In the article “ H.S. Dropouts Say Lack of Motivation Top Reason to Quit ”Catherine Gewertz informs and attempts to persuade the readers of understanding why High school students dropout of school and the impact it has on the students. In the article Catherine Gewertz introduces Bob Wise and he talks about his expert opinion and his viewpoint about the situation. Catherine Gewertz states “Bob Wise, the former West Virginia governor who is now the president of the Washington - based Alliance for Excellent Education , which has studied the dropout problem , said he believes the complaints about boring classes mask the real issue : the need for work on teenagers reading comprehension.”Underneath the frustration of a lot of these kids is an adolescent …show more content…
writes the text “Graduates can’t Master's college Text” to help Catherine Gewertz understand how students are graduating if they can’t master college text . Act Inc states “ A separate new study by ACT Inc supports the idea that a lack of reading proficiency is a widespread problem among high school students , even those aspiring to college . If the students can’t master college text in high school how are they supposed to succeed in college . If the students didn’t understand the text and the school let them graduate then the school is setting up the students for failure. The teachers aren’t paying attention either because they are the ones who are grading the students on how well they interpreted the text. The school and the teachers are not thinking enough for those high school students if they let them graduate high school . High school students should know how to master college text and if they don’t then it is either there not trying hard enough in there classes and there just being lazy or the don’t understand it and they need help . But those who graduated and they did master college text then they are the ones who are going to have a harder time in college …show more content…
The author states “High school dropouts interviewed for a study released last week were far more likely to say they left school because they were unmotivated , not challenged enough , or overwhelmed by trouble outside of school than because they were failing academically”. The students that were failing academically could have been failing because of the way the teachers were teaching or because they weren’t trying hard enough in there classes to get good grades. If the students were overwhelmed by troubles outside of school then they should have talked to a counselor . The students that were not challenged enough could have told their parents or talk to someone in the office to get switch to harder classes . If the class isn’t hard enough for the students they should tell someone instead just staying in the class because then it would be too easy for them . If the students are unmotivated in there classes then either the class is really boring or it very hard and they just didn’t want to do the work . Another reason they could be unmotivated is because the teachers don’t make sure they do there homework or that teachers don’t ask for the work
This makes the paper very ineffective because to parents and other adults, these facts would not apply to them. His article has the potential to become much more effective if he also targets parents, teachers, and counselors because those adults are major influences in a student’s life. If he targets the teachers and counselors, they can start teaching the students that it is okay not to go to college. By integrating this idea into the school systems, the social norm would begin to change and many employers would possibly start looking more closely into the individual potential employees, not just their
For some students it is difficult to get a good education. These students live in a poor community and are required to go to schools that have a low graduation rate. These schools have a certain reputation such that other students refer to it as the “ghetto school”, “where the pregnant girls go”, and the “dropout factory”. This
According to the National Dropout Prevention Center, dropping out of school is a persistent problem that causes much interference within our current educational systems efficiency(Why students drop out 1). If a student drops out because of something that happens
According to Leonhardt, many people who drop out usually plan to go back eventually to get their degrees, but very few actually do. According to “Access to Attainment”, approximately 65% of all job openings will require postsecondary education by the year 2020 and “many of the long-standing programs and policies designed to foster access no longer supports the needs of today’s students” (Miller, et al. 5). The availability of higher education to the public has greatly changed over time, and thus the system and the programs must adapt as well to continue providing the best access and opportunities possible to individuals. “….a college education matters much more now than it once did” (Leonhardt). Lower-class students coming from low-income high schools might not have the same opportunities for learning as their upper-class counterparts, and as a result they are less likely to be accepted to elite universities. The education system is beneficial for many but it is flawed as well, especially in preparing high schoolers for college, which has the potential to greatly impact their
Mary Sherry talks about students who failed or just got by in school in the article “In Praise Of the F Word”. The fear of failing will only get people as far as they are willing to go if they are truly trying to better themselves it makes sense that failing would be a motivator. On the other hand, some people don’t care at all and failing is just part of their vocabulary. Mary reflects on how “high-school graduates and drop outs pursuing graduate-equivalency certificates will learn the skills they should have learned in school”. (1) For a lot of people the realization comes after they are out of school and realize that one of the only ways to move up and make more money is more education. Failing is only as affective as someone makes it the more serious someone takes failing the higher their chances of getting higher grades.
The article I chose to analyze is “Is College for Everyone?” In today’s society, everyone would say that education is the key to success. People would say that a person would not get far without having some form of a degree. In reality, college is just not for everyone.
Do you ever feel like you want to just give up? In the video Dropout Nation there are a few students who don’t care anymore about how their lives go.That’s a problem, you see we all have something to look forward to in life. If we didn’t then most likely none of us would be here.Let’s go further into our topic we have here with us.
Society pushes today's youth towards higher education. The goal of grade school is to prepare the students for middle school. The goal of middle school is to prepare the students for high school. And finally the goal of high school is to prepare the students for college. The entire structure of education is to prepare youth for the next level of education. The problem with this system is that not all students are college material, as seen in the essay The Case Against College by Caroline Bird.
How does dropping out of high school affects students’ lives in the future? Students’ dropping out has become a crisis, President Obama said, “It’s time for all of us to come together parents and students, principals, and teachers, business leaders and elected officials to end America’s dropout crisis” (“ President Obama”). There are 7 thousand students’ that drop out of high school that adds up to about 1.2 million each year, wouldn’t it be nice to drop that number and help kids stay in school instead of dropping out of high school(“ President Obama”). Students’ shouldn’t drop out of high school because they couldn’t go to college, couldn’t hold down a job, and would struggle making minimum wage for the rest of their life.
First of all, many high school graduates cannot handle college. Isabel V. Sawhill and Stephanie Owen describe college as a place, “one can obtain a traditional four-year bachelor’s degree”. The work load outside of the classroom could be compared to working a full time job. For example, if a student is enrolled in four college courses and is in class a minimum of four hours the student should spend at least four to six hours of studying. This may be extremely agitating and stressful to a student that is not good at studying. The new college student may realize that the schoolwork is too much for him to handle and instead drop out. In Pharinet’s blog post, Is College for Everyone? He states that “…it is estimated that in the U.S., approximately 50% of students who begin college never graduate. There exist students who are not yet ready for the academic and financial challenges of college. There exist students who do not have the desire for college or learning.” This statement is important because if 50% of students that begin college never gradua...
The rhetorical situation that triggered Velez’s research is that most college students do not even graduates within the four years they are in college. As Velez dug deeper to the problem he noticed that most people do not even apply to college once they get out of high school anyway. Velez’s research goes into details as to why college students drop out of college. The thesis Velez’s comes to knowledge is that we should try to figure out what types of students’ drop out of college. This article was written on January of 2014; it was one of Velez’s very own articles that he submitted in school. The article begins about talking about how even college students attending a two-year college may not have be that very successful. As well as there is a small percentage that college students will even make it into their third year of college. Velez’s quoted that “students make their decision to enter college based on limited information,” emphasizing that most students do not even review college brochures or website before attending the university (Velez 1). Velez admits that some of data information may be based of basis information, but it should give a visual picture of what causes college dropouts to happen before most students receive their bachelor’s degree. In further research Velez made a diagram of students who never attended college, dropped out of two-year college, dropped out of a four-year college, graduated from a two-year college, and those he graduated from a four-year college. His research was based on the person demographics, geographic, family, and achievements. Velez uses his data graph to analyze his research a little further, “For example, instead of excluding students whose family income is missing, we include a variable for missing family income information, and
Bloom, Dan. "Helping High School Dropouts Improve Their Prospects." The Brookings Institution. N.p., Spring 2010. Web. 04 Nov. 2013.
Every 26 seconds one of our kids drops out of high school, that's 1.3 million students each year. The main reason for dropping out, the failure to succeed. Society puts an insurmountable amount of pressure on these kids to succeed, however this can actually be extremely detrimental to the students and children.
Teens today face a lot of pressure. Many students deal with difficult life situations that hinder them from focusing on their futures. This can lead to a loss of interest in school and school events, such as a sports, clubs, or after school programs. Teens start to prioritize other things over their education. Every year, over 1.2 million students will leave school without earning a high school diploma in the United States alone (“11”). That’s a student every 26 seconds – or 7,000 a day (“11”). The United States, which used to have the highest graduation rates of any country, now ranks 22nd out of 27 developed countries (“11”). Students may not realize that by dropping out of high school they are more likely to commit crimes, become parents at a young age, use and abuse alcohol and drugs, and live in poverty (“Drop”). Dropouts make up the majority of those
The authors explain that the students have to pay for much more than the tuition of school. They also state that the students should only be focusing on school and not where they are going to put their head down tonight, or if they will be able to eat today. Goldrick and Broton explain that the help the students are getting is not enough. Then they state that the help students get is microscopic compared to what the student actually need. Goldrick- Rab and Broton explain that without a education passed high school it is going to be very difficult for one to get a job within the next few years. The students need to be able to focus on their education so they can have a good future, but they also need the financial back to be able to focus on
