Beginning the mid 1920s, Hollywood’s ostensibly all-powerful film studios controlled the American film industry, creating a period of film history now recognized as “Classical Hollywood”. Distinguished by a practical, workmanlike, “invisible” method of filmmaking- whose purpose was to demand as little attention to the camera as possible, Classical Hollywood cinema supported undeviating storylines (with the occasional flashback being an exception), an observance of a the three act structure, frontality, and visibly identified goals for the “hero” to work toward and well-defined conflict/story resolution, most commonly illustrated with the employment of the “happy ending”. Studios understood precisely what an audience desired, and accommodated their wants and needs, resulting in films that were generally all the same, starring similar (sometimes the same) actors, crafted in a similar manner. It became the principal style throughout the western world against which all other styles were judged. While there have been some deviations and experiments with the format in the past 50 plus ye...
The MPAA rating system is outdated. The recent advances in technology allow children to see movies regardless of the rating. The rating system worked well for the early years, but recently “kids slip into the movies they want to see. . . . They also see them at home on widely available DVDs, on cable, and via popular streaming services like Netflix and Amazon” (Ebert 2). Even when kids go to the theater to see movies they can “theater hop” or buy a ticket to a low rated movie and slip into the R rated film of their choice. DVDs and the Internet both provide ways for kids to watch movies that contain objectionable material. Websites that offer the o...

Until 1996, American horror films had become disgustingly sad, desperately looking for a kick-start, yawn-filled predictability was the best we could expect. Then finally, we were able to leap out of our seats and gawp at Scream. It’s witty, clever, dangerous and fresh. With that giving hope to the horror movie genre, it was adhered by an amazing sequel.

According to George Lucas, the supreme liar, there is only one type of moviegoer. As usual, George Lucas is incorrect. There are actually three types of moviegoers. They are the romance type, the comedy type, and the sci-fi type.
At a time when the stalker movie had been exploited to all ends and the image of mute, staggering, vicious killers had been etched into society’s consciousness to the point of exhaustion, a new kid entered the block. The year was 1984 and it was time for a new villain to enter into the horror genre. A villain that was agile, intelligent, almost inviolable yet viscous, and by all means deadly. A Nightmare on Elm Street introduced the distinctive presence of Fred Krueger to the horror industry and to the audience. Freddy Krueger took the center stage and with him a new era of horror films began. This horribly scarred man who wore a ragged slouch hat, dirty red-and-green striped sweater, and a glove outfitted with knives at the fingers reinvented the stalker genre like no other film had. Fred Krueger breathed new life into the dying horror genre of the early 1980’s.

Overall, Friday the 13th (Marcus Nipsel, 2009) is a typical slasher film according to Carol Clovers book Men, Women, and Chainsaws: Gender in the Modern Horror Film. With the male antagonist killer, the Final Girl, and the use of weapons and killing styles, the 2009 remake of Friday the 13th suggests that Carol Clover’s ideas about slasher films have stayed the same throughout the years of horror slasher films.

The film follows a group of friends who fall victim to a family of cannibals while on their way to visit an old homestead. Although it was marketed as a true story to attract a wider audience and as a subtle commentary on the era's political climate, its plot is entirely fictional; however, the character of Leatherface and minor plot details were inspired by the crimes of real-life murderer Ed Gein, similar to Psycho’s Norman Bates and Silence of the Lamb’s Buffalo Bill. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is without a doubt a horror movie. It features a group of friends traveling through the Texas state to a homestead belonging to the family of one of the group. Along the way, they pick up a hitchhiker who proves to be more than they bargained for, so they ditch him. The group separates at the homestead and two lovers plan to go to a waterhole, but find it dried up. The two characters then hear a generator running in the distance and follow the sound to a house where they intend to ask for gas as their vehicle is running low on fuel. It is here that Leatherface makes his first appearance, bashing one of the character’s head in with a hammer, and kidnapping the other. Soon enough, final girl Sally, portrayed by Marilyn Burns, is the last one standing and she is held at the mercy of an entire family of psychotic cannibals with Leatherface serving as the muscle-bound slave of
