Each person has their own type of learning style. A learning style is a method in which each of us utilizes to better understand material. A preferred learning style is a style in which the person can learn best, reflecting their strengths and weaknesses of the individual. In order to understand material we take it all in with our senses, through sight, sound, touch, smell or taste. Multiple Intelligence theory maintains that there are at least seven learning styles (“intelligences”): interpersonal, intra-personal, body/kinesthetic, visual/spatial, mathematical/logical, verbal/linguistic and musical/rhythmic (Lazear, D.1991). For the purposes of this paper I will simplify the seven categories into three main categories in which people best learn information: auditory, visual and tactile/kinesthetic. Most people possess the ability to use all three learning styles but learn best using one specific learning style.
Auditory learners are people who learn more effectively through listening to speeches or lectures. About 30 percent of the population is an auditory learner (Jacob, S. and Cole, S. 2005). For auditory learners they have to have sound in the background in order to learn the best. Auditory learners depend on hearing and speaking as a primary way of learning. They will use phrases like “it is starting to ring a bell” and “sounds good to me” to describe distinct memories. There are two types of auditory learners, auditory listeners and verbal processors. An auditory listener prefers to have things explained to them and will have trouble with written instructions; where as verbal processors must move their lips and reiterate the thoughts in order to understand the instructions. It is important for auditory learne...

...you must stretch periodically and take short breaks between blocks of studies preferably at the minimum once a hour. Another alternative is to chew gum. Research has shown that chewing gum may improve your memory by up to 35 percent (Conner, M. 2004). Choose the best environment that will have a positive impact on your concentration level so that you can do your best and retain as much information as possible.
I have listed the three main categories of learning styles above. Learning styles vary for each and every individual and may change depending on the situation. By comprehending and understanding each style you will be able to understand your own weaknesses and strengthen them. Also understanding that not everyone has the same style and being able to adjust in order to help another person better understands what you are presenting to them is important.
Students will have improved memory if they chew gum in
and I am glad to have them in this class too. 4 List three different learning styles. If you have determined yours, please note it. Major three different learning styles are auditory, visual, and kinesthetic learning.
Some gum researchers have investigated whether it is the flavor of chewing gum that helps people retain and recall memories. This source of evidence explains if it’s the flavor of the gum that retain and recall memories. If people chew gum during learning, this may help them keep their attention on the material, and this may help them learn. This part of evidence explains how chewing gum during learning can keep their
Learning is defined as a permanent change in attitude or behaviour that occurs as a result of repeated experience (Sims & Sims, 1995). Understanding one’s learning style has many advantages as it can help one to identify the learning method or activities that can help to optimise the learning experience. It has been suggested that the importance of one’s learning style has been identified through studies and research on how one can maximise the potential for success and further learning development (Honey & Mumford, 2006). Learning styles are unique to each individual and are developed in childhood (Chase, 2001). We all have different personalities; therefore we all have preferred learning styles that suit us best. The way one learns depends on preference. Some learn by observing, listening and imitating others and draw conclusions from their experience. There are several factors that affect our learning style; for example, background, culture, religion and environment can have a major influence on one’s learning.
The theory of multiple intelligences by Howard Gardner focuses on how people have different kinds of minds and therefore “learn, remember, perform, and understand in different ways.” In the past students and people a like were restricted to only learning through the written or spoken word. Videos and pictures aided those who were visual learners, but the pictures needed to be printed and the videos needed to be purchased and obtained before. Now, however, any tool technology provides society with can be used to learn. There are apps on cellphones that enable students to create flashcards, there are tutorial videos on any subject imaginable on websites like Youtube, and there are texts, videos, and pictures on demand through any search
Abstract. The effect of chewing gum while studying and testing was investigated through this lab. Two trials were used. One trial tested subjects without gum and the other trial provided subjects with gum. Subjects were asked to read an informative narrative and then tested on the information included in the narrative after a short break.
A learning style is a way that a person adapts to learn a task. Learning styles were not used until the 1970’s. To evaluate a student’s learning style, several models, assessments and exams are used for interpretation. There are two types of students who use more than one learning style. There are some who use the learning style according to the situation. Others adapt different styles to process the information by different means .Though it takes them longer to put together information or prepare the subject, their knowledge become more thorough and they tend to have better understanding of the subject. According to VARK my learning
To determine the best way I learn, I carried out two different learning styles questionnaires online. One may find that they are not always categorised in a specific type rather they may have more than one learning preference. Firstly, the most commonly used Neil Fleming’s VARK model. Fleming believes that there are four different types of learner: Visual, Auditory, Reading/writing and Kinesthetic learners. The second model I tried out was Soloman-Felder Learning Styles and Strategies.
Auditory learners learn through listening. These learners tend to pay attention to lectures, tutorials, and group discussions to absorb the information. Auditory leaners focus on the textbook when it comes to studying or learning new material. If you read the material out loud, it allows you to better comprehend and grasp the information. It is helpful to engage in group discussions to talk among others about topics and concepts for a course.
“A learning style is a way of learning and refers to the way that you learn new information” (2). Most people have one preferred learning style and perform to a lesser standard when learning in a different style than what they’re used to. Nowadays, children are told to take a quiz in school to determine what their preferred learning style is, but after a few years, not many of these children remember what their preferred learning style is, or even if they do, they don’t apply it to their learning.
Would chewing gum help improve students focus and memory? Chewing gum can help you concentrate and improves your test scores.Dentists recommends patients to chew sugar-free gum. I think students should be allowed to chew gum in school.
Learning styles, as defined by Kitchie (2011), are ways learners learn factoring in cognitive and physiological responses to their own learning environment. One learning style highlighted in this course is the VARK learning style which looks at how a learner receives information and then, expresses that information. According to Kitchie (2011) the VARK learning style breaks learning preferences into four categories: visual, aural or oral, read/write, and kinesthetic or action learning.
Each person has his or her own style of learning. Learning styles include visual, auditory, and kinesthetic. In the questionnaire, I learned that I am very much a visual learner. This reflection will show what I have learned about my unique learning style and how understanding learning styles of the children I teach will be helpful as I become a teacher.
There are seven learning styles and techniques. The first kind of learner is a visual learner also known as a spatial, this is when someone prefers using pictures and images to understand a topic. The aural learner also known as the auditory-musical person, is a person who prefers using music or sound. There is the verbal learner or the linguistic person who prefers using words, both in speech and writing. Next is the physical learner also known as the kinesthetic learner, the preference of this learner would be using the body, hands, and sense of touch to learn. Following that would be the logical thinker or the mathematical person, who prefers using logic, reasoning and systems to learn. The social learner also known as the interpersonal learner is someone who prefers to learn in groups and with other people. This type of learning style can be great for student in the traditional classroom setting. Last there is the solitary learner or the intrapersonal person. This is someone who prefers to work alone and use self-study methods. This type of learner would best be fit in the online classroom setting. Knowing what type of learner, you are can be important in helping to improve the speed and quality of learning. It can help avoid putting a student in an awkward position. Learning styles can have a great impact on students just as much as the
Thought out our lives, we are faced with many different learning experiences. Some of these experiences have made a better impact than others. This can be attributed to everyone’s different multiple intelligences or learning styles. A persons learning style is the method though which they gain information about their environment. As a teacher, it is our responsibility to know these styles, so we can reach each of our students and use all of the necessary methods.
