“The plagiarists Tale” is an article about Quentin Rowan a man that went by the pen name Q. R. Markham. He wrote “assassin of secrets” a spy novel, after the publication of the novel James Bond fans found many similarities between the two. After further investigation results showed Quentin has plagiarized using many different novels as example. After word got out to the public the publishing company was infuriated and instantly took the novel off bookstore shelves. He said “I wish I could do it all over” he regretted everything he did. What does it mean for a book to have paratext(s)? Before, I took this class I had no idea what the word even met. According to A. Leverkuhn and Andrew Jones, paratext “is any additional text or other reference material that is added to an author’s published work.” For this assignment I got the opportunity to look at the book, The Educational Blue Book and Directory Church of the Brethren and it used a variety of different forms of paratexts in the beginning of the book along with the end of the book. Personally, I believe that paratexts this book used was extremely beneficial and made the book complete, without the paratexts I think that the book would have been easily misinterpreted.
One aspect of the creative industry that has remained the same throughout generations is the difficulty for artists to inject their work into popular culture. We are in our second journal entry and now adding chapter 3 to the other 2 chapters read before. After reading the chapters from the previous journal entry again, it opens doors and thoughts about other important topics that I might not have noticed when I read it before. Chapter 1 talked about writing and how writing effects our thoughts and process. Chapter 2 talked about annotation and journals and how journaling can help us as writers. In this journal, we added chapter 3 as well which talks about paraphrasing. Paraphrasing is something that not everyone knows how to do well, so I believes writing this journal and actually putting all the chapters together will give us a better understand of the topics overall and about paraphrasing.
During the course of this class, I have had the opportunity to read literature from authors who come from different backgrounds and places in the world. Some of the stories and poetry we read were straight forward while others were confusing and sometimes required a second look. But one thing is clear, it changed the way I think about literature in a few ways that I wasn’t expecting. Three works in particular stand out in my mind. “ I Wont Let You Go” by Rabindranath Tagore, “To New York” by Leopold Senghor, and Pedro Peramo by Juan Rulfo all had an impact on my thinking for similar yet different reasons. They all incorporate their cultural backgrounds into their work through the setting of their pieces. They also compose their pieces in a way that makes you want to research their history to find the deeper meaning. Finally, a couple of the authors write about things they are emotionally connected to. Some of the examples we will look at, really opened my eyes to going beyond a superficial understanding of literature.
Human language is a fascinating enigma throughout our history. As far as my memory goes, how various forms of communication happen in our society and improve our life condition invoked my interests.
