The local labour market
Whilst looking into the local labour market, I have decided to study
some of the figures from the national statistics and look into how WPA
would use them if they needed to recruit new employees both locally
and nationally.
Resident population and age
The resident population of west Somerset, as measured in the 2001
census, was 35,075, of which 47 percent were male and 53 percent were
female.
The majority of the population in west Somerset are aged 30 to 59 with
38.3 percent of the population being in this age group. This is
slightly less than the percentage of 41.5 percent in the age group of
30 to 59 in England and Wales. .6 percent of people in west Somerset
and aged 16 to 19 compared to 4.9 percent of people in England and
Wales. There is a very minimal difference, therefore if WPA wanted 16
to 19 year olds as they have just finished school and may be going
into full time or part time work, west Somerset has almost the same
percentage of this age group.
If WPA wanted school leavers they could look locally and have the same
number of people on average from that age group.
Health and provision of care
In west Somerset, 64.7 percent of people asked said they would
describe their health as good, this is only slightly less than the
percentage of people in England and Wales with 68.6 percent. In west
Somerset however 25.5 percent of people would describe their health as
fairly good this is higher than the national average of 22.2 percent.
West Somerset had a higher percentage of people who had a long-term
illness with 22.3 percent, the national average is 18.2 percent.
If WPA were to use this information they could see that 90.2 percent
of people in West Somerset said they had good or fairly good health,
but 90.8 percent of people as a national average said they had good or
fairly good health, this tells WPA that people living in Somerset have
good health so they would have a very large selection of people living
in Somerset who have a good or fairly good health to choose from, they
could therefore attempt to recruit locally then if they are
unsuccessful they can then recruit nationally where there is only 0.6
percent more people who said they had good or fairly good health.
Economic activity – unemployment
Unemployment rates are lower with 2.9percent in West Somerset compared
to a national average of 3.4 percent. This means that there may not be
a large selection of qualified people in the West Somerset area so WPA
The document I chose was Document 19-1 titled ‘A Textile Worker Explains the Labor Market’. This document is the testimony of Thomas O’Donnell given before the U.S. Senate Committee on Relations between Labor and Capital in the year 1885. O’Donnell speaks about what it’s like to be a labor worker in the 1880s to a committee so they could better understand the relationship between labor and capital. The Gilded Age saw the rise of industrialism and great economic growth in the United States. But true to its title, the Gilded Age was only plated with gold but inward filled with corruption and poverty. What meant great success for some, meant lack of job security and financial hardship for the working class Americans. This document really depicts what it’s like being on the working end of these companies seeking to industrialize.

The Policies Used to Create Employment in Declining Areas in the United Kingdom This question means to state the government law used to make employment in areas in the UK that have no employment, reasons for this is because that area was declining. When an area is deteriorating or declining the people move out because there is no employment and they want a good quality of life. The British government have tried to encourage industries to locate to declining areas, Areas that have high unemployment i.e. Scotland, Birmingham and Leeds. When an area is declining the crime rates go up because of no employment. The government does not want this therefore they have introduced several government policies to try and prevent this from happening.
This report does a fairly comprehensive job on educating the public to the definition of stem cells, describing them as “a diverse group of remarkable multipotent cells that are relatively undifferentiated and unspecialized cells of the body.” Stem cells have the capacity for unlimited self-renewal and the possibility to produce differentiated descendant cell types. The main in...

Stem cell research has been around for some time, and many people have been cured from certain diseases because of it. Many scientists observe that embryonic stem cells are easier and flexible to use than adult stem cells Adult cells are diseased curable cells as well to a certain extent because they are taken from certain tissues that are already established in an area of the body. Stem cell research has long ways to go for scientists to be able to use them to cure all cancers, infectious diseases, and other health problems however stem cells are on the path of changing the world.
Stem cells are an ongoing research project in which new discoveries are being made about them, and researchers are learning how to use them in new ways. The three current kinds of stem cells all prove to have their own challenges when it comes to using them. The important thing is finding out which stem cell is right for the patient and how much of an ethical concern there is when it comes to using the stem cell. As we learn the best way to use them and they become more popular in the medical field, stem cells will become a new weapon in the fight against certain diseases.

Over the past years, stem cell research has been very famous through the scientific community and the media. Stem cells are pluripotent cells that are present in every single organism on Earth. The power of stem cells are beyond imagination. Stem cells have the power to turn into any type of cells. Some examples are, blood cells, nerves, cardiac muscles, and the list goes on and on. The scientific community has recently taken a large interest in stem cells. They have used stem cells to treat horrible misfortunes that people have been diagnosed with. Some examples of the diseases that are being treated by the use of stem cells are, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, spinal cord issues, strokes, diabetes, damaged organs, and even cancer! However, despite the infinite potential for medical treatments, the topic of stem cells is surrounded by enormous amounts of controversy. The questions that feed the controversy are about how the stem cells are acquired and about how the gained knowledge would be used. However, it is necessary for mankind to keep stem cell research alive in order to save lives while taking care of any unethical topics about it.
The essay will be looking at , poverty, employment and unemployment, poor diets as determinants of health in this context amongst other factors such as housing, mental health, social support network, education, culture, individual behaviours, genetics, gender because they have the best documented evidence on research in health inequalities in Britain available in the Black Report (DHSS 1980; Townsend, Davidson and Whitehead, 1992), Acheson Report (Acheson 1998), and FairSociety, HealthyLives Report, and other academic sources.
Diversity within a company will benefit the company’s bottom line and help the company to keep the competitive edge (McCuiston, et. al., 2004). Improving the bottom line can be also be improved by retaining employees and improving customer service (McCuiston, et. al., 2004). So utilizing a diverse work group is very rewarding for the companies who implemented it correctly. The profitability that the company will see may not be seen on the front end, but the long term results will yield a better profit for the company by helping to reduce turnover rates, improving employee morale, and the recruitment of new
This is a community profile that aims to identify a specific health improvement issue within a geographically local community. A community profile is an attempt to describe a particular community or neighbourhood. It uses a variety of different techniques to build up a picture of the community from a number of perspectives’ (Barnardos.org.uk, 2004) including several components of a community such as its demographic characteristics, patterns and trends i.e. its epidemiology in order to make comparisons between different localities to determine areas needful of specific health improvements with the goal of improving local people’s health and reducing health inequalities. A core definition of community as distinguished by Macqueen and Mclellan et al (2001) is ‘a group of people with diverse characteristics who are linked by social ties, share common perspectives, and engage in joint action in geographical locations or settings’. The purpose of community profiling is to identify and understand health-related issues, inequalities and needs within a community; with the intention of determining the factors that influence people’s health and wellbeing within that given community in order to highlight gaps in provision to contribute towards making positive health improvements and improving the quality of life of the community.
Diversity in the workplace is very important in today’s global workforce because workers in the economy all over the world are currently made up of many different ethnicities, varied cultures, beliefs, and backgrounds. People that are involved in management such as managers, and supervisors could greatly benefit from being accustomed to diversity in the workplace because their job entails dealing with a multicultural work environment on a daily basis. Knowing how to handle diversity in the workforce and having the necessary skills for supervisors would be beneficial not only to them but also to the success of the company and economy because a strong, diversified workforce will create a more “creative, innovative, and productive workforce.” (Kerby, 2012).
The changing labour market makes it difficult to determine the size of the applicant pool for the position. However as seen in the Household Labour Force Survey, 2016 March quarter (Statistics New Zealand, 2016) there were around 163,400 people currently employed in the Agriculture, forestry and fishing industry. Obviously not all of these people will have the right qualifications or experience for the position but it gives NatureCare a good idea of what they are working with. To narrow it down, they can look at what different universities in New Zealand offer. The University of Canterbury has the only university department in NZ to offer professional forestry degree programs, so a forestry graduate from UC would be a very suitable candidate, as the incumbent is required to hold a water or forestry qualification. There are around 200 Biological Science (forestry’s category) graduates from UC each year which gives them another idea of the possible size of the labour market. A potential difficulty could be locating where these graduates ended up, however effective advertising, and even contact with the university may help attract these graduates. According to the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, the unemployment rate has slightly increased this quarter. (Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment, 2016) A higher unemployment rate usually involves more people applying for jobs, making it slightly easier on employers, if they can easily screen unsuitable candidates. The first big decision when recruiting is whether to do it internally, externally or both. Internally involves promoting someone who is already employed by the business, ...
Increasing globalization needs more interaction among people from diverse cultures, beliefs, and backgrounds. Developing and enhancing on workplace diversity has become an important issue of management today.
