For our presentation, we were responsible for interviewing a unit secretary. We had good luck proceeding with our project and had an idea to give a unique perspective of the unit secretary by interviewing a session assistant. Session assistant is a position that is a form of unit secretary but with additional responsibilities. Our work started off nicely and we cooperated with each other very well. We agreed that Sasha would conduct the interview and Yoonhee would assemble the PowerPoint. We found a person to interview without much hardship since Sasha had a friend who is currently working as a session assistant. Yoonhee was yet familiar with neither unit secretary nor session assistant while Sasha had a few years of working experience as a session assistant and had the most experience in the hospital and subsequently with unit secretaries. Sasha provided a lot of personal experience and information in addition to the content of the interview. Because of this, we were all able to be on the same page and understand what we were working on as the project progressed. We learned to how to collaborate, respect and be open to each other’s idea, which are the essential components of inter-professional communication in our nursing practice. We also had to adjust ourselves to each other due to our differing schedules and locations, in this way we learned how to plan and manage the time to work on our project. We agreed to use Skype to connect and work on our project. It was a very good idea to communicate through Skype because we could practice for our presentation while giving and receiving feedback each other. The low reed section to me is not just my section, it is my family, and I would love to have the honor of calling myself mom. However, Lauren will always be the original mom and my biggest role model in band. She was the first one to give me hug whenever I was upset, she made sure I didn't get sunburned during band camp, and was overall the most loving, caring section leader I most likely will ever have. As section leader, I would like to devote all my time, love, and leadership to my section and show what an amazing marching experience truly is. For my informational interview I spoke with a nurse who has experience working on a medical surgical unit in a hospital setting. She has been a nurse for 10 years. She also has her bachelors degree in nursing. I started my interview by introducing myself and explaining what my assignment was about, and how she could help me tremendously with answering some questions regarding her nursing career, and what she does as a medical surgical nurse.
This approach is referred to as the Interprofessional Collaboration Practice (IPC). To become an effective leader and follower, each profession will need to work together for the same goal and purpose, which is the care of the patient. By negotiating, consulting, interacting, and discussing with other team members, we reach a common understanding of the decisions being made (2011). When there is a lack of communication, information can become misunderstood and mistakes and confrontations can arise. Dufrene (2012), has stated how graduate nursing students lack the confidence to communicate with other professionals, this in part with limited opportunities during their clinical experiences.
Not only is professional communication important in the portrayal of a good nursing image and behaviour, it also plays a vital role in patient care and health outcomes. The ANMC standards serve as a good guidance on the need to establish therapeutic relationship through effective communication. As nurses spend relatively more time with patients, they play a significant role in bridging a patient and doctor. Hence, it is would help for nurses to constantly hone their communication skills through experience over time.

For that, I interviewed my boss, Karen. I see her almost every work day but there were still many things I wanted to ask her about. I knew that she had been married to a man before she met her wife, and that she still had his last name even after separating and remarrying. I also knew that her father was a Methodist minister and performed her marriage ceremony back when he could’ve gotten in a lot of hot water for doing so. I knew that she was adopted, too. But the rest of her life, the in-between moments, were still a mystery to me. So, I really enjoyed that interview. As you can tell from the transcription, we laughed a lot and got along well. I think she felt comfortable and she told me later that she had enjoyed talking with me. I also came more prepared and with more questions. It was hard to do my initial research on my student interviewee because there wasn’t a lot of prior information that I could find about her. Communication in the nursing practice and in healthcare is important because when talking with patients, their families, and staff, the nurse and the nursing student needs to be able to efficiently express the information that they want the other person to understand. “Verbal communication is a primary way of transmitting vital information concerning patient issues in hospital settings” (Raica, 2009, para. 1). When proper communication skills are lacking in nursing practice, the chances of errors and risks to the patient’s safety increases. One crucial aspect of communication that affects the patient care outcome is how the nurse and the nursing student interacts and communicates with the physicians and other staff members. If the nurse is not clear and concise when relaying patient information to other members of the healthcare team the patient care may be below the expected quality.
...th the patient I kept thinking that if this were my mother how would I want the nurse to treat her. I tried to behave in the way I would expect a nurse to treat me. I had preconceived notions before meeting the patient and they were all laid to rest almost immediately, honestly I was nervous. But once I started it began to feel comfortable and the interview just flowed naturally.
Through this experience, I have become a better nurse. I am more aware of key strategies that I can use with my patients who are unable to clearly verbalize their needs, and I have a broader understanding and increased appreciation for communication. This is something many take for granted every day, and it is such an important factor in fulfilling our needs. Without communication, nurses are unable to provide care to patients because the nurses do not know what the patient’s needs are. Therefore, as nurses, it is extremely important and our responsibility to efficiently communicate with all of our patients each and every day.
