CONCEPT 8: BARRIERS IN PROCESS OF COMMUNICATION DURING HEALTH EDUCATION IN THE COMMUNITIES. 8.1 Introduction This concept is taken from Block 9, Module 10 which is entitled as “Health Promotion and Behavioral Change Communication (Principles and Methods of Community Health Education)”. The Joint Committee on Health Education and Promotion Terminology of 2001 defined Health Education as “any combination of planned learning experiences based on sound theories that provide individuals, groups, and communities the opportunity to acquire information and the skills needed to make quality health decisions”. Wiehrich and koontz (2005), say that communication is the transfer of information from a sender to a receiver, with the information being understood by the receiver. In nursing care communication pattern can either be verbal or non-verbal. Verbal communication involves use of words to express one’s feeling or to pass information e.g. Face-to-face, telephone and through other media means. Non-verbal communication involves sending and obtaining information through various ways that are not verbal e.g. touch, facial expression, eye movement, body posture, etc. 8.2 Significance of concept This concept will help staff nurses and midwives working in various healthcare delivery systems in the communities to know what factors that hinder the process of communication during health education. This concept will also be of help to the nursing students and other health healthcare personnel to have knowledge on factors that could hinder communication process during health education in communities. • Physiological factors- poor hearing and sight issues, illnesses, poor understanding • Psychological factors- unhappiness, distrust, neurosis • Use of unacceptable language- slangs, jargon This factors have to be solved in order to ensure that good information is disseminated in the communities to enable them modify their unhealthy lifestyles, correct misconceptions about health, promote their health and prevent them of diseases. 8.4 application of concept to current job As a nurse, I ensure that effective communication is maintained during health communication to the public because it creates a friendly environment for people to understand and ask questions too. Most times the barriers to effective communication include; language differences, inadequate communication equipment, reluctance to participate by the public, etc. These factors result in ignorance, misconceptions about health and expose the health of the people to
