Because we as individuals all have different belief systems in terms of our overall views on health, our attitudes about life, etc., philosophical principles were developed. These principles help health educators become less biased towards their patient populations and more effective in the pursuits of educating others about the importance of making better health choices. For this reason, philosophy plays an essential role in health education. According to Black et all, “philosophy allows us to confidently address important topics more specific to the field such as defining the concept of optimal health, examining the relationship between free will and determinism, or explaining why one smoker is important” (Black et all, p. 13). Moreover, philosophies allow health educators to use logical reasoning that are applicable in changing one’s health behaviors. The World Health Organization (WHO) (2010) defines obesity and being overweight as an abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that may impair health. Body mass index (BMI) as Arterburn et al (2008) put forward is a measure of body fat based on height and weight and further suggest that any individual with a BMI of more than 30 is considered as obese. Tannahill et al (1999) advocate that health education could be viewed as communication activity aimed at enhancing positive health and preventing ill health in individuals and groups by influencing their beliefs, attitudes, and behaviour of persons with power and of the community. Butler et al (2008) defines health prevention as the measures for early detection of departure from good health. Whereas Heath (2002) concurs that the role and function of the nurse emphasise on health promotion and illness prevention, the Department of Health (2010) emphasises on the prevention of diseases, prolonging life and promoting health rather than treatment.
The school of Health Education is a practice whose effectiveness is difficult to be matched. From being taught in a classroom, to presenting to a community, the curriculum is designed to increase quality of life through a plethora of strategies. To create a uniformed method of transferring this knowledge to others successfully, different philosophies have been created for health educators to use as a sturdy foundation. Philosophy is imperative to one’s teaching mantra, for it determines how one lives, works, plays, and generally approaches life; all of which are necessary to consider when passing on knowledge and lifestyles to others. Of these different philosophies, I believe that the decision-making philosophy is the most beneficial to health educators, and that the behavior-change philosophy is the least.

These approaches will be defined and show how it could be used to tackle a life style behaviour using the Beattie’s model. The Beattie’s model is one of the several models health promoters use as a guide to direct the intervention mode and strategy which is suitable for any particular problem. This model will be used to identify the location of each of the two approaches, highlighting role of the health promoter in each approach, as well as discuss policies and ethical issues which are associated with each approach. Today, in the contemporary United States, there are many different influencers to a person’s health, such as poverty and/or unemployment. However, education is the most important influence on health because without a good, thorough education, people are less likely to have access to health care, be able to afford health care and they are more likely to live shorter lives. A lack of education makes poverty and unemployment more likely, which obviously have a negative effect on a person’s health.
Doctors who work at physical therapy clinics consistently encourage their patients to complete their therapy so that they can heal—although physicians may push their patient to move towards a healthier life, it does not mean that the patient will be open to suggestion; it would be up to the patient to truly decide to motivate themselves towards a healthier lifestyle—and until that happens the main service that a physical therapist can provide includes: education on lifestyle choices, and the consequence for each choice—how therapy can help the patient/how the therapy suits their needs, and how to set up a cost effective way to complete therapy.
“Skepticism assesses health claims based on medical science, not pseudoscience, quack or homeopathic potions, energy healing, or crackpot medical treatments” (Sagan). In the article, the author states that teaching students to be skeptical about some health claims and medical treatments will benefit students’ physical status because they will give more preference to real medicine and not waist their health on pseudoscience. Students will start to question non-medical approaches and their ineffectiveness and be more trustful in the real medicine that will save their lives and health conditions. It is especially important for people at a young age like high school students to give good knowledge about proper treatments of their health that will later affect their future life and skepticism will greatly help to achieve this goal. The author of the different publication also stated that “logical thinking saves lives based on using proven medicine versus avoiding blood transfusions for religious reasons, overdosing on supplements or not getting proper medical care” (Forgas).
The SMART goal of the obesity program is to reduce the obese population in Pitt County by creating a healthier diet program. Different objectives will be needed in order to reach this goal. The first objective is that from July 2016 through December 2016 100 community members will participate in the health department’s health promotion activities. This objective aligns with the reinforcement construct of the Social Cognitive Theory. By repeatedly participating in the activities, the 100 community members will be rewarded with the knowledge they receive and also motivation to change their behavior. By having an enjoyable time, they will be rewarded and want to keep coming back to the activities. The second objective is that following the 6-month duration; the majority of the participants will lose 2-10% of their original body weight by changing to a healthier diet. The reason the participants need to lose 2-10% of their body weight is to either prevent or reduce the chances of gaining other health diseases associated with obesity, including coronary artery disease and Type 2 Diabetes. This objective aligns with the self-efficacy construct. By losing a little bit of body fat, the participants will believe in their ability to lose weight, and continue to do so. The third objective is that on June 17 and June 24, informational brochures will be distributed to the community members to create awareness and reminders to join the obesity program, and gain knowledge about the health condition of obesity. This objective deals with the behavioral capability construct of the Social Cognitive Theory because the participants will gain the knowledge and skills needed to change their behavior through the brochures.
