In life, success does not come on a silver platter. People like Bill Gates, Oprah Winfrey and Donald Trump suffered to get to where they are. Perseverance and determination are the key to success. In order to achieve one’s goal in life, one must work hard before becoming successful. Jacqueline Novogratz, the author of The Blue Sweater, in chapter 5 mentions a lot of processes that led to the Blue Bakery’s in Rwanda flourishing. Good management and hard work were the factors that led to the Blue Bakery’s success.
The Blue Bakery’s accomplishment was due to good management. Two things that can be said to be part of good management are surveying the place and training the employees of a business. When one
wants to start to have a good business, one must know the type of business he or she creating in order to have good result. For example, Jacqueline and her team surveyed the place in Kigali, Rwanda. Novogratz and her team went to the poorest places in Rwanda and saw that 90 percent of the women were not working. The blue bakery became successful because they knew that by organizing the business at the poorest place in Rwanda, and this made them generate more income and more ventures from the business.Novogratz and her management team made sure of the things that were going on in and around the Blue Bakery. In addition, the equipment which was used by the women was inspected and made sure it was kept in good shape .They gave the women lessons on how to introduce their product to any consumer. “We returned to our class on customer relations and building a market where everyone knew our goods and wanted to buy from us.” (81-82) Thus, good management was the responsible for the Blue Bakery’s flourishing. The Second factor which led Blue Bakery’s achievement was hard work. Hard work is always the baseline of great fulfillments. The women of Rwanda were really into the business because they knew that was the only way could provide food for their families and get income from it. Novogratz knew that by organizing the Blue Bakery project, it would improve the lives of the women of Rwanda. The women were there at dawn came to work and began frying the beignets, batonnets, samosas, tiny waffles and prepared hot tea with milk, and sugar. The women began carrying it into their head pans and basket and to sending it to other businesses, government institutions and sell it (75). The women were aware that the people who worked for the government and other institutions sometimes forgot to take on their breakfast, so this was the way the women of Rwanda can generate income from selling the product to them. Therefore, the Blue Bakery’s victory was as a result of hard work. The Blue Bakery’s success was due to two main reasons. Novogratz and her team created this business to make the women to be self-reliant because they were solely depending on foreign aids for support. If the African government would use their resources well, and create meaningful businesses for its people to work in them, there were would be no more poverty to deal with.
Case study number two is a four-page article written by Marian L. Houser and Astrid Sheil, and it’s titled “How Do You Get Anything Done Around Here?” The article focuses on the concept of real organizational experiences, but primarily Kate Elliot’s experience and dissatisfaction with her job at Donaldson Family Foods, Inc. In this case, Kate’s cooking bag project faces the dueling black hole. Throughout my paper, I will relate and apply Kate’s experience to organizational culture and socialization, how the conflict is handled, both verbal and nonverbal communication, and possible suggestions for Kate.

Although Gladwell never truly establishes credibility in his book Outliers, he still backs up his proposed theories with reputable studies and sources which intrigue the audience to keep reading.The purpose of Outliers was to enlighten people about the different elements of success while also informing them of real life situations where seemingly less than likely people beat the odds and became the powerful figures that they are today. The intended audience is anyone who is looking to become successful or who is perhaps interested in the idea of success itself and wishes to learn more about it. Understandably, a secondary audience could be high school students who are about to venture out into the world on their own because with this book they will hopefully start paying attention to different factors of their lives and seizing opportunities that they may have otherwise passed up. He also speaks of how chance opportunity comes into play and that the distant background of a person still reflects how they handle situations in their present day life. Gladwell’s Outliers successfully informs the reader about the different components that add up to success with probable theories and credible studies to make for an interesting and motivational read.

Subsequently, success can also be defined as the attainment of wealth, position or honors. Dr. Sutton highlights what it takes to be a good boss. People that work for a good boss are 20 percent less likely to have a heart attack (Sutton, 2010). Dr. Sutton wrote that teams with stronger leaders cost the company less money and achieved their work better (Sutton, 2010). Engagement and performance of employees were based upon their direct boss and not if the company was good or bad (Sutton, 2010). Most bad bosses have employees who have check-out: actively disengaged, and undermine their co-workers accomplishments. Managers have to find the balance between performance and humanity to be successful. A candid and straight person, Boyle has often admitted that, having never worked a day in her life, she had no idea what to do when she first began running the company. (2) Despite her lack of experience, Boyle helped turn Columbia from a company near bankruptcy and collapse into a billion dollar publicly traded organization. Along the way she relied on her natural business savvy and perseverance, overcoming trials such as family tragedy and even an attempted kidnapping.
Effectively, success does not just happen. It is made to happen, especially through chasing personal dreams and aspirations. It is also made to happen when we consciously pursue our purposes in life, particularly guided by our own inborn abilities. We should never be discouraged by our heritage or cultural backgrounds. We should not even be worried about lack of opportunities. Pursuing our passion will certainly lead us into exploiting our full potential, as we contribute to the improvement of the welfare of humanity. Alongside, we will get what we rightly deserve – invaluable rewards.
The main issue for Mike Brady is upholding his B-corp status while trying to branch out to new customers and suppliers. They are upholding so many standards and doing so much for their community that there is tiny room for them to expand as a company. This exceptionally significant for them, because the reason the business was done, was to help the community of Yonkers. As their motto states, “we do not hire people to bake brownies; we bake brownies to hire people.” Greyston’s founder also encouraged the importance of sharing parallel values for fair trade with its clients and suppliers.To define the problem in this case as trying to develop as a company while upholding B-corp standards. With only one product and one primary source of income, Greyston Bakery needs to develop to increase its profits and decrease its debt overhang.
