What does it mean for a book to have paratext(s)? Before, I took this class I had no idea what the word even met. According to A. Leverkuhn and Andrew Jones, paratext “is any additional text or other reference material that is added to an author’s published work.” For this assignment I got the opportunity to look at the book, The Educational Blue Book and Directory Church of the Brethren and it used a variety of different forms of paratexts in the beginning of the book along with the end of the book. Personally, I believe that paratexts this book used was extremely beneficial and made the book complete, without the paratexts I think that the book would have been easily misinterpreted.
When you first open the book you noticed the use of readership. The paratext used on the very first page is who the book belonged to, E. N. Goshorn along with certain family members related to the owner of the book. This page also had a date. I am assuming date was for when the book was received. This page did not seem feel like the same type of paper as rest of the book, it felt like a normal...
Before the book even begins there is a page which really helps to set the tone for the book. It also helps the reader to better understand the pages ahead.
Using quotes from the book would strengthen your paper. Quotes prove to the reader that you have a valid argument.

The small tan bound book covered by a canvas or burlap material has a small loop on one side, probably for a writing utensil, although there is no utensil found with the diary. The pages are lined with thin, horizontal blue lines and 3 vertical thin red lines, on on the left and two to the right sides of the page, although the entries pay no attention to
The first chapter of How to Read Novels like a Professor is called “ Pickup Lines and Open(ing) Seductions”. This chapter is about how imperative it is that the opening pages of the novel are persuasive. If the beginning of the novel does not entice the reader then they will not continue investing their time and energy into it. Even the very first line of a novel plays a major role in seducing the reader. The opening line is like a hook, it invites the reader in and gives them foresight on what is to come in the future. This chapter is also about how the first page of a novel can tell the reader everything they need to know to read it. The author does this by including the style, tone, mood, diction, point of view, narrative presence, narrative attitude, time frame, time
Delivery –The appearance of A Separate Peace is faded and has an old feel. The cover picture is of a brick building, which is supposed to be the boarding school that Gene attends in his youth. The font of the title is simplistic but reminds me of cursive as it has loops. The cover picture in addition to the color of the cover gives the book a faded, dated feel as if it was from the post WWI era.
Courtly readers threat all books with the most absolute respect. Courtly readers disapprove of misuse and physical abuse of books. They believe in conserving the state in which books are kept in perfect condition. On the other hand, Carnal readers are the complete opposite. To them, the printed text in the books hold more of an important value than the physical aspect of the book. Carnal readers write on textbooks, tear off pages, cause damage, hard use, and bend pages for page-marking instead of using bookmarks.
Chapter five tells you that there are many different types of the source other than books. The second section of chapter five tells us that there are two types of sources primary and secondary sources. A primary source is the originally writing from an individual. A secondary source comments on a primary source. It also talks about how you tell if a source is good for your paper. There was a chart to help you know the difference between quotation, paraphrase, and summary. At the end of this chapter talks about how to cite your work in different ways.

(“Why Books?” page 1) Last year, Books for Africa sent 10 sea containers to Africa. (“Got books” page 1) Each container can hold up to 22,000 books and each costs $9,800. (“Books from America” page 1) Books are like video games in Africa, kids love them. So, that is why this organization sends books. They don’t only send books to kids in Africa they send E books, which are electronic devices that allow you to download books to them and you read them off of there. (“E-books for Africa” page 1”) Which is great since they don't have many books and the books they have are usually...

Confusion about what it means to own a book leads people to a false reverence for paper, binding, and type - a respect for the physical thing - the craft of the printer rather than the genius of the author. They forget that it is possible for a man to acquire the idea, to possess the beauty, which a great book contain...
