“Properly open mind is just the most enjoyable way to live” Ronald Geiger said in his article about skepticism. Skepticism is one of the first steps on the road to open, creative and critical thinking that young people should take in their lives. It is important for the people in adolescence period, like high school students, to learn how to think properly and be critical toward some of the aspects in society. The course in skepticism in high school will allow students to have positive effects on their intellectual level, ethical standings, physical conditions and psychological status. Skepticism should be included in high school curricular and be one of the requirements for graduation because of its tremendous amount beneficial factors in “Skepticism assesses health claims based on medical science, not pseudoscience, quack or homeopathic potions, energy healing, or crackpot medical treatments” (Sagan). In the article author states that teach students to be skeptical about some health claims and medical treatments will benefit students’ physical status because they will give more preference to real medicine and not waist their health on pseudoscience. Students will start to question non-medical approaches and their ineffectiveness and be more trustful to the real medicine that will save their lives and health conditions. It is especially important for people in young age like high school students to give good knowledge about properly treatments of their health that will later affect their future life and skepticism will greatly help to achieve this goal. Author of different publication also stated that “logical thinking saves lives based on using proven medicine versus avoiding blood transfusions for religious reasons, overdosing on supplements or not getting proper medical care” (Forgas). Author stated the right point that student who will know how to properly use skepticism in life will help them to question the boundaries of their beliefs and if they are negatively affect their health conditions. With skepticism students will understand that if their beliefs for example not allowing them to get blood transfusions which In the article it says that “Think the right way! It minimizes gullibility and shame in succumbing to quackery and the laws of society” (Hess). Skepticism increases the self-esteem and confidence in students by allowing them to feel more relief if they disobeyed some of the social behaviors or standards. Many people especially in young age tend to feel guilty if they violated some of the typical behaviors that is usual for our society but skepticism will allow them to be unique and individual and have their own habits and not to feel shame if they are different in the way they behave or think. With skepticism students will understand that they should only do what makes them happy and their life. For example, it is typical for our society to get a specific education or get married before a certain age, and have a certain career status. Many people however, dot understand that it is their choice how to live their life and if they want to have unusual career, or get married after certain age they can definitely do it because it is their life. If there is something that will make a person happy, he should definitely do it and skepticism will help students to understand this concept. Also different article states that skepticism “generates personal responsibility for changing ourselves and our world rather than waiting for or giving
The idea of skepticism contains many different opinions, viewpoints, and details all within one big topic. Skepticism, in shorter terms, is defined as “the theory that we do not have any knowledge. We cannot be completely certain that any of our beliefs are true.” The two main types of skepticism are known as academic skepticism, arguing that the only thing we can know is that we know nothing, and Pyrrhonian skepticism, which rejects the ideas of academic skepticism entirely. Two philosophers that had very strong attitudes towards skepticism, were René Descartes who was a global skeptic, and David Hume who entertained both global and local skepticism. Due to their theories about skepticism as a whole, we can now understand it and put our own
Skepticism is a philosophical idea that not all knowledge is certain. It utilizes doubt to question the existence of knowledge. Skepticism can be used to challenge the concept of justified true belief. Justified true belief is the concept that if one believes something and that something is true then the belief is warranted true. Skepticism challenges this idea by questioning what is considered certain. This concept is investigated by how people tend to obtain knowledge, and questions if these methods are valid reasons for justification.
In the face of Rene Descartes extreme doubt, he found that he hoped to use skepticism to find complete certainty. When doubting something, Descartes would start by asking if it is rationally possible to doubt everything. When proceeding to do this, he will find if there is any undoubtedly truth. Instead of Descartes trying to examine every belief that he holds, he examines the origins of different types of beliefs. In doing this, he rejects any idea that could be mistaken, and will reject it right away.
A fallacy is defined as a failure in reasoning that renders an argument invalid, faulty reasoning, or a misleading or unsound argument. There are many kinds of fallacies and even websites devoted to describing the various kinds of logical fallacies. Fallacies, though, are slippery little fiends, which do not hesitate to creep in even where they are unwanted. No one wants their argument proved false, but careful, critical readers can spot these shifty deceivers. On the website of the Center for American Progress, there is an article – authored by Catherine Brown and Ulrich Boser – called “The DeVos Family Dynasty.” This article is a poor example of persuasive communication because there are many cases of ad hominem fallacy, the authors repeatedly
Across the world, regardless of location or ethnicity the outlook an individual has for another’s appearance is influenced by many characteristics. It could be a past occurrence they had with an individual that looks similar or from a stereotype that they have developed about a group of people. Rumors about an individual will typically change a person’s thought for the good or bad depending on the situation. It is something that everyone deals with, in America currently it is very hard to see European Immigrants as innocent people running from a war torn country after hearing rumors that they could be terrorists trying to invade the United States. All it takes in both stories to change the life of an individual it is just that
In today’s society, a lot of what we are exposed to in the media contains bias, resulting in not entirely accurate information. We can choose what we want to believe ignoring certain facts, which could affect the way we live regarding health and happiness. Ignorance is not “bliss”, but can have a negative impact on our health if we choose to ignore what is happening in the world around us. No matter how much you try to silence your surroundings, your culture, what you identify with, and your habits, will all speak for themself. Silence is the loudest of them all.
Meditation One sets forth skeptical doubts as an issue of examination in their own right. Skepticism is a frequently discussed and strongly debated topic in today’s philosophy. Descartes was the first to produce the confusing question of how we can claim to know with sureness anything about the world around us, and the thought of what is knowledge or skepticism. The concept is not that these doubts are likely, but that their possibility can never be entirely disregarded. If we can never be positive, we cannot claim to know anything. Skepticism is an attempt to provide a specific, needed foundation for our knowledge and awareness of the world. Skepticism is frequently pushed too far and seen as a challenge to humankind’s very idea of rationality.
Carl Sagan's The Fine Art of Baloney Detection depicts the importance of thinking skeptically before new ideas can be accepted (Sagan, 1997). Skeptical thinking pertains to our ability to distinguish what is true from what is false in some sort of logical argument or idea. Sagan promotes nine tools for this type of thinking, six of which I believe are the most useful will be discussed throughout this essay.
In the essay, The Baby Boom and the Age of the Subdivision, author Kenneth Jackson tells about the changes in the nation after World War II ended, and there was a spike in baby births. He talks about the creation of the Levittown suburbs to accommodate families in need of housing because of this. While the new rise of suburbs created a new kind of community and family, it also proved to have a changing effect on inner city areas and certain people.
This paper explores trophic levels and food chains to define the human trophic level (HTL). Using articles and studies based around the controversial debate of humans being top of the food chain, HTL was calculated and humans scored a 2.21 out of 5. This paper also clarifies what predators are at the top of the food chain and breaks down each trophic level and provides positions of specific organisms in the trophic levels.
Rene Descartes was a French philosopher and mathematician, he was born in 1596 and passed away in 1650, he believed in method of doubt suspends belief. “This method of critical analysis, which has traditionally been preferred in fields such as science and philosophy, begins from a position of skepticism in which we put aside our preconceived ideas (Boss). Critical thinking is the objective analysis and evaluation of an issue in order to form a judgement. So in my own word and in my opinion, it is how you think, analyze, interpret and resolve things, while using your logic.
Mandatory school uniforms are debatable on whether they are preferred or not. Some would say to agree with uniforms, while others would disagree of them. The dispute is arguable, and both sides have well reasoning. Personally, I say that all schools should have mandatory uniforms.
It is imperative that a student learn critical thinking because not all answers will come to them through a math equation or through reading. It may take some thinking and analyzing to form an answer or judgement that they see fit. Critical thinking can be used in science, especially when asking questions about the world. Carl Sagan clarifies this in the article. “Can We Know the Universe?” by saying, “Accordingly, science sometimes requires courage – at the very least the courage to question the conventional wisdom” (1). Although it may be frightening to question what we are taught, it shows curiosity of the topic, and it opens a new way of thinking to the people around you. Science, in a sense is finding new information that can prove the world for what it is. It is a way of understanding the universe and how it connects to us as a whole. Thinking is a step forward to gaining new knowledge. The mind is not filled with the knowledge of the world, rather it is an empty vessel that we must fill not only by going to school, but by thinking critically about the things we are taught. Galileo Galilei’s letter to the Grand Duchess is a great example of this. In this letter, he vents his frustration of the non-believers who say his calculations of the Copernican model is incorrect and does not follow the Bible, when it actually does. He argues, “I do not feel obligated to believe that the same God who has endowed us with senses, reason, and intellect has [declined] their use and by some other means to give us knowledge which we can attain by them” (5). Essentially, he expresses that God gave us a mind because he wants us to think. It is such an important asset to a person because we have all these senses as well as the ability to reason. Education needs to focus on these two points because critical thinking requires the strength of both reasoning and sensing. Without
People often times single me out for being a christian. They just love asking me about touchy subjects to see my response. And this is because, unfortunately, there are so many christians who have this idea that the whole world needs to see things the same way they do. You see so much hate coming out of a religion that claims to preach peace and love. Christians see it as protecting the bible but it just comes across as ignorant. I am not saying I don’t share in the opinions of many christians, but more than anything I am saying that christians need to learn that not everyone in the world is going to see it the same way they will. When it comes to sin, same sex marriage, and living a holy life there are more than one opinion on what is right. So, you can’t justify all of the hate-acts in the name of your religion. Instead use all that energy you waste on hate to love and help those around you, despite whether you think they are “right or wrong”. I believe that that’s what God is more concerned about.
Doubt arises in people’s lives often, and it can play different roles depending on how the person deals with it. From a personal standpoint, doubt should never hinder anyone from reaching their goals no matter what. It has been present before many times, and it is a very dangerous feeling to have. Contrary to popular belief, though, doubt can be both positive or negative depending on how it is handled. A feeling of doubt can either discourage someone from trying or inspire hope in someone. For these reasons, certainty and doubt go hand in hand. Nothing in life is certain. This realization can bring upon dubious thoughts rather than inspire
