The events in The Minister’s Black Veil, Young Goodman Brown, Ethan Brand, and Earth’s Holocaust, written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, shows an underlying association between man's hidden evil and secret sin. Nathaniel’s popular belief was that despite religion, secret sin and evil resides in the human heart. The concept of secret sin and evil are intertwined into something complex in Nathaniel Hawthorne’s stories mentioned above. A human being is not perfect therefor will commit an imperfection which Nathaniel would argue is generated by evil. Nathaniel Hawthorne relies principally on allegory while presenting symbolism to demonstrate the issues of secret sin and the root of evil.

The allegory behind The Minister’s Black Veil is consistent with the issue of secret sin and evil that resides in the human heart which one does not see in them. It describes the human capacity to disregard their own miss doings and judge others by their actions. This statement is presented when the reader is introduced to a pleasant scene in Milford, a small Puritan town where men, women, and children refine about enjoying the prospect of another Sunday but is shortly interrupted by the presence of Reverend Hooper who is now unexpectedly and mysteriously wearing a black veil that hangs from his forehead and covers his eyes and nose. This black veil becomes the symbolism of secret sin. "I can't really feel as if good Mr. Hooper's face was behind that piece of crape," said the sexton. "I don't like it," muttered an old woman, as she hobbled into the meeting-house. "He has changed himself into something awful, only by hiding his face." "Our parson has gone mad!" cried Goodman Gray, following him across the threshold.” [408] The townspeople instantly begin to gossip as quoted above; some say that he has gone wrathful, while others believe he is covering a shameful sin.
The Minister, however, acknowledges neither his own strange appearance nor the stunned and questioning whispering of the townspeople. As a preacher, Hooper delivers a sermon that was as powerful as the rest but, due to his veil, the people felt a certain sadness and mysteriousness in his words. Following the sermon, the townspeople continued to gossip about the mystery of the veil. Mr. Hooper continued to act as always, greeting the children and saluting his neighbors. But, he was met with bewildered looks as the crowd avoided him. As he turned, a sad smile crept from underneath his veil. At this point in the plot of The Minister’s Black Veil, there is a definite turn in the way the people of the town perceive their minister and is seen throughout the story such as in the setting of funeral and wedding. It is the uncertainty that makes the reaction of the townspeople all the more telling of their intrinsic sin and hypocritical nature. While speculating as to what horrific crime the minister must have committed, they overlook their own nature of sin, both large and minor. In times of need, the minister is the one who is willingly called upon, but circumvented when all is good. The townspeople shun him only because of a black veil and in doing so reveal how shallow and unappreciative their faith truly
is. But why shun him because of a veil? The veil serves as a mirror to both the minister himself and the townspeople of their own sins and the evil they behold within themselves. This could be seen when Reverend Hooper startles himself as he lifts the wine glass and sees his frightful reflection while giving a toast at a wedding. He himself is presented with the truth of his misdeed through the veil and is a constant reminder since he is reluctant to take it off. As the veil serves as a reflection of one’s own sin, the more aware the townspeople became of their own sinful nature, the more uncomfortable they become, and thus being around the minister and seeing his veil troubled them severely, even during happy times. When the friend shows his inmost heart to his friend; the lover to his best-beloved; when man does not vainly shrink from the eye of his Creator, loathsomely treasuring up the secret of his sin; then deem me a monster, for the symbol beneath which I have lived, and die! I look around me, and, lo! on every visage a black veil!” [415] In order for Nathaniel Hawthorne to conclude this piece of allegory he shows the reader Reverend Hooper’s final statement about what the veil has taught him. Hooper accuses the rest of the crowd, asking why they tremble at him alone. They conversed about his sin as if it were greater than their own, and as if in seeing his outward expression of sin, they could overlook their internal offenses. They are all hypocrites, as they all wear “black veils” and shield their eyes from God when they confide in others. Hooper dies and is buried with his black veil, his eyes forever covered taking with him the towns hidden sins and evil.
In Nathaniel Hawthorne’s short story “The Minister’s Black Veil”, the reader is introduced to Parson Hooper, the reverend of a small Puritan village. One Sunday morning, Hooper arrived to mass with a black veil over his impassive face. The townspeople began to feel uneasy due to their minister’s unusual behavior. When Parson appeared, “Few could refrain from twisting their heads towards the door; many stood upright….” (Monteiro 2). In wearing the veil Hooper presents the isolation that everybody experiences when they are chained down by their own sins. He has realized that everybody symbolically can be found in the shadow of their own veil. The gothic characteristics that are found in Edgar Allan Poe’s “The Fall of the House of Usher” and Nathaniel Hawthorne’s “The Minister’s Black Veil” delve into the dark side of the human mind where secret sin shrouds the main characters in self anguish and insanity. Both Poe and Hawthorne focus on how much of a burden hiding sins from people can be, and how the human mind grows weak and tired from carrying such a burden. Poe illustrates that with his perturbed character Roderick Usher who was rotting from the inside like his “mansion of gloom” (Poe 323). Hawthorne dives deep into the mind of one Mr. Hooper, a minister, a man admired by all, until he starts wearing a black veil to conceal his face because “ The subject had reference to secret sin” (Hawthorne 311) . Hooper delivers his sermon, which is about how everyone has a secret sin that acts as a barrier between themselves and the others around them, with a black veil covering his face, “each member of the congregation, the most innocent girl, and the man of hardened breast, felt as if the preacher had crept upon them, behind his awful veil, and discovered their hoarded iniquity of deed or thought.” (106). The message of his sermon, paired with the veil, causes the townspeople to feel as if Mr. Hooper can see their individual secret sins and expose them to the public, which, in a Puritanical society, makes one vulnerable to public punishment or ostracism by the community. Due to their fears of having their Christian facades shattered and their subsequent sinful natures revealed, the townspeople alienate the minister. This reflects hypocrisy in the sense that their fears come from knowing they are essentially living double lives, which causes more hypocritical behavior to arise in the form of treating their minister in quite the opposite way one should treat a human being, especially one who serves the church in such a high position. Furthermore, on his deathbed, Mr. Hooper points out the townspeople’s hypocrisy when he exclaims, “Why do you tremble at me alone? Tremble also at each other. . . .I look around me, and, lo! on every visage a Black Veil!” (118). Nathaniel Hawthorn was an American novelist and short story writer. He is also a very interesting writer to analyze due to the psychological complexity of his work. Most of his works feature moral allegories with a Puritan inspiration. His fiction works are considered part of the Romantic Movement and, more specifically, dark romanticism. His themes often center on the inherent evil and sin of humanity, and his works often have moral messages and deep psychological complexity. More specifically, in “The Minister´s Black Veil” and “Young Goodman Brown” these qualities and characteristics of his works are quite easy to see. In contrast with many other points of view and many other conclusions from different readers they might have after reading “The Minister´s Black Veil” and “Young Goodman Brown” the finality of this essay is to relate these two pieces of work from Hawthorn. These two works are impressively related one to each other, if the reader pays close attention to the message and understands the symbols in the story he will notice the similarities in the stories right away. After analyzing both allegories we can affirm that Hawthorn was trying to transmit and communicate through symbols the same messages in both stories but with a different approach. These messages were: the sinful nature of all men, the unstable puritan’s religion as it deceases in its religious conviction and becomes somewhat hypocritical and how a man (In both histories I believe he was referring to himself) can become a lonely and unhappy person after leaving it’s faith behind.
Nathaniel Hawthorne in “The Minister’s Black Veil” is able to show the hypocrisy and the overemphasis of the Puritan people and their beliefs by engaging the reader in this short story by using “a gentlemanly person” (409) who decides to start wearing a black veil over his face. As Milford’s finest gather on “the porch of [the] meeting house” (409) and enjoy the hope of another Sunday service, the townspeople’s sunny disposition and picturesque setting soon changes as Parson Hooper emerges with a “simple piece of crape” covering his face. This unusual appearance of the Reverend to the townspeople even has some of them feeling faint and forcing some women “of delicate nerves to leave the service” (410). Even though Parson Hooper’s demeanor and his polite and gracious behavior is the same as always, and his preaching is much more interesting and entertaining, the townspeople perceive their minister far differently. As Parson Hooper continues to don the veil, people start to stare at him and rumors begin to fly, especially since his sermon dealt with the topic of secret sin. As the people make him a social pariah, Parson Hooper becomes a representation of hidden sin and an object of dread. Even as death knocks on his door, Parson Hooper still will not allow himself to be unveiled, in fact, Hooper finally reveals that no one should be afraid of him, but of one another because “men avoided me, and women shown no pity, and children screamed and fled” (417) all because of a simple black veil. Through the use of symbols, Hawthorne is able to use this short story to prove that the community people and the Puritan’s religion and their beliefs are hypocritical and over zealous.

It appears that the idea in this story is that humans by nature are sinful and are all guilty of some hidden sin that they try to keep in the dark because having sins is not considered human or moral. It’s not a very positive outlook on humans, but the book does seem to convey that idea, as Reverend Hooper himself is a flawed man guilty of secret sin as revealed in the end, making him no different from the rest of the townsfolk who have their own sins that they hide. However, it also shows that humans are hypocritical by nature because they are so flawed as in the end Hooper proved that he did exactly practice what he
