person’s past can be carried into the future. Diaz’s use of symbolic figures includes the dirty sheets washed by Yasmin, the letters sent by Virta to Ramon, and the young girl who begins working with Yasmin at the hospital. These symbolic figures and situations remind the readers that the past will always play a major role in one’s present. Additionally, Diaz’s word choice, where Spanish words appear in many different parts of the reading, suggests that indirectly, one’s past habits are not easily broken.
In “The Fortune Teller,” the author, Joaquim Maria Machado de Assis, uses symbolism to prove to one that an affair is not worth a person’s life. He uses the letter to symbolize hate between Villela and Camillo regarding the affair. This very ambiguous letter has terrified Camillo and put an end to his life. The letter enhances the theme of the short story by showing the anger and hate that Villela now had for Camillo. This hate is a focal point in the short story that leads to ending the affair along with Camillo and Rita’s life. Ultimately, the affair caused a large amount of tension between the three. However, the author was successful in grabbing the reader’s attention with the letter as the turning point of the short story.

This essay will focus on the analysis of the story Antojos by Julia Alvarez. The setting and characters can be one of the essential parts of a story. But in this instance, we will see how both of these things are of great importance to driving the plot events of the story.
The poem “Exile” by Julia Alvarez dramatizes the conflicts of a young girl’s family’s escape from an oppressive dictatorship in the Dominican Republic to the freedom of the United States. The setting of this poem starts in the city of Trujillo in the Dominican Republic, which was renamed for the brutal dictator Rafael Trujillo; however, it eventually changes to New York when the family succeeds to escape. The speaker is a young girl who is unsophisticated to the world; therefore, she does not know what is happening to her family, even though she surmises that something is wrong. The author uses an extended metaphor throughout the poem to compare “swimming” and escaping the Dominican Republic. Through the line “A hurried bag, allowing one toy a piece,” (13) it feels as if the family were exiled or forced to leave its country. The title of the poem “Exile,” informs the reader that there was no choice for the family but to leave the Dominican Republic, but certain words and phrases reiterate the title. In this poem, the speaker expresser her feeling about fleeing her home and how isolated she feels in the United States.

En sus tres poemarios, la poeta inaugura un estilo y unas temáticas que en ocasiones coinciden y en otras se apartan de los poetas entre los que convivió (López Jiménez, "Julia de Burgos” 141). Julia buscó abrirse paso hacia nuevas formas de escritura y trazar rutas alternas a los cánones establecidos, tanto por sus contemporáneos como por la tradición literaria. Poema en veinte surcos, su primer libro publicado en 1938, representa ese anhelo de trazar múltiples rutas mediante las cuales pueda realizar una búsqueda de nuevas voces, perspectivas y temáticas. Precisamente, en la poesía de Julia, sobre todo la de su primer poemario, se advierte un deseo de definirse y afirmar sus principios poéticos y políticos. Según Ivette López Jiménez, muchos poemas de su primer libro se destacan porque “se alejan de las fórmulas de la poesía criollista” y porque en ellos “la voz se afirma como una ‘rama desprendida’ o como ‘brote de todos los suelos de la tierra... de todos los hombres y de todas las épocas” (“Julia de Burgos” 143). Hay pues, un intento por alejarse de los discursos autorizados, lo que la lleva a identificarse con los espacios y los sujetos marginados. Desde esta perspectiva, Julia de Burgos pasa a ocupar el rol de “poeta cívico” y su discurso a ser uno de denuncia y protesta. Por ello, propone una reconsideración de los espacios marginales, del “otro” con el objetivo de traerlos a primer plano. Con esto, establece una “actitud a la avanzada del pensamiento y de las costumbres, sobre todo lo relacionado con los cambios necesarios en la sociedad”, en palabras de Manuel de la Puebla (16).
