In the story persepolis by marjane satrapi the theme is culture has the ability to create and can affect conflicts in society. Culture can affect people in different ways because a person's culture is there way of life and one person's way of life could be different to others so that can create conflict between people. In the beginning of the story a revolution took place and that made it so in obligatory to wear the veil. The veil’s symbolisme on the political level captures the repressiveness of the Islamic Republic. But at the time every religious people wanted to the veil but the more modern people did not want to wear so they protested the streets. “Everywhere in the streets there were demonstrations for and against the veil”(satrapi,2000,p.5)
Professor Leila Ahmed, active Islamic feminist, in her article “Reinventing the veil” published in the Financial Times assumes that there is a connection between “advancement” and veiling, which means that unveiled women are advanced and vice versa. In addition, she supports that it led to increasing rate of violence. She questions why women wear veil, that is considered as “symbol of patriarchy and women’s oppression”. However, research changed her position towards wearing veil. Persepolis is a inspirational story written by Marjane Satrapi in the perspective of a young girl’s life during a powerful, historical moment in Iran. The Islamic Revolution was a life-changing moment that impacted her view on the world around her and her innocence shaping her into the woman she is today. Not many people understand what it feels like to feel pain, hurt and abandonment as a child from major and minor things. The author writes this story and decides for it to be a graphic novel to allow the not only young readers, but also for those who do not understand what happens everyday in the world they live in. Satrapi uses all rhetorical stances, ethos, pathos, and logos to show problems, purpose and emotions.
For some women wearing a veil is not something that is forced on them but rather a choice of their own. Martha Nussbaum and Maysan Haydar are both authors that try to explain their reasoning that veiling isn't an oppressive tool used against women. Martha Nussbaum's article “Veiled Threats”, is a political and philosophical take on why banning the burqa is a violation of human rights. On the other hand Maysan Haydar’s article “Don’t Judge a Muslim Girl by Her Covering”, is a more humorous and personal take on why veiling shouldn't be as judged or stereotyped. Though Nussbaum and Haydar have equal goals this essay is being used to understand the main argument, claims and whether or not each article has any weaknesses.
In Marjane Satrapi’s memoir, Persepolis, the characteristics and qualities of revolution are portrayed through rhetorical devices such as visual text, similes, and pathos. Satrapi’s use of rhetorical devices enhances and supports her expression of the revolution in Iran. Persepolis was Marjane Satrapi’s way of allowing people to see how the revolution in Iran affected her family's lifestyle and her upbringing. This memoir also allows the readers to analyze how war changes the way of the people and government in a country.
In the graphic novel, Persepolis, the main character, Marjane, faces many coming of age moments. Each one of these change her in a way that impacts her view on the world around her as her and her family strive for a better life amongst a war that hinders their ability to follow their beliefs. Marjane learns to forgive, experiences pain and suffering, and changes her opinions on God and her own views on religion forever. Marjane’s life has been filled with hard times, but also glorious moments as well.

In the first chapter of “The Complete Persepolis” by Marjane Satrapi, the author starts off with the Islamic Revolution and the changes it brought to her immediate surroundings. This reminds me of colonialism and the changes it brings to the colonized country. Colonialism started with the expedition of the Portuguese and Spanish to discover new wealth. Since then, the drastic after effects of colonialism are still felt today by the affected group. In the 20th century, colonialism plays a part in why some cultural groups are the way they are today. In conclusion, the change the Islamic Revolution did to Marjane’s immediate surroundings is similar to how colonialism affected the colonized countries.

Personal experiences are expressed through themes including revolution, imperialism, nationalism, religion and loss of innocence and affect Marjane personally as she grows up.
Persepolis is a graphic novel about a young girl named Marji growing up in the middle of the Iranian Revolution, and is forced to face political and religious turmoil caused by her country. Many comic panels in the novel have a deeper meaning and can help readers better their understanding about what the revolution was like on a young girl like Marji. The two images on page twenty five, on the lower right and left hand corner, are just an example of how readers can find a deeper meaning through the images. The first picture on the bottom left is of Marji in the bathtub and a text insertion at the top explains how she stayed in the bath for a very long time that night. God is also in the picture sitting on a stool besides the bath and he seems to be confused and asks Marji what she is doing. In the second picture on the right, Marji is standing naked with her pruned hands facing out so the reader can see.

Through her portrayal of darkness and lightness, Satrapi demonstrates that literary content influences, and is primary to, the form.
