Introduction Having read other books by Michael Fullan, I was interested to see what new insights his book The Six Secrets of Change might hold. While reading, I was trying to apply the six secrets as actions that the best leaders do to help their organizations survive and thrive. Grasping the idea that these six secrets contain mechanisms that act as checks and balances that deters bad habits from growing, I tried to narrow them down to the two that had the largest impact or importance for me. Knowing that behaviors change before beliefs and feelings are more influential than thoughts (Kotter, 2008), I choose the biggest key learning’s that would help me as an administrator shape staff behaviors. The first key learning is that of loving …show more content…
This “love” is not a feeling of deep passion or romance, but rather creating a relationship that puts an importance on everyone to reach his or her full potential and learn continuously. This relationship has many aspects such as shared goals, shared knowledge, and mutual respect. Creating this relationship is easier said then done which is why it is important to understand personal motivation. Douglas McGregor had two contrasting models of workforce motivation that put people on a continuum, Theory X and Theory Y (McGregor, 1960). By creating this relationship will all learning community members; those who are more Theory X will tend to become more like Theory Y. Moving those who fall inline with Theory X over to Theory Y will create the right kinds of relationships and values that those in the education field must …show more content…
Collaboration is a systematic process, in which we work together, interdependently, to analyze and impact professional practice in order to improve our individual and collective results (Dufour, Dufour, & Eaker, 2002). When teachers within a school collaborate, they begin to not just think about it as my classroom but also about our school. Likewise, the mentality shifts to how do we all get better while I also improve as much as I can. Collaboration results in knowledge flowing as people continuously learn what works best. The identity with an entity larger than oneself expands the self into powerful consequences (Fullan,
By working together there is information sharing, improve safety and quality also collaboration gives knowledge to other professionals. (Littlechild and Smith, 2013).what I have learned through working in partnership with other professionals was creating a poster related to what each professional does. Some of the professionals I did not know how exactly they work together in partnership. Example: I was not aware of how a radiology would work with a social work and the outcome of that was that Radiology develop and maintain collaborative relationship with medical colleagues and participates in regular meetings with other professionals activities to meet the needs of a service users therefore they collaborate with Social Workers. By doing a poster and delivering information I learned a lot from the other team members, shared experiences knowledge and skills with other group members. Group work made me realise how it is very important to work in multi-displinary team, the benefit of it and what others can benefit from. During the poster each of the student was from different professional however we all had the question but each had to look at it in each profession perspectives. This gave an opportunity to everyone to go and search for each professional and communicate with the rest of the group the outcome of the presentation. By doing that, we exchanged ideas learned from each other’s skills and used it into practice. I have learned about sharing information with others, learned about communication and
The stages of change according to the Transtheoretical Model of Change consist of precontemplation, contemplation, preparation, action, maintenance, and termination. The Transtheoretical model of change includes flexible stages. This means that an individual could be in the maintenance stage one week, relapse the next week and be back in the precontemplation stage. The stages of change are not stagnant and an individual could go up/down a stage or stages of change depending on their development of self-efficacy. Ted goes through all of these stages of change on his journey to sobriety.
When you are born people are there to take care of you, love you, and guide you through life. As you grow up and life changes, you must take charge of your own life and not become so dependent on others. Throughout the course of life a person will encounter many changes, whether good or bad. In 'A&P';, 'The Secret Lion';, and 'A Rose for Emily';, the main characters in the stories are Sammy, the boys, and Miss Emily who face changes during their lives. All of these characters are in need of change. Because of their need for change, their lives will become much better. They are filled with wonder and awe about the world around them. No matter what type of person, everyone will encounter changes. It is part of the natural process. A person is encouraged to make these changes for the good. Sammy, the boys, and Miss Emily all encounter changes in their lives that fulfill their need to become something different.
As a person one might find that we follow a specific routine on the day to day basis. Sudden changes to these routines feels weird and out of place. In William Faulkner’s “A Rose For Emily” based in a fictional town called Jefferson taking place during the twentieth century. The time period is indeed an important factor because southern tradition was above all of the highest importance. This short story gives the audience details of life during that time in which they followed the values of southern tradition and the importance to never stray away from those traditions. The context of the story is laced with subliminal messages of humanities resistance to change.
The first factor that can affect collaboration is time. Teachers are very busy throughout the day and may find it hard to make time to collaborate with their peers. Some schools have worked to build in this collaboration time during the day or during the weeks of school. However, some teachers must find this time on their own. It can be difficult for a teacher to stay after school or meet on the weekends but this may have to be done in order to make that time for collaboration.
Change is the only constant in life. And therefore it should be understood as part of a continuing work in progress that calls for a much broader canvas that seeks out competing voices, and works with the resulting ambiguities, contradictions and tensions of messy reality (Graetz, F. & Smith, A., 2010). In this submission I try to show that organizational change is majorly based on the environment surrounding it much more than the desire of the members or change agents working in that organization. This view diverts from that of Lippitt, (1958) who suggests that implementing planned organizational changes successfully depends on premeditated interventions intended to modify the functioning of an organization. It also diverts from the traditional approaches to organizational change that generally follow a linear, rational model in which the focus is on controllability under the stewardship of a strong leader or ‘guiding coalition (Collis, 1998). In this discussion therefore, comparison made between the different philosophies of change and I try to show that successful change implantation largely depends on an organizations appreciation of what goes on around it rather than what they have planned as a strategic direction.
“Leading Change: Why Transformation Efforts Fail” is an article written by John P. Kotter in the Harvard Business Review, which outlines eight critical factors to help leaders successfully transform a business. Since leading requires the ability to influence other people to reach a goal, the leadership needs to take steps to cope with a new, more challenging global market environment. Kotter emphasizes the mistakes corporations make when implementing change and why those efforts create failure; therefore, it is essential that leaders learn to apply change effectively in order for it to be beneficial in the long-term (Kotter).

Introduction John Kotter and Dan Cohen’s book, The Heart of Change, is a book about how people are able to influence and change the behavior within their organization. They do this with the purpose of bettering and improving the organizational and operational environment to foster success. The use of real life stories takes the book from theory to practical application and demonstrates how with the right motivation anything is possible. Kotter and Cohen tell us that the behavior in any organization can be changed by following eight steps. The steps that must be followed: 1-Increased Urgency, 2-Build Guiding Team, 3-Get Vision
I believe that collaboration is extremely beneficial for the educational growth of our students. On Wednesday, January 24th I had the opportunity to attend a coaching workshop on Flipped Lessons. I was amazed with the the collaboration that went on in the room. We learned skills that we will be able to utilize with our students. This evidence supports element 6-4. I have also learned a lot about collaboration from my site mentor, my team members, and the grade level teachers at my site . A perfect example is the suggestion my site mentor did when I was teaching the number line. She suggested I use a whiteboard so that the students were able to interact when learning the new technique. I tried it and definitely made an improvement. My group
Sharing ideas through collaboration can spark up ideas for other teachers. Another example of a traditional method of professional development is the formation of learning communities. Learning communities are groups of teachers who meet to work on their teaching skills or new techniques. Learning communities also provide a support system to the teachers that are involved. Researchers believe teachers are more effective when they collaborate because the teacher has moral support, situated certainty, and a better opportunity to learn (Coronel, Carrasco, Fernandez, & Gonzalez, 2003, p. 130). Teachers become more confident when they are formulating ideas with people who work in the same field as they do. Working with peers allows for constructive criticism and the sharing of personal experiences which help teachers to explore and learn to be more effective. Furthermore, another type of traditional professional development is taking college classes at the doctoral level. Traditional classes are preferred by most students because they find face to face discussions to be the most beneficial (Mather, M.A., 2000, p.
Collaborative learning is a situation where two or more people attempt to learn something together. Dillenbourg, P. (1999). Lev Semenovich Vygotsky, (born in 1986), introduced his theory that, human development—child development as well as the development of all human kind—is the result of interactions between people and their social environments. What this states is that the development of a “higher education” is the product of comparing and contrasting ideas of others ultimately to conclude a solution to a problem as a whole or group. Everyone’s input in a collaborative situation will play a role in final solution.
Collaboration is an important aspect of teaching, as a teacher, you will be collaborating with others. When it comes to collaboration the goal is for students succeed. In the textbook, it states that teachers must voluntarily want to collaborate with others. If someone was assigned to work with me because I was the “expert” I would treat them as an equal, you could also learn something from the teacher you are working with. If both teachers are not treated as equals the collaboration will not be as successful.

...I believe through the use of critical thinking, communication with students and parents and showing the creative side of learning the collaboration within colleague would be enhanced. I know from my prior experience within the classroom as a substitute that without some collaboration the students are at a disadvantage. One memory stands out the most when collaboration is mention is when I was subbing for a ECE Teacher in a regular learning classroom, while the teacher was giving the rest of the students their assignments I was working one on one with a ECE student that needed the extra help in order to fulfill their task. The teacher and I collaborated on the questions that the student had left to complete before moving on to their homework. Through the use of collaboration the student was able to complete their task and be on the same task as the rest of the class.
