With the development of civilization and written languages came the need for more frequent and reliable methods of communication allowing messages to reach longer distances. This was essential to the control of trade and other affairs between nations and empires.
Early man used cave walls as the media on which messages could be transcribed, this was common for many years, until the Egyptians discovered a special kind of rush (Papyrus) that could be woven to form a portable writing material. In about 105AD the Chinese discovered a way to make a similar substance from wood pulp.

I was a little let down by this very engaging book by Dr. Burns. Not because of the plethora of information, research, and insight into youth ministry. Simply, as I had just finished two great books on building youth ministries by Doug Fields Your First two Years in Youth Ministry and Mark DeVries Sustainable Youth Ministry. Both of the above books were published after the eminent work of Dr. Burns. Fields and Devries books I read before Dr. Burns Uncommon Youth Ministry. Do not get me wrong, all three books are very pertinent and applicable in their own way to growing and maintaining a vibrant and health youth ministry. What did pique my interest in Mr. Burns’ book, was how he pointed out three key elements in growing youth ministry. Acceptance, validation, and empowerment of the youth of today.
The printing press was invented in 1453. The movable printing technology was invented in China in 1040 but Johannes Gutenberg was able to perfect this technology by creating the Gutenberg printer in 1440. The printer was a movable type. A movable type was where individual blocks could be set up in order to print almost anything. Before this, wooden blocks, carved by hand were used to print things. These blocks would have consisted of what the individual wanted to print which would take an incredible amount of time. Gutenberg’s invention of a movable type printer established the ability for mass communication.
Verbal communication is the form of communication that the majority of the world uses today it’s expressed in spoken words. Non Verbal can be conveyed with a smile, frown, rolling of the eyes and in some case the wink of an eye. Facial expressions behavior plays a big part in non verbal communication. Our expression will say things to others that we want say out loud. Gestures are another form of non verbal such as pointing, crossing of the arms and clapping of the hands or all gestures that are non verbal. Appearance is often over looked when we think of non verbal communication. When see someone in boots, blue jeans, leather vest, and tattoos we assume that they are a biker that just one example appearance communication. Face to Face is a preferred method that is used to close the deal deals with body language 50%, tone of your voice 40% and your words 10%.
Interpersonal communication is one of skills that can make you a better communicate. It is a form of communication between one or more people. It is something we all do just by simply talking to somebody. Talking to people in and outside of school or work can help improve a relationship. Hopefully in my future, I will be able to not be as introverted with texting people as I am now. I could have improved more friendships in my past if I talked to more people. It can improve relationships with people because you are finding out more about them and talking to them more.
The invention of the printing press was one of the most useful technologies in history because it helped spread ideas, produced books, and greatly improved the economy. Johannes Gutenberg, who was a German goldsmith, developed the printing press “in Mainz, Germany between 1446 and 1450” (Ditttmar, 1133). The printing press was made to print books, newspapers, and flyers. The machine was made from wood and was based off screw presses, that worked with inked movable type heads that allowed the paper to be quickly and efficiently pressed with letters. The type head was made by pouring lead-tin alloy into a hand mold, along a rectangular stalk.
Up until this point, there was simply no way in which to communicate more quickly than the fastest horse or boat. The device relied on mechanical arms atop a tower on a hill that were positioned in a specific manner and a codebook for the corresponding messages. The system required a line of sight between transmission towers and there was a finite limit on the variety of messages that could be sent. At first it was used almost solely for military communication. This primitive method caught on quickly and transmission towers started popping up all over France and Europe.
Ultimately, how is youth ministry viewed? What is youth ministry’s societal perception, specifically, as an occupation or a service? A service is defined as “the action of helping or doing work for someone. An occupation is defined as “a job or profession.” However, youth ministry is a service focusing solely on the marrow of loving passionate teenagers, many trying to figure out who they are. Through my interview with First United Methodist Broken Arrow’s Youth Pastor, Paige Gaither, I observed her ministry as a service rather than an occupation because the nucleus of her ministry is people, and working with teenagers is physically draining, yet spiritually and emotionally renewing. With communication, there are many factors that could affect the interpretation of the message and its intentions. The one factor that is perceived as a difficult factor to analyze is demonstrative communication; nonverbal and nonwritten communication. Nonverbal communication transpires through tone, body language and facial expressions that occur during communication.
My first memory of touch comes from when I was roughly three years old. My family got our first dog, Max, after my siblings begged our parents for one. My first memory of touch was when I petted him for the very first time. The memory of petting my dog is very special to me because I care for dogs so much and I will always remember it because Max was my first dog. Cell phones have immensely changed the way people communicate today. A cell phone can be all a person need for interaction. From a cell phone, a person can make calls, send text messages, emails, and send and also receive directions, buy things online, do online banking, listen to music and much more. Since someone can do everything with one device, there is no longer a need to go around with multiple devices about. Greek hydraulic semaphore systems were used as early as the 4th century. The hydraulic semaphores, which functioned with water filled containers and visual signals, functioned as optical telegraphs. However, they could only apply a very limited range of pre-determined messages, and as with all such visual telegraphs could only be deployed during good visibility conditions. Experiments on communication using electricity was carried out in 1729 but was not successful. The experiment was proposed by William Fothergill Cooke. In 1837, William invented a practical electric telegraph which entered commercial use in 1838 (J. B. Calvert, May 2004). The first telephone was invented in 1878 by Alexander Graham Bell. He experimented with a ‘phonautograph’, it is a machine shaped like a pen that can draw shapes of sound waves on smoked glass by tracing vibrations.

Sinek (2016) goes on to say that millennials were dealt with failed parenting, they were told often that they were special, and that they could have anything they wanted in life all because they wanted it. Sinek (2016) also points out that this is another contributing factor why this generation is growing up with a lower self-esteem. Sinek (2016) continues to points out that millennials have an addiction to technology- mainly their phones. Sinek (2016) goes on to advocate that this is due to the hormone Dopamine which creates a pleasureful sensation to the brain, it is usually associated with drugs, money, and sex. Sinek (2016)
People in the present society have turned from the use of the old means of communication to the more advanced and technological ways of communicating. Technology has made it easier for people to communicate in a faster, efficient, and cost saving means through the introduction of the communication channels. The world has turned out to be the centre for technology with different technologies emerging daily as the people continue to develop from time to time to cope with the growing technology. The benefits of adopting the communication technology are explained in this article which shows why people do not function without technology.
The only means of communication was writing a letter or sending a telegram. The number of people one knew of was limited. At that time, one might not know the person living on the other side of the globe, but they did know who their neighbors were. They talked and interacted with each other and knew what others were going through. They communicated less, but communicated more.
