A study that was supported by a grant from the Spencer Foundation on American culture from adolescence through midlife. The adolescents were mostly in school full-time, the emerging adults were working full time or were working and in school, and young-to-midlife adults were working full-time. A proportion of the participants who were married or had children varied with age. The participants filled out a questionnaire that had 38 questions and the participants were asked to indicate whether you thought the following must be achieved before a person can be considered an adult by checking yes or no. The subscales included individualism, family capacity, norm compliance, biological transitions, Legal/ Chronological transitions, and role transitions. With the data they collected they created a correlation with the adolescents vs emerging adults vs young to midlife.
The approach of the research was developmental. They were trying to figure out what each age group considered about the transition to adulthood.
In the text, “Many college students today are unsure about whether they are adolescents or adults, since they feel mature in some respects but immature in others” (Steinburg 74). In the research they found out that more college students say that they are an adult, because they have to be independent. Steinburg states: “The existence of emerging adulthood may have a lot to do with values and priorities and not just the economy” (Steinburg 75). In the research they put those into consideration during their study that they did and they believe that it does play a role, making them emerge into adulthood. In the text it says, “Today, the transition between childhood and adulthood takes longer than it did in the past century” (Steinburg 88).
