What Makes a Good Leader? Tobacco contributes to a high rate of preventable diseases and death. As a result, the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) works tirelessly in the fight against tobacco use. For the CDC to successfully reduce the number of tobacco-related diseases and death, strong leadership must occur. There are numerous skills that make individuals good leaders, such as having good communication skills and commitment to see projects through. In addition, successful leadership entails having motivational skills, integrity, flexibility, and the ability to collaborate with others. Being a leader is often challenging. Therefore, utilizing my leadership strengths and determining ways to manage challenges is important.

Optimal leaders engage members by using collaborative skills. Allowing members to collaborate and take on leadership roles offers a sense of confidence which in turn, helps members feel appreciated and valued for their work efforts. As a leader, utilizing motivational skills is also important. Engaging members of the coalition motivates the members, as they are able to provide strategies, set goals and achieve them (Ali, 2012). Throughout the leadership process, there may be situations that are particularly challenging. When this occurs, it is important for leaders to utilize flexibility skills. For example, reducing tobacco use presents challenges because tobacco products are heavily marketed. Therefore, leaders must discover ways to counteract the strategies used by tobacco companies by engaging the community and discovering ways to change how products are marketed, sold, and utilized (Butler, et al., 2014).

In the future, I plan to change this challenge into a strength by prioritizing tasks and focusing on the human element of the job. I believe the human service profession is rewarding and I will be able to stay motivated by focusing on the rewarding qualities of this profession. Integrity in the workplace is vital to the success of organizations. I believe I possess integrity because I put into practice and understand that successful leaders model integrity by being honest and doing what is right regardless of circumstances. Lack of respect and trust occurs when leaders lack integrity. Furthermore, lack of integrity can cause a reduction in workplace morale because integrity is an important aspect of who we are and how we treat others. I have often viewed flexibility in the workplace as being challenging and something connected to inconvenience. For example, in the past, work-related flexibility met having to change work hours which was inconvenient for me but proved to be beneficial to the organization. Flexible leaders must focus on the needs of the agency. Therefore, to change this challenge into a strength, it is necessary for me to change my perspective and understand that being flexible means having to make changes which often results in high productivity and a successful outcome for the
