Artemis: Goddess of Light and Protector of the Vulnerable
Artemis is the Greek Goddess of the hunt, wild animals, the wilderness, female fertility, and the moon. Out of all the Olympian goddesses Artemis is the only one to actually have a real mother. She is the daughter of Zeus, the ruler of all the Greek Gods, and Leto a Titaness. Zeus was involved in an affair with Leto and secretly impregnated her. Leto was forced to give birth to the babies while being chased around by a python sent by Zeus’ wife Hera. Fortunately for Leto her first child Artemis was born without any pain but unfortunately for her she had twins so her labor continued. As weak as baby Artemis was she quickly took over the role as midwife and assisted her mother in the birth of her brother Apollo. (The God and Goddess | The Story of Artemis.)
Artemis was sometimes a friendly goddess but she could also be cold if you offended her in any way. “She considered men as less than animals.” Ironically Artemis was born a huntress but she was also very in touch with nature. She was the protector of the forests and the animals. As friendly as she was, if anyone was to hunt or try to show her up in her territory she would definitely punish them in some way. She would paralyze them, or change them into some odd animal. “Artemis once sent a boar after a man who said that he was a better hunter than her. He never said anything like that again.” ("What is the personality of the Greek goddess Artemis?")
For Artemis’s third birthday, she had asked her father Zeus for six wishes. Her wishes were; to be able to live her life forever as a virgin, To never have to marry, for a bow and arrow just like her brother Apollo’s, Hunting dogs to assist her in hunting, all the mountains ...

...an lift. Artemis had the ability to shoot her bow and arrow with precise and perfect aim. She was very clever. She had the ability to turn people into any animal she wanted. She could also kill mortals instantly. She could protect any women during childbirth by just looking at them. Artemis could make herself look any age she wanted to which was often used as a disguise and helped her hear if anybody was saying things they might regret. Just like her twin brother Apollo she had the ability heal the injuries of any living person, but because she hated all men except for Apollo this power didn’t get used that often. She also had the power to cast spells and bring plagues whenever she wanted. Some gods and goddesses are not allowed to cross the dimensions and enter Mount Olympus but Artemis is one of the ones that is allowed. ("Artemis (Olympian goddess)"
Athena is the goddess of several different categories including wisdom, war, and crafts. She is one of the most well-known Olympian goddesses. Athena had a strange birth, followed by an odd life. Athena combines several personalities of different gods into one goddess with her traits of wisdom, power, and craftiness.
“Leto was not only the mother of the Gods Apollo and Artemis she was also the Goddess of Motherhood and a Protector of the young. After Apollo and Artemis’ birth Leto was travelling to the city of Delphoi, during her journey a titan named Tityos attempted to abduct her but was surprisi...
All the gods and goddesses within the ancient greek religion were heavily worshipped by the Spartans, in particular Artemis Orthia, Poseidon and Apollo. The gods convey the society’s values and ethics. Artemis Orthia, was the combination of two deities, who
Homer's great epic, "The Odyssey" was written several thousands of years ago, a time in human history when men played the dominant role in society. The entire structure of civilization was organized and controlled by men; It was an accepted fact that women held an inferior position in society. Society was constructed as if women were around only to serve the men. The involvement of women in any circumstance was almost completely dominated by what the men allowed. The women were valued in society, only they were not given important roles or any decision making power. It is as if they held no power in the ancient Greek society. This is why Homer's Odyssey is very unique, Homer put women into roles that were previously unheard of for women to possess. Unlike in The Iliad, where women served merely as an object to men; female characters of Odyssey are distinctive because they possess personality, and have intricate relationships with the male characters of the Odyssey. By characterizing the women in "The Odyssey", a reader may come to some conclusions about the role of women in this epic. Along with the belief that women played a secondary role to men in society, the female characters displayed certain traits that could not be exhibited by the men. Athena demonstrated the most intelligence and valor out of all the characters in "The Odyssey." The male characters play the most significant roles in this epic, but without the support of the females in "The Odyssey", Odysseus would not have made it through his journey.
Before we delve into the traits of individual characters, it is important to understand certain assumptions about women that prevailed in the Homeric Age. By modern standards, the Ancient Greeks would be considered a rabidly misogynistic culture. Indeed, the notoriously sour Boetian playwright Hesiod-- who wrote about fifty years before Homer-- proclaimed "Zeus who thunders on high made women to be an evil to mortal men, with a nature to do evil (Theogony 600)." While this view may have been extreme even for the Greeks, they were convinced of the physical and intellectual inferiority of women. Thus, they believed that it was better for all--...
Finally, there are the goddesses. They represent women in all their glory. They are very human-like in that they feel the same emotions like jealousy, anger, pride, revenge, excitement, joy, compassion, etc. The exception being that they have supernatural powers. Homer even makes then human-like to the extent that they fall in love with mortals, for instance Calypso.
Athena was the Greek Goddess of many ideas, but she was famous mostly for her superior wisdom, her cunning skills in times of war, and her implausible talent for household tasks, such as weaving and pottery. She was celebrated more than any other God in ancient mythology, was the supposed inventor of countless innovations, and her figure gave reason for Greek woman to gain rights long before others of their time. The goddess of war, the guardian of Athens, and the defender of Heroes; Athena’s impact on the lives of Ancient Greeks is outstanding.
Women play an influential role in The Odyssey. Women appear throughout the story, as goddesses, wives, princesses, or servants. The nymph Calypso enslaves Odysseus for many years. Odysseus desires to reach home and his wife Penelope. It is the goddess Athena who sets the action of The Odyssey rolling; she also guides and orchestrates everything to Odysseus’ good. Women in The Odyssey are divided into two classes: seductresses and helpmeets. By doing so, Homer demonstrates that women have the power to either hinder of help men. Only one woman is able to successfully combine elements of both classes: Penelope. She serves as a role model of virtue and craftiness. All the other women are compared to and contrasted with Penelope.
In the Iliad we saw women as items of exchange and as markers of status for the men who possessed them (Chryseis and
The society in which classical myths took place, the Greco-Roman society was a very patriarchal one. By taking a careful gander at female characters in Greco-Roman mythology one can see that the roles women played differ greatly from the roles they play today. The light that is cast upon females in classical myths shows us the views that society had about women at the time. In classical mythology women almost always play a certain type of character, that is to say the usual type of role that was always traditionally played by women in the past, the role of the domestic housewife who is in need of a man’s protection, women in myth also tended to have some unpleasant character traits such as vanity, a tendency to be deceitful, and a volatile personality. If one compares the type of roles that ladies played in the myths with the ones they play in today’s society the differences become glaringly obvious whilst the similarities seem to dwindle down. Clearly, and certainly fortunately, society’s views on women today have greatly changed.
The story of Athena’s birth is a very interesting one, as her birth like most from older pathos is not a normal birth story like todays births. Most of Athena’s birth stories state that she had no mother and only a father, Zeus. The story starts with two people, a God and a titan; we know them as Zeus and Metis.
In considering the relationship between the meanings of myths and their representation of women, we learned that the major role in shaping the narratives was played by men. Myths reveal to us the experiences of women living in the patriarchal society and we gain the symbol value accorded to women and we come to realize what the term "Woman" meant to the ancient Greek man. Reading through the various stories on Goddesses and queens, monsters and more. Princesses, we learn that there are three major levels of women in Greek mythology. The first level is composed of the divine beings known as the goddesses.
The Greek gods and goddess have sparked my interest ever since seventh grade when I read The Percy Jackson Series. All throughout the books my attention was grasped by their power and demanding personalities, one specific goddess that stood out to me was Athena. Her charm and dominant personality fascinated me and definitely caught my attention. Before reading The Percy Jackson Series, I knew very little about Athena or the gods and goddess’ in general. Later, I took it upon myself to find out more about who the gods were and why they are important to the series I was reading at the time. My knowledge came in handy during the research I did to complete my paper. During my research I found that Athena was very important in not only The Odyssey, but in Greek mythology. She was one of the most confident and practical goddess’, and she was very well respected by the Greek people because of how she helped them.
Athena, back in time when Greece was making its mark in history as one of the great civilization of the Ancient World, there was a great deal of emphasis on the Gods and Goddesses. To the Greeks the world was governed by the Gods and they were the reason many things happened in the world, mostly things that where unexplainable. The goddess Athena was one of the many gods or goddesses that played a large role in Greek mythology. Even though Athena was the patron saint of Athens she supported other Greeks outside of Athens, such as, Achilles, Orestes, and especially Odysseus. Athena is know to be the goddess of war, guardian of cities, patroness of arts and crafts, and promoter of wisdom (Classical).
Her symbols are the bow and arrow, hunting dog, the moon, and the Ceryneian Hind. The Ceryneian Hind is a female dear she has antlers and golden hooves. The Ceryneian Hind can run faster than an arrow. Artemis also leads a group called Hunters of Artemis. The hunters and Artemis deeply dislike men and wish to stay unmarried.
