A Comparison of “The Labor of Laziness” and “The Too Perfect Paraphrase” Plagiarism is a serious problem. Donald McCabe (Rutgers University) found that “In a survey of 24,000 students at 70 high schools, 95 percent said they participated in some form of cheating, whether it was on a test, plagiarism or copying homework"(qtd. in “Plagiarism”). It is important to know the types of Plagiarism to avoid plagiarism. A citation has to be used when borrowing ideas or words from other author's sources. For example, use quotes, paraphrase, and use existing ideas and so on (“What”). In the case of “The Labor of laziness”, the writer paraphrases the sources of other authors, so if the writer use citation, the writer avoids plagiarism. one cause of plagiarism may be that “Students may have poor time-management skills or they may plan poorly for the time and effort required for research-based writing, and believe they have no choice but to plagiarize” (“Causes”). They need to research a lot of information to get original work, if so they avoid plagiarism easily. According to Avoiding Plagiarism, “Paraphrasing is often defined as putting a passage from an author into your own words.” (“Successful”), and when students borrow sentences "word-for-word" from other sources, they have to use quotation (“What is”), so if the writer borrows another author's sentences, they need paraphrase and quote.
