Have you ever had a moment in life when it felt like school is just too much right now? Somewhere in America everyday an individual is dropping out of college due to the workload put on them. Statistics shows that 30% of college and university students drop out after their first year. Yearly the numbers go up during the college period. We all know that not having money, workload, and lack of support in college are reasons why most students dropout of college. Along with family problems and just the responsibility of being in college can make someone want to drop of college. The rhetorical situation that triggered Velez’s research is that most college students do not even graduates within the four years they are in college. As Velez dug deeper to the problem he noticed that most people do not even apply to college once they get out of high school anyway. Velez’s research goes into details as to why college students drop out of college. The thesis Velez’s comes to knowledge is that we should try to figure out what types of students’ drop out of college. This article was written on January of 2014; it was one of Velez’s very own articles that he submitted in school. The article begins about talking about how even college students attending a two-year college may not have be that very successful. As well as there is a small percentage that college students will even make it into their third year of college. Velez’s quoted that “students make their decision to enter college based on limited information,” emphasizing that most students do not even review college brochures or website before attending the university (Velez 1). Velez admits that some of data information may be based of basis information, but it should give a visual picture of what causes college dropouts to happen before most students receive their bachelor’s degree. In further research Velez made a diagram of students who never attended college, dropped out of two-year college, dropped out of a four-year college, graduated from a two-year college, and those he graduated from a four-year college. His research was based on the person demographics, geographic, family, and achievements. In recent discussions of education, a controversial issue has been whether or not to go to college after high school. On the one hand, some argue that starting your career after high school is the smart thing to do. On the other hand, however, others argue that the smarter decision would be to continue your schooling by going to college to get a degree. In sum, then, the issue is whether or not college is the right decision for you. My own view is that you should go to college because it helps you build character, start a tradition, and gives you experience.
Less than two-thirds of those who start college in America finish. According to “Access to Attainment”, approximately 65% of all job openings will require postsecondary education by the year 2020 and “many of the long-standing programs and policies designed to foster access no longer supports the needs of today’s students” (Miller, et al. 5). In my community, El Sereno, college is viewed as an option as opposed to it being the next step in life. Most people in my area either begin working or start a family after they graduate from high school. Not always by choice, but in some cases by circumstance. Students in my neighborhood either lack the knowledge, financial support, guidance or even legal status that would otherwise drive them to apply or even go to college. It seems as though the majority of college students these days aren’t looking to further their education because it’s what they really want, they do it to please their parents, to be accepted by society, or because there’s nothing else for them to do (Bird, 372). First of all, many high school graduates cannot handle college. Isabel V. Sawhill and Stephanie Owen describe college as a place, “one can obtain a traditional four-year bachelor’s degree”. The work load outside of the classroom could be compared to working a full time job. For example, if a student is enrolled in four college courses and is in class a minimum of four hours the student should spend at least four to six hours of studying. This may be extremely agitating and stressful to a student that is not good at studying. The new college student may realize that the schoolwork is too much for him to handle and instead drop out. It is important to find the means to prevent these students that are victimized by skyrocketing tuition from dropping out, and encourage all incoming high school seniors to continue their education. The reality is that the rise in college tuition is no longer affordable for the average American household. Parents cannot afford to pay for their children’s tuition on their incomes and students are very often forced to enroll part-time in order to have the time to get a job to pay for college. This very often causes a decrease in these students GPA and consequently increases the number of dropouts in the long run. Other times, it will take these students double the time to complete their degrees.
Thousands of dollars for college tuition; thousands of dollars for textbooks and materials, the cost just keeps building up! Students going through high school right now do not have the experience of having to actually pay for school. Often enough, colleges and universities require students to pay hefty prices to attend their schools and leads the hole in our pockets to become deeper and deeper. To change this problem, public colleges and universities should not require tuitions and school materials to be fiscal problems for students. Starting college is an intense and confusing event that plagues all recent high school graduates. It is like trying to run when all you can do is crawl, and for many freshmen, myself included, one can get easily overwhelmed by the daunting task of picking a major when less than two months ago some of our parents still packed our lunches for us every morning. The concept of entering college tends to be frequently skewed and expecting an eighteen year old to decide what they want to do for the rest of their lives, without having them actually experiment in different areas, has the potential to create a generation of adults who are aggravated and depressed in their careers.
However, dropping out of college is not always negative, in fact, familiar problems can yield positive results. In terms of financial support we know that college costs money, so a lot of students cannot afford it. For example, there are families were the parents are divorced, and one parent has to burden all the family expenses. Since the early 70s theorists have pondered the causes of college dropout. Generally referred to as “student attrition,” this problem has spurred numerous causal theories and theoretical models. Vincent Tinto led the research with his revolutionary 1973 study, which he later revised (1987) amid criticism from other luminaries in the field, most notably Bean, Astin, Terenzini, and Pascarella. It is on the work of these scholars (including also Tinto) that all modern research in the student attrition field is based. I found and will review in brief some of the extensive research from Tinto to the present, including the basic criticisms therein. I will further explain the steps some colleges are currently taking to counteract this increasingly important issue.
